This is not an important unit, and is old.
The most important unit is GIS of the Carabinieri (Gendarmerie), and NOCS (Police), and the CT unit of Guardia di finanza (treasory).
Theya re SCO of Police and ROS of Carabinieri, higly trained units on gathering informations on organize crime and terrorism, having inside the best experts of the world for money laundry investigation.

For marine counterterorist Unit is Comsubin, the Naval Commandos.
Comsubin is considered the oldest and the best naval secial force of the world. They train (yes they train) Navy Seal, brittish SBS, franch and israeli naval comandoes.
For liberation of italian citizens out of Italy, there is GIS with the IX Col Moschin regiment, this a very trained military unit.
The training and duties of Col Moschin is same of the sas, and they did a very good job in Kosova aiming the objectives for the airplanes, and hunting the war criminals.
The unit you say, was a kind a local swta unit ifor Calabria region, in the past times that this zone had problems of persons sequestration.
In fact, Italy have not regionalor city swat teams, but at the other side, had lot of prepared CT units. however inside italian territory only GIS and NoCS can make CT operations, other special forces can be employed if neccessary.
These police special forces, have given a strong contribute in the war against mafia, arresting the greates bosses.

il fatto che non sia importante come gis e nocs non vuol dire affatto che non sia importante , penso che sia molto di meno che gis e nocs ma anche molto di più che una squadra mobile.
comunque è mia opinione che come reparto non abbia nulla da invidiare alla maggior parte dei swat teams americani
