G'day,
I am looking for any pictures that show Police/Military snipers working from helicopters.
In particular:
1. Weapon mounts
2. Optics
3. Operator mounts (safety harnesses etc.)
Regards,
K.

thanks,
I am looking specifically for purpose-built sniper "emplacements" rather than soldiers taking "shots of opportunity" while on board.
thanks anyway,
K.

Not really, if it's Coastguard, then chances are that the target is the engine of a drug running boat, so the range will be quite close............OSOK

True. I am no expert on sniping, by any means, I just thought it was odd. As CanadianSig mentioned, I just think the whole set up was kinda weird...

I don't know of any "Manufactured" setups. Most setups that I am aware of are fabricated by the users. The snipers in my unit made their own system (Somalia 93).
They used a series of cargo straps and bungie cords to suspend Barret .50s and M24 (Remington 700s) in an open Blackhawk doorway with the shooter and spotter laying on the floor.
Very "low speed" but quite effective.

The USCG sniper's are used for drug interdiction. They use the 50's for taking out outboard engines to stop smumgglers in ther "gofast" boats. They don't usually have to shoot more than 150m from the video i've seen. :)

Commandant of the Coast Guard was on CSPAN last night giving an update to some committie. He stated that Coast Guard marksmen will start deploying on US Navy helicopters as gunners against drug smugglers. Navy has the helo assets, but can not shot, however Coast Guardsmen are considered Law Enforcement so they can.
Should make for some interesting pictures and I'm sure someone in the media will get confused.

Cool pix! I've always wondered how sniping from a heli would be. Is it harder and less accurate or pretty much the same? Someone inform me please. :)

Firing at a moving target from a moving object requires specialist training. It took a lot of training to teach door gunners in bombers to hit targets... and they were using machineguns with tracer rounds. (operationally of course it was better if they didn't use tracer rounds). From a helo you also have the serious problem of vibration, which a high power scope will magnify to the point that you can't see very much. A very high power scope would not be much use on most helos. Of course helos have been used for deer shooting for quite some time and performance from those is pretty good. Obviously for the sniper there is the very real problem that the target could be shooting back and most helos are vulnerable to even mere small arms fire from close range.
Take a good look at the guys carrying the sniper rifles in the photos on this thread... it must be quite hard to do what they do.

You need some skill to be a sniper, but to shoot from a helo, you need alot of skill, props to those guys and gals.
Thanks for the info! I appreciate it. ;)

It should be realised that this is not Hostage Rescue type shooting, but more suppressive type shooting. It would be foolish of a Sniper to take a HR shot from a Heli............OSOK
