Cry Babies
Jill Greenberg answers the critics who claim she abuses toddlers in the name of art
By Jeffrey Elbies
June/July 2006
ゥ Jill Greenberg
"Tribulations"
When Jill Greenberg conceived the idea of photographing crying children back in 2004, she didn't anticipate the attention the project would bring to her fledgling art career, or the furor it would raise. Greenberg, who lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two children, is already known as one of the country's most success commercial photographers, with work for ad clients like Microsoft, Kraft, and Procter & Gamble and magazines like New York and Time. She has emerged as a potent force in fine art with a series of acutely lit portraits of monkeys and apes, which in turn led to her work with children.
Your images have certainly caused an uproar. What do you say to people who call you a child abuser?I think they're insane. I know the comment you're talking about. I don't know what the guy's personal problems are. I don't think he's got kids. I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, and she cries for no reason, a hundred times a day. It's normal. Maybe getting kids to cry isn't the nicest thing to do, but I'm not causing anyone permanent psychological damage.
How many kids did you shoot altogether?
Around 35. Some were the children of friends, plus my own daughter; others came from the Ford or Jet Set model agencies. Kid models aren't very expensive溶ot as expensive as monkeys, for example.
How did you get the kids to cry?
Mostly we did it by giving them something, a lollypop, and then taking it away. Some would just cry for no reason洋y daughter did that; she didn't like standing on the apple box I used for a platform because it was a little wobbly. Some just wouldn't cry at all. For all the kids I worked really fast. We would book 12 or so for one day, and see who we could make cry. At the end of the day I was not in a good mood. I don't like making little kids cry.
The lighting is very dramatic. How did you accomplish that?
It's the same lighting I used for my portraits of monkeys, and I've been using it for some recent magazine cover portraits. It's really flattering frontal light, so the subject doesn't have to have any actual shine on his or her skin to appear shiny. None of the kids had any makeup on. And also I work on that shiny quality in postproduction.
How did you come up with the idea for the project?
I saw this little girl who'd come to a party with her mom, and she was beautiful, so I thought it might be interesting to photograph her. When they came to my studio, the mother brought along her toddler son, and I decided to shoot him too. We took off his shirt because it was dirty. He started crying on his own, and I shot that, and when I got the contact sheets back I thought, "This could go with a caption, 'Four More Years,'" like he was appalled at George Bush's reelection. The images have a real power葉hey immediately get under your skin. The emotion you see is just so compelling, yet they're beautiful at the same time. That was one of the things that interested me about the project葉he strength and beauty of the images as images. I also thought they made a kind of political statement about the current state of of anxiety a lot of people are in about the future of the country. Sometimes I just feel like crying about the way things are going.

Anyone who stands between an individual and his/her god-given right (both lower cases intentional) to exploit others is a liberal. Therefore liberals are evil: we wanted to stop Bush exploiting Iraqi resources, we wanted to stop Israel exploiting Palestinian land and now we want to stop this silly tart from making babies cry. The shame.

about liberalism when the photographers pictures are all images of rightwingers complaining about 'media bias'?

I can come up with something far worse than child abuser, how about unoriginal or corny. My guess is she wants some of the $$$ from all the ever-so-popular crying gypsy kid paintings you seen when you visit you good for nothing uncle.
I hope her next photo project will be poker playing dogs, you know something really classy.

The "End Times" will come on its own. The US President, Republican Party and even Christians cannot hasten that. Though if you wish to believe that, then knock yourself out!
The core basis of Liberalism is self. It is always about self.

The core basis of Liberalism is self. It is always about self.
Republican leaders are willing to allow the first minimum wage increase in a decade but only if it's coupled with a cut in future inheritance taxes on multimillion-dollar estates, congressional aides said Friday.

And me who thought that the founding father were "liberals"
The Republic is a liberal idea.
The Republic has been polluted by Socialism in France.
In the US it had been polluted by religion.
I prefer Socialism personally.

im not a huge art fan, i appreciate certain forms of artistic expression, this baby thing not witholding, the artistic value of baby crying pictures ranks up there with, oh, lets say, slitting your wrists and and then rubbing the blood around on a canvas with a stick, no, thats not art, thats psychotic. there are plenty of people out there making money off of happy baby pictures, hell, they make calendars about it.

So you assumed, I meant that only the Democractic Party is liberal? You have read to much into the post. Are the Republicans above repoach? No, nor am I implying any such. (what are you getting at with the wage increase blurb?)
It comes down to world-view, this will determine what outlook a person has on life. Whether they are "liberal" or "conservative" in thought and action.
Do you believe that there is a creator? Do you believe this creator has rules that govern our life? Or does one believe there is no creator, everything just evolved? This will determine ones approach to life's problems and what action are necessary in solving them.

Baby calendars are not art is kitsch, sold for fat uneducated working class at the dollar store, as well as cat or wolf t-shirts.
Making money and making art are almost opposites.

That's it. That's all it is. Who the ブck cares.

Corporal punishment in schools simply doesn't work. At the RC school I went to back in the 70s they used to hit us with all kinds of stuff to no avail :)
It did give me a lifelong interest in S & M though ;-)

Show me the abuse. I mean, the REAL abuse. Show me were these kids have been mistreated and scarred for life.
I mean, go ahead. I'm finding this more and more amusing.
What's next? Bitching about women breast feeding and claiming that its both disgusting and ******ly abusive?
OMG...what if, you photographed children playing. Or at an emergency room after they were involved in an accident.

Give it up.
You like that anti-Maplethorpe crowd back in the 80s/early 90s. If you had kept your mouth shut, maybe 20 thousand people across the country would have seen it, most of them art students.
But nooooo....you just have to go on yapping like it matters, like there was a wrong doing. As a result MILLIONS see it, most of him shrug, think "who cares" and simply proves once again if there is a slight controversy that people try to ride, they'll make money.
Good job there buddy!

I think it's a rather stupid idea but honestly who cares. Holy crap, that woman is a sadist, she took candy from a baby. Not exactly a hot button topic on a grand historical level. Personally, I would like to have her take pictures of Thomas Kincaid "Painter of Light" getting the sh*t kicked out of him for making millions selling cheesy motel wall art to old ladies.

Wow, mistreated? Hmmm.... Why did you choose to post this article and not hundreds of thousands of others where children are really mistreated (like an acid bath, or daddy touching them)? Oh wait, because somehow you could work a liberal bashing session into this one.
If you are so disturbed by this then why don't you go on an all out "war against art?"
Please..... Are you really bothered by this or is it all an act?
My dad told me I couldn't have certain stuff, and (GASP) took it right out of my hands on occasion. I'm sure I even cried about it when I was younger. I could have sent the bastard to prison for abuse this whole time? Damn, maybe I should even create a pointless thread about it on a military photo site. I think I'll title it "The Psychosis that is my Republican Father!"
