this question is meant to be thought provoking but please don't take it to seriously.
the only reason i ask it is because i've never seen an issue like this discussed before and therfore i think it's a legitimate question to ask seeing how most of us aren't athiest and do believe in god.
so here goes.
if as a soldier in a war i'm forced to shoot and kill someone will i still go to heaven?
feel free to post your thoughts on this

biblicaly you still got your ticket to go in.....look that the hebrew texts, God orders the Jews to go into battle.....however....if you feel its wrong, but do it anyways then its probly a sin, but that still doesnt close the door due to grace....

That's a damn good question on my opinion. Anyway, the bible does say that killing is wrong and shouldn't be done. However, what if the person you shot was a sadistic terrorist ? Wouldn't you be making a "favor" for god by getting rid of a sick bastard such as him?
But the obvious question would of course be that what if the person you shot and killed was an innocent man/woman ? This is a question that I'm sure that alot of the people that have caused the death (for an example on the battlefield) of an innocent "civilian" ponder as well.
In turn, what if the person you killed was an "average-guy", he had done nothing to harm anyone but got into a war and was killed by you a few days later? I suppose that god does not look kindly upon the mankind for waging wars that kill innocent people and force "average people" to kill each other for whatever reasons.
So we might as well as suppose that god rules that "war is hell, everything is so messed up there anyways. I might as well as let person X that killed person Y go to heaven since person X wasn't a bad guy to begin with. He was just forced into a situation in which he had to kill"
Or then god might think that "Man always has a choice, person X had a choice on not killing person Y. They could've settled it with words therefore person X made a big mistake and must go to hell!"
So much possibilities, so little "real" knowledge...

I'm just humble old me, speaking for me, but I think one would still be good to go. It's saving innocent lives. Have a good one, and just some thoughts...

Don't forget the ultimate "get out of jail free card".
In Catholic school, I was taught that if you commit mortal sins(like murder and shagging your neighbor's wife silly) and you are granted forgiveness by a priest in confession...you still get to go to Heaven.
So......from what I learned....and I pretty much paid attention during the confession lessons(figuring I may need to know that part later in life)....is that you can go frickin' Clockwork Orange.....just make sure you stay alive long enough to confess to a priest.
Although having said that...I did have a Nun in the 6th grade named Sister Mary Richard who told me that no matter what I did, she figured I was gonna burn....damn penguin rofl

Ecclesiastes 3:
For everything there is a season,
And a time for every matter under heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
A time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to throw away stones, And a time to gather stones together;
A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to seek, and a time to lose;
A time to keep, and a time to throw away;
A time to tear, and a time to sew;
A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate,
A time for war, and a time for peace.

OMG! Ecclesiastes ripped off a Birds' Song!! OMG! Oh wait...is it the other way around?....jk
The bible says "Do not Murder". Yes, if you have JESUS in your heart you will go to heaven even if you rape, pillage, and murder an entire town, but that shouldn't give you any reason to do it....

in WW2 Polish priests were on the front lines hearing confessions of soldiers while bullets were buzzing over their heads.

I say you will go to heaven, but hey, I'm just as good as the guy who wrote the bible...

Hey howdy hey!
I have thought myself plum silly over things like this in the past. Then one day, kaboom, God turns on the lightbulb. I didn’t find an answer because I was asking the wrong question. I will sum up many years worth of struggle and searching for truth in the following paragraphs. Feel free to PM me. I love to talk about this stuff...Life as opposed to religion.
No one ever in all of time, past and future, has been or ever will be condemned before God because of the acts of sin they have committed or the acts or righteousness that they failed to do. It is not what we do but who we are that separates us. So it is necessary for a person to be "born again" in order to be justified in the eyes of God. Old testament saints believed in the "seed" that would come. After the cross, people can believe in the seed that came.
When Adam sinned, we (if your human, this means you hehe) were in Adams gene-pool. So when He "died" to God spiritually, we were all subsequently born with a dead soul and spirit. We needed to know that we had a problem since we tend to find ways to "justify" whatever error is in our life, so God gave the Law through Moses. The purpose of the Law was to make people sin more. "No way", you may be thinking. "Why would God give a law to make people sin more when God hates sin"?
God loves us enough to want us to know that we have a problem and that He has the solution. So he gave a law that no one could keep. No one but Him. So, in Jesus, the Law was lived perfectly. When I accepted Jesus, God placed me into Christ, and God now sees me as having lived the law perfectly. I am born again, justified, the very righteousness of God.
So this is why the "Good News" is really GOOD news. I am not trying to work my way into Gods favor by keeping all the rules and trying to "save" 10 people everyday. I am striving to walk in a state of rest, allowing Jesus to live through me, just as He did while He was on earth. In an instant I was made perfect in Gods sight. So now He is at work in me, to make by behavior and habit patterns match the reality of who I am in him!
My apologies for going so long. And please, don’t just take my word on this stuff, seek the truth in the scriptures and seek to see it for yourself.
Jesus blessings!

She was right :). As for others, confession doesn't guarant straight heaven, if you honestly confess your sins and make honest promisse of improvment than make your atonement ordered by priest you have guaranted purgatory, to go straight to heaven you must fulfill additional conditions... If you don't meet all mentioned conditions you go to hell BURN BURN BURN :)
This may sound stupid, but were do us athiest's go ;)

Its not too bad, in a few million years we'll have turned to oil and people can fight wars over us. See, everyone has an impact after they're dead.

Nah 'cause hopefully by the time you're oil, there will be a better and more environmental-friendly energy source in widespread use, and oil will be seen as a dirty substance by the masses, kind of like mud is... Or we would have slaughtered each other enough so that there is peace and no one knows of war and armed forces... Or we just might not exist anymore.

Yeah, my whole "life plan" has been built around what I learned in Catholic school. I've been enjoying a life of debauchery, but I'm gonna recant on my death bed. Man, that'll be sweet! ;)
About the question posed - I seem to remember the Bible saying something about murder, not killing being sinful. As others have pointed out, the Bible is full of God commanding others to kill, helping the Jews kill enemies etc. Heck, Moses killed a whole city full of male kids. Is he partying with Satan? I can't figure that the people who did "God's will" would have the rug pulled out from under them.
At the risk of incurring the wrath of some, that's the problem I see with the ultra-religious. Such as the radical Islamist, for example. They don't see themselves as "evil". They're simply doing God's will by killing, not murdering. They're able to justify anything they want by putting the "God approved" sticker on it. Kinda scary. Anyhow, just my .02 - - any theologians out there?

Stop it! I'm an atheist, I don't believe in the afterlife, so I need all the reassurance I can get. :D ;)
