French lawyer says he will defend Saddam

Associated Press

PARIS — A French lawyer, known for defending terrorists and a Nazi leader, said Saturday he will defend Saddam Hussein.

Jacques Verges told France-Inter radio he had received a letter from Saddam's family requesting him to defend the former Iraqi leader in court.

The letter read: "In my capacity as nephew of President Saddam Hussein, I commission you officially by this letter to assure the defense of my uncle," Verges said. He did not name the person who sent the letter.

U.S. officials have said they will bring Saddam to trial for alleged crimes against Iraqi people. But the location of any trial and its format and date have not yet been decided.

Saddam is being held by U.S. forces at an undisclosed location.

Verges has defended Venezuelan terrorist Carlos the Jackal, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez. He gained international notoriety during the Cold War for staging a string of deadly bombings, assassinations and hostage seizures.

The French lawyer also defended, Klaus Barbie, a Nazi Gestapo chief in France in World War II, who was convicted of crimes against humanity in Lyon, France.

Jacques Vergès is famous because in the past he has defended those nobody wanted to defend. Carlos, the "Jackal", Klaus Barbie "the butcher of Lyon", Sloboda Milosevic, Baader-Meinhof's suspected members Klaus Croissant and Magdalena Kopp, members of the Algerian FLN during the war...

Jacques Verges is not very popular in France because of his exessive mediatization to defend worse people. Yes, he is a lawyer, we can think that he do his job but why defend this kinds of individus. :(

Yeah, well, fair trial, ever heard of it? Nothing to do with his integrity.
You would just lynched him with an angry blood-thirsty mob?

You forgot to mention Verges is also a communist.

But he what he said is right, he can't be blamed for having received a letter.

And most of the people he defended went to jail anyway (Barbie, Carlos...)

the least we can say about Jacque Vergès is that his past seems very fuzzy
he would have known some hardcore communist periods when he disappeared in 1970, and Pol Pot would be one of his old friend
he is also known to be a militant anti-colonialist

it is kind of challenge for him, to defend always the controversy side and the most indefensible people

but what is worse is that it is undeniable that Vergès has some talented advocate skillz, this man has ever won sometime and he is one of the best devil's advocate

True. The most important thing is his French nationality. As usual on this Forum the decision of one individual makes generalities...

The ironic thing about the lawyer being a Communist is that he would have been executed as a "CLASS ENEMY" by a real communist nation long ago. Perhaps we give him to much credit for being astute.

You see Reds have historically killed intellectuals, teachers, doctors, officers, and the educated class in Communist nations because those people are smart enough to know better.

Thank god he chose to live in France where there are less-than-lethal Communists.
