Hi all, I'm back from Mexico!
My birthdays coming up here soon and I'm gonna get a new video card (I have to pay for half of it! :( ) and I was wondering what you guys think I should get for around $300.
I have a P4 2.8ghz, Abit AI7 mobo, 1 gb of Kingston HyperX memory, and a SB Audigy 2.

It was ok, the boat only stayed at cozumal (sp?) for like 12 hours, spend most of my time at the beach.
The cruise there was very boring though

and i can't say this enough: you really should not buy any card right now, especially in the $300 range. the newest cards are going to kick the crap out of the latest (read: 2 years old) cards. TRUST ME. :|

NV40 and R420 are code numbers. NV38 is the latest nVidia card and R360 is the latest ATi card.
and you have a 9800??? and you want to 'upgrade'? :cantbeli: :)

Do either of the new cards have an advantage over the other

New cards are not coming out within a month. It going to be about 2-4months.

well, that part gets a little tricky. the R420 is supposed to improve on its previous (extremely effective) strategy from 8x1 pipes to 12x1 pipes and increasing the number of vertex shaders to 8. supposedly the performance gained from that will be about 33%.
however, nVidia is supposed to go from 4x2 pipelines to 16x1 or possibly 32x1 with the use of vertex shaders as temporary texture pipelines. nvidia's previous design was great for multi-texturing because it could handle 2 texture units per pipeline, but they might just abandon the whole multi-texturing advantage and go for raw power.
that is why you absolutely must wait for the next cards. :)

I read some rumor that nVidia might go 8x2...just a rumor though.

haiw, that was a pretty early rumor. the 'most reliable' rumor has it at 16x1 and possibly 32x1 with use of vertex shaders as temporary pipelines with a sacrifice in image quality for those textures being rendered with the vertex pipes.
ATi is almost certain to have 8 vertex pipelines (from 2 i believe) with a 12x1 setup.

I have run 3dmark2003, I get like 2500 i think (compared to people with my same basic system setup that get like 5000 and up) , they all pretty much run choppy exept for the Airplane scene. (Wings of Fury, perhaps?)

That's a crappy score for your video card. I got 5760 in 3dmark2003 with this setup:
AMD xp2500@2300mhz
Corsair 1024mb PC3200 400mhz
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro AIW 128mb
Asus A7N8X Deluxe

My guess is that you have some 'stripped down' version of the Radeon 9800. You should go for the Pro-versions if you want good performance.

yeah, you probably bought the 9800 SE (**** edition). :(
oh well. it's good that it was cheap, though. when you upgrade to the next gen card, it'll blow your mind. :)
