Failed scans increase in US due to increasing obesity
By Indo Asian News Service
New York, July 28 (IANS) The numbers of failed scans is on the rise in the US because more and more Americans are becoming too fat to fit into the X-Ray machines, say scientists.
http://www.dailyindia.com/images/spacer.gif http://www.dailyindia.com/images/spacer.gifhttp://www.dailyindia.com/images/spacer.gif
Raul Uppot and colleagues at Massachusetts General Hospital who looked back at radiology reports between 1989 and 2003 found that over the past years, the number of failed scans linked to patient obesity has doubled, reported the online edition of BBC News.
The study, which appeared in the Radiology journal, said the nation's rising obesity problems meant that many citizens are not only too large for scanners but they have too much fat for the rays to penetrate.
Ultrasound images were affected the most because the sound waves need to penetrate the skin and fatty tissue before reaching the organs being examined.
The scientists warned that important diagnoses could be missed if people could not be scanned.
'It is a real problem and it is getting worse. People are getting fatter. One may not be able to offer the obese patient the best possible imaging test because of their weight,' said one of the researchers.
The problem is not confined to scanners, as hospitals have had to make their beds stronger for obese patients.
Similarly, airlines are designing aircraft to carry heavier loads because passengers are becoming plumper.
According to official US government figures, 64 percent of the population are overweight.

TORONTO -- Hospitals across North America could be failing to diagnose small tumours in obese patients who either can't fit into an X-ray scanner or have fatty tissue so dense the machine can't penetrate it, a new study suggests.
The study, published in the August issue of the journal Radiology, found a growing number of patients are too large to fit into the scanner. In other cases, the X-rays have been fuzzy or imprecise because dense fat blocked the machine's beams.
"There are things you can miss because the X-ray beams are just not able to penetrate deep enough," said study author Raul Uppot, a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
In some cases, the quality can be so poor doctors could miss small lung, abdominal and liver tumours, Uppot said.
"We really have to address this issue," he said.
"Canadians, Americans . . . should all realize this is another problem they'll have if they're obese. When they walk into the hospital, they may not be getting the most adequate care."
Canadian hospitals are also grappling with the difficulties of diagnosing an increasing number of obese patients.
Stewart McNeil, patient equipment co-ordinator at Hamilton Health Sciences, said older equipment wasn't designed to accommodate larger patients. Older scanners are often 46 inches wide.
"People are getting bigger and bigger," McNeil said. "All hospitals are struggling."
McNeil said the hospital can rent over-sized equipment when it's called for, but patients who are very obese are sometimes sent to nearby veterinary colleges.
"The MRI and X-ray machines there are designed for horses. How would you feel?"
Ian Doris of the Ontario Association of Radiologists said sometimes just lifting an unconscious obese patient on to a scanner can take as many as eight people. Many older scanners also can't support more than 400 pounds, while in other cases, a patient's sheer girth can touch the sides of the scanner, making it difficult to get a clear image.
It's a particular problem with ultrasounds and detecting liver disease, said Doris, who noted the importance of ensuring such patients are treated with dignity.
"These people aren't this way because they sit around eating Tim Hortons all day," said Doris, a radiologist with Hamilton General Hospital. "It is recognized as an illness."
While patients are expected to take responsibility for their health, doctors say hospitals should also be updating their equipment.
They say hospitals have difficulty accommodating obese people outside the X-ray room -- from finding stretchers and beds wide enough to providing plus-sized commodes.
Hospitals are supposed to replace their equipment every 10 years -- a guideline often ignored when the equipment is still functioning properly, said Robin Hesler, chief executive of the Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Technologists.

not that old actually, i heard it on the BBC world service today. one thing that is not mentioned in the article is that is not only is the fat to blame, but also the exposure time currently used with Xrays, albeit with the intention of reducing radiation exposure, the exposure may be too short to make a proper exposure plate. ultrasound is inappropriate to use on fatty tissues because it does not take alot of fat to distort a sound scan, this is why ultrasound is mostly used for pregnancies and bone joints.

Although the Americans are leading the way, sadly obesitas is another part of American culture that spreads just as easily as others; soon none of us will be able to make fun of them anymore because our countries will be equally fat. :( Too bad we can't send them to forced fat camps; fat people ruin my appetite...

Most of the american tourist that come to my region are kind of over weight, they usually drive a bus with a huge american flag painted in the back of the bus, others even have the confederate flag.
No wonder why so many street vendors rush to the bus.rofl

I have no sympathy for fatty's (except those with a medical condition such as a thyroid problem)
I cant stand the ones that bitch about seats in the movie theatre being to small while they scarf down their jumbo sized popcorn with extra butter, or those that put their kids on the same McDonalds 4 times a week diet that they do..I can not believe all the obese kids I see walking around..8 year old boys have man****s already..just sickening.
People have gotten too lazy, I've seen lardasses drive around in a parking lot for 5 minutes to wait for a close spot, so they dont wouldn't have to walk an extra 20 seconds to the door. I dont see what's so hard about staying at a healthy weight..just eat sensibly and for the love of god get off your ass and excercize every now and then...take a walk, ride a bike, take the stairs once and a while,it's not that complicated..
If one chooses to indulge so much that they are wearing elastic waist band pants, or can't see their balls anymore, then they are the only ones to blame, not McDonalds, they either need to lose the weight or stop bitching that we should conform certain things to meet their needs..Fatty's irritate me
End of Rant....

Had a party last night at my bachelor pad house of ill repute, and a friend of a friend turned up and he was without a shadow of a doubt the fattest person I've ever seen that could stand on his own two feet. Thank the good baby Jebus he wasn't stripping off and getting in the pool like the rest of us.
You get those human gastropods that eat themselves to their own little mobility scooter and disabled parking space - if its not a medical condition, you shouldn't get disability benefits for being McDonalds best customer 3 years running.
You get those human gastropods that eat themselves to their own little mobility scooter and disabled parking space...
Their logic is twisted too....
You're fat....so instead of walking more....you choose to simply give up and get fatter.

I once saw a huge fat guy at a chinese buffet place in USA. He needed 2 chairs and was still spilling over the seat! I wondered if he was billed for one or 2.
I'm living in france for the moment and the main difference between the diet is indulgence. I would estimate that there are less varieties of junk food here than in USA. There are some key differences in the USA n French diet. For example, the French almost do not eat peanut butter. There is only 1 type of peanut butter on the shelves of Carrefour (similar to Walmat setup) and the stock barely moves. Here in Paris, people walk a lot. Some attribute to the walking that keeps the Parisans trim, much like San Francisco n New York (I was told). Additionally, the portions of the meals are smaller (around 3/4 that of USA).
They do eat more cheese and fatty stuff like foie gras (goose liver). Some claim that red wine counters these but others dismiss it to be trying to prop up the lagging wine industry.
Someone I know once complained to me about constantly putting on weight and how she cannot afford to change her wardrobe. Yet when I offered to buy her a cup of coffee, she replied "Extra Sugar, please"

There was this international American Football event this weekend around where I live in .se , I think maybe for youths or w/e but I saw so many fat people... parents, coaches etc .. probably the fattest people I have ever seen here.
First I spotted a huge American coming out of a fast food place then at a near-by chinese restaurant 3 super fat Germans (I know because they wore national jersays and spoke 'Hitler English') had wedged themselves in around a small table... they must have been ~1000kg combined...
It was a all-you can eat buffet (~10usd).

Americans don't eat fruits and vegetables anymore. my parents and grandparents lived off of their garden's growing up. If you rely on a corporation to process and prepare your food for you, you are going to get fat, there's no way around it. It's simple if calories in > calories expended then you get fat.
Incorporating more activity like walking around, household cleaning etc into daily life actually does more good than trying to go on exercise binges which people are hardly ever able to stick to.

The obesity problem in the US is a combination of a lot of factors. Without going into too much detail, I'll list a few off:
Excercise:
-Many americans, like myself, excercise regularly both in gyms and through hobbies that incorporate excercising like mountian biking. I'm lucky to live in a very out-doorsy area and have time to excercise. Well, I make time. Many people in urban area fall into the work-a-holic cycle, not willing to make time to get to a gym, and without access to actual outdoor activities. A lot of people in rural areas do not have access to gyms at all.
-In many European countries, the mass transit systems are highly developed and most people live in fairly urban environments where cars are optional or completely unnecessary. There are very few places like that in America. Developed mass transit sytems are generally only found in a few very large cities. We are starting to see more and more bus systems in place in smaller cities, but the primary form of transportation in the US is the car. City planning has a lot to do with this. As I understand it, many cities in Europe are set up that people in any given location are within walking distance from small shops that provide them access to things like food, medicines, clothing, entertainment, etc. In the US, a city of 40,000 people may have 3 or 4 grocery stores, hardly within walking distance. Stores are more centralized. Instead of many small shops, things tend to be put in single large buildings. There is a shift occuring in many cities for city planners to incorporate houising with shopping areas in new developments so that people have ammeneties within walking distance of their apartments. Less driving means more walking and biking, meaning more excercising. This is very localised though and will take many years to come into fruition. This type of planning likely will never happen in many urban areas though.
Diet:
-Many people have no idea what they are putting in their mouths. They barely understand what a calorie means, and couldn't even give you a ballpark figure about how many calories they are putting into their mouth at any given sitting. This is changing through nutritional education and public awareness, but it takes time for the elementary schoolers of today to become healthy adults.
-Everyone knows about the great depression our nation went through in the in the 1930s. Some of you may be unaware of what Americans refer to as "a product of the depression". These are older people that lived through the depression, like my grandparents. For many of them, it was an eat as much as you can whenever you get the chance, because you never know when another meal will come. Not wanting to be wasteful, most of them raised their children to "clean your plate". Meaning, if they put more food than the child actually wanted on the plate, they forced the children to finish what was on their plate. This can teach the child to put things on his/her plate in moderation, but it also enforced a national stigma of needing to eat everything that is on your plate. At home this isn't a problem, but eating out, where portions are generally very large, it can lead to massive over-eating. Once again, it has taken a couple generations to get away from the "clean your plate" mentallity.
-When eating out, there are generally only two options: fast food or sit-in. Most fast food has become increasingly unhealthy. But steps have been taken to clean it up over the last few years. Fast food can also be thhought about like cheap beer at a ball stadium. If a pint of beer was only a $1, you'd have a lot of drunk people at the games because they'd buy a lot of them. But when you charge $6 or $8, people tend to only drink one or two. Fast food is generally very cheap, so people end up buying more. Sit down joint here in the US, no matter what type of food it is, almost always bring out enourmous servings. Chinese and Mexican places are often the worst. If people were willing to just stop eating when they were full, it wouldn't be a problem, but people want the full value of their money and tend to "clean their plate".
-Traditionally, food has been used as a reward for children. If they do something right, they get a small candy. At home, if they do things right, they get to eat more or are given extra deserts. This can create very bad habits later on as the child grows.
Societal pressure:
-Society pressures people to be thin and beautiful. I think in many ways the media potrays people at en unrealistic level of thin. For many, the media inspires people to eat better or excercise more to try to attain that image. For others, it has the opposite effect. When they realise they are a littel fat and don't look like what the media tells them they should look like, they get depressed. To solve their depression, they turn to the only thing that makes them feel better; food. This creates a viscious cycle which I think is one of the major factors of obesity. The worse the person feels about their body, the more they eat, and the fatter they become.
Quality of food:
Fast food is a major business, and like any business they are trying to maximize profits. To do this they use the cheapest components as possible, generally foods that provide the least nutritional value. There are beginning to be more and more alternatives. In my area (which is very liberal and known for being a hippie meca) there are many organic and vegetarian restaurants. There are also entire grocery stores that sell primarily organic foods. This is still a very localized trend, but it is beginning to spread throughout the nation. Many people embrase this lifestyle, while the majority don't even have access to it. Personally, I'm somewhere in between.
Meh, these are a few things I notice anyway. Not saying being obese is right, just trying to help others understand the source of the problem.

meh, everyone burn calories even when they sit still or sleep. If you're too lazy, tired to exercise then just don't put in more calories than your body can get rid of per day. Typically 2000 cal for women and 2500-3000 for men.
Wanna gain weight, add more.
Wanna lose weight, input less or increase burn by exercise.
Basically, it's as simple as that.

Basically you need to know what you're sticking in your cake hole.
No item of food/drink passes my lips without a nutritionally sound reason for it doing so plus I do pressups, bicep curls and situps followed by swimming every morning before I go to work and a gym session every evening after work.
If you don't do that you'll get fat.

You don't need to count callories.
just eat three meals a day:
Breakfast (two sandwiches, one white, other brown bread + some extra cheese)
Lunch (two salami sandwiches)
Diner (one NORMAL plate of varied food + puddin' dessert) Vari your dinner, one day asian, the other mexican, then Italian. Well you get my point. Don't eat the same thing day in day out.
I don't drink Cola, but lemonade, milk, orange juice, tea. I eat about 500grams of candy a week. (isn't that much!)
On a normal day I walk/run 30min in total(the bus doesn't stop so close where I need to be)
And the last ten years I've been practicing martial arts 2hours a week, It's a 15min bike ride, so I go by bike:).
I'm on a steady 60Kg at 175cm ( 130lbs at 5'8" )
I've never counted calories and I have no idea what the products contain what I eat.
BTW, In the Netherlands we don't use the Calorie system anymore but use Joules. :) (1 Joules = 1 Watt/second)

Actually it's better to eat five or six smaller meals, that way your body has a more constant supply of calories throughout the day, keepign your metabolism burning at a steadier pace.

The problem with that approach is that you will have persistently elevated insulin levels - seriously not good!

Here's my typical meal for the day.
Bowl of oatmeal with berries.
Protien shake - 60g whey protein.
4 whole eggs (boiled).
Protein shake again.
A sensible dinner (Steak, fish, veal, lamb, shrimp, pork) + some veg :P
Yogurt beforfe bed.
That's my diet.

i'm not trying to hijack this thread, but why do you say that Paris, supposedly the most beautiful city in the world, sucks?
For starters, Paris is not limited to Effiel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysee, Musee de Louvre, Notre Dame... Take a walk or metro around and you'll see the dumps. Actually you need not go that far. Just look down more often and you'll see the amount of poo, dog and human alike (I sh!t u not!). Almost every 'water' stain on the floor (on a dry day) or wall is pee.
Try to ask for help from a Parisian even if you're a paying customer.
See if anyone gives up their seat to a pregnant lady or old folks at the metro. See if anyone gives a damn to the handicaps. A true example: I was at the metro and 2 old folks (American tourists, recognised the accent) were struggling to open the train doors. A french teenager was sitting next to the door and stared blankly at them, not even flinching. I had to rush from my seat which was across from the train and help them open the door, barely before the train started to depart.
Oh yes, to the security guards, everyone is presumed a criminal even if they don't witness you in the act. Try to exit a supermarket via the entrance, i.e. not at the cashiers EVENTHOUGH you do not carry a bag and have nothing in your hands. Even my kids (4 and 6) tried and were yelled at!
Queue cutting. Enough said.
Of course I do not mean that ALL Parisians are like that but I can safely say the majority are. I've seen enough during my 6 months here. I've lived in USA and Australia for 2.5 and 5 years respectively and in those years I don't even have anywhere close to the bad experiences I've had in the 6 months here.
Viola! The most beautiful city in the world.

Actually it's not as simple as that. Some people are blessed with a efficient body, burning and getting rid of the nasty fat gaining stuff. Take my wife for example. At times she eats way more than me and yet she's petite and slim. During the courtship days, we dined together, had supper almost every other night and I exercised regularly but she doesn't. I put on weight n she doesn't. Life's unfair!

Very true. Every person is different. I have many friends that eat chips and ice cream every day of the week and don't gain weight. I look at ice cream wrong and I add an inch to my midsection. A lot of that is influenced by genetics. Fortunately, if I hit the gym and excercise, I put on muscle fairly easily.

lol. Fair enough. I've never been there, but I was just asking because I'd like to visit sometime. Reminds me of my experience's in NYC. People talk about what a great city it is, to that I say BULLSH!T!!!! A city which is packed with rude, ignorant, nasty peckerhead's certainly isn't the center of my universe. It is the most overrated place on planet earth in my opinion. I'll take a Boston, Seattle, Miami or San Diego over that sh!thole anyday.

Also some people have the insulin resistance (somewhere between diabetes 2 an not) and they need to work three times harder to lose any weight. I know because I have a friend who has been struggling with this for a long time. She gains easily weight but takes a lot of time to loose it, even with proper diet and excercise. Tought situation.
As for Paris, I was there last summer and I have to tell you that I really enjoyed my visit (thought it lasted only a week). People were friendly and helpfull and the weather was excellent. I plan to go there again next year.

Yea man but what I said does apply to individuals, not to couples that have to do every little thing same and equal...
Info:
The USDA figures show the average male 5 feet 10 inches in height and weighing 174 pounds, needs 2,900 calories per day - performing light to moderate activity. The average female, 5 feet 4 inches and weighing 138 pounds, needs 2,200 calories per day
(there's more factors than just height and weight but those are the most important factors)
Take my wife for example.
Pics first. Then we talk.

Same thing here. I put weight on incredibly easily, but I lose it and shape up easily as well. I work out regularly (well I usually do hah..I need to get back on track, traveling has messed my schedule up) and know I need to...I don't eat A LOT but I definitely don't starve myself. Plus, working out makes you feel good. It releases endorphins and makes you feel positive and good about yourself, which in turn makes it easier to work out more. It's common sense but some people just don't get it. Or don't want to.

When I have my s*** together, I hit the gym 5 or 6 days a week and do cardio sessions 3 or 4 times a week. I'm 215lbs and in the single digits for body fat. Those who know me would describe me as, "215 lbs of muscle." I try not to worry about actual weight as long as it's the right kind of weight. I seem to be doing something right so far. :D
