A thread connected to the doll goes up his sleeve, so that when he stretches his arm, he tightens the thread. That's my guess.

Thunder could still be right...he could have put the legs of the doll into a loop of thread on his hand. Or, a simpler explanation, he could have had a thread from his left hand to the doll.

Usually it’s attached with a small piece of wax, this way you can easily remove it and let someone inspect it. I sit next to a guy at work who does this all day long……
