Iran leader asks Merkel for help on Zionism - German official

BERLIN, July 20 (*******) - A letter written by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to German Chancellor Angela Merkel asks her to help solve the Palestinian problem and deal with Zionism, a German government official said on Thursday.

"There's nothing about the nuclear issue (in the letter)," the official told ******* on condition of anonymity due to the extreme sensitivity of the issue for the German government.

"It's all related to Germany and how we have to find a solution to the Palestinian problems and Zionism and so on. It's rather weird," the official, who has seen the letter, said.

Iranian students news agency said on Wednesday that Ahmadinejad had written to Merkel, but until Thursday officials had not spoken about the contents.

Zionism is a political movement that supports a homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine, now the state of Israel. The fate of Palestinian Arab refugees is one of the world's largest and most long-lasting refugee problems.

Berlin's relations with Ahmadinejad have been complicated by his denial of the Holocaust, in which Germany's Nazi regime killed six million Jews, and his call for Israel to be wiped off the map.

Holocaust denial is a crime in Germany punishable with up to five years in prison.

"It's extremely touchy (for the German government)," said the official, adding that the government did not yet know if or how it would respond. "There are a lot of propaganda phrases about Israel and the Jews inside."

In May Ahmadinejad wrote U.S. President George W. Bush an 18-page letter discussing religious values, history and international relations.

In it, he took swipes at Israel and at the United States.

He sharply criticized Bush on many fronts, implying that the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, abuses of detainees in U.S. prisons in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib -- and his staunch support for Israel -- were somehow inconsistent with Bush's Christian beliefs.

But the letter to Merkel was different and was not confrontational in tone, the official said.

"It's not negative like Ahmadinejad's letter to Bush. He is not criticising Germany," he said. "It's basically about how we have to work together and solve the problems of the world together."

In February, Merkel compared Ahmadinejad's statements and stance to Adolf Hitler's rise to power when he and his Nazi party began threatening to exterminate European Jewry.

"Remember that in 1933 many people said it was just rhetoric," Merkel said.

The German official said it was interesting that the letter did not discuss Iran's nuclear standoff with the United States, European Union and other countries.

Iran is facing possible action at the U.N. Security Council over suspicions that it is developing nuclear arms. Tehran denies the charge, saying it is working on nuclear fuel only to run power stations.

I find this quite funny, He seems to be in some time-warp. I reckon he's taking the p*ss out of Germany personaly.

I'd be extremely offended if I was German - He's basically saying that Germany has done it once, why shouldn't they do it again.

Although, without reading the actual letter word-for-word, we can only speculate.

Exactly. Maybe he was just suggesting that Germany should help in negotiations or something.
But even that is completely nuts, as can be seen from most reactions in this thread so far. There is no way Germany could get involved there in a constructive way.
And Ahmadinejad should know that. I wonder what he really intended with this letter...

The jewish people really screwed things up by creating the zionist movement. Now all a neo-nazi has to do is to scream zionist instead of jew, and foilhatters on the left and right will rush to support him.

IIRC Ahmy has pandered to this before - something about the 'proud German people' being 'abused by the zionist entity', I think he was referring to the wiedergutmachung.

were somehow inconsistent with Bush's Christian beliefs.

Yep, Ahmadinejad is definately a devout Muslim, I don't think any of his religious statements has offended Muslims yet. This includes the insults to Judaism.

It's conserning that Germany hasn't binned the letter yet. You really don't have to be a genious to understand what this Holocaust denier is implying: Kill all jews, conflict solved.

Bin the letter.

Bin it.

He's not all that crazy. It is reasonable to ask for advice from experts in any given field of human endeavour.

Could be true. He might even be more rational than you, Avary. But then, this may not mean very much.

So Ms Merkel is an expert in what. I think Iran is insulting Germany by doing this. Or may be he wants to use that on sunnis.

I cant agree more, its a very sick thing of this guy to ask the German PM.

Maybe he's playing the Aryan heritage card. Maybe he thinks Germany and Persoa can ally up, conquor the world together and then Iran will jump on Germany and take the whole thing.

Always wondered what would have happened if the Axis has managed to win; the Germany to India through Middle East scenario, USSR out of war an all. What do Germanay and Japan do with each other in 1944 or 1945?

IMO, he might not be referring to the Nazi's treatment of the Jews, but instead referring to the resulting affect of Nazi treatment of the Jews, leading up to the creation of Israel in the post-war period.

The creation of Israel is kind of "your fault" (i.e. the fault of Germans & the Nazi state's maltreatment of Jewish citizens), so it's also "your responsibility" to fix the present "Israel problem" as well... in the Ahmadinejad bizzaro universe.

Of course, if Ahmadinejad is actually referring to the Holocaust, it would be all too sick altogether... I have no great love for the man, but I don't even want to consider that he's thinking about instituting another Holocaust with the help of Germany. It would be truly sick beyond any sickness.

Well, one nuke would be enough to take out six million jews since they're all collected so nicely tight together on that strip of land.

AHA! I found them out. Zionism is a nazi conspiracy constructed in order to collect all the jews in one huge concentration camp in order to simplify extermination. Ahmadinejad is radiocontrolled by Nazi descendants on Antarctica.
