Police provide security as people off load ballots in Mbuji Mayi, Congo, Monday, July 31, 2006. Election officials were reopening dozens of polling stations Monday for a second day in the stronghold of a boycotting Congo politician, giving voters another chance to cast ballots after violence kept them from voting in historic elections a day earlier, officials said. Amid stepped-up security, authorities would reopen 172 polling stations in the central diamond-mining Congo city of Mbuji-Mayi, where presumed supporters of veteran politician Etienne Tshisekedi burned polling stations and voting material during Sunday's watershed vote, said Hubert Tisuaka, an election official. Earlier, three soldiers were lightly injured when their Puma-type armored vehicle turned over. An IDF tank which set out on a rescue mission was struck by an anti-tank missile but there were no injuries and the vehicles which absorbed the attack have been taken out of the combat zone. IDF sources told Ynet that ground forces are continuing to operate in the area, searching for Hizbullah infrastructures, arms, communication equipment, and other types of equipment.

Israeli army tanks stop on the road next to an overturned vehicle that was carrying supplies when it went off the road on the Lebanese side of the border, Monday, July 31, 2006. Hezbollah guerrillas attacked an Israeli tank in southern Lebanon on Monday, wounding three soldiers, and Israeli warplanes fired into open areas near the village of Taybeh to protect its ground forces, the military said. I heard they use olive green so that they don't confuse their friendlies with terrorists, since terrorists are always using camouflage.

Some speculation on other websites mentioned of TOW (apparently no ATGM heavier is confirmed as avail in Hez's arsenal???).

Eitherway, the left front armor module is pretty much out of action. Tank headed back to Israel for repair.

If this was indeed the damage from a TOW, I'd hate to see what a heavier missile (TOW-2, Kornet, Hellfire, Maverick, etc) would do to it. :(

Here's the Merkava 4 with its turret NERA armor module removed (I think to access the engine for maintenance, one'd have to remove the turret armor module):

[edit to remove the Merkava 4 internal armor module pic]

Apparently the armor module is comprised of slanted plates. Once these plates are destroyed, I think the majority of the armor value is gone (could be wrong though, but the bare-boned turret armor seems conventional and not that significant).

Again these are just my uneducated opinions so take it with big grains of salt.. :)

The crew seem to have gotten out under their own power. One of the better quotes in the Walla.co.il video was about the Hizb. positions along the border. It showed engineers with dozers flattening them and preparing charges. "What the missiles don't do from above, the D-9 does."

Correction, I meant the Metis-M.

As for the Kornet, they already used them in the incident at al-Ghajar according to the IDF.

The Metis-M was used in Bint Jbil according to the head of the Israeli Operations Directorate.

they also use RPG7 (who doesnt?), RPG29 (was captured in a failed cross boarder attack a few months ago), some 106mm recoiless cannons, the Iranian TOW copy (tufan? something like that), Matis (one of the tanks in Lebanon was hit by one a few days ago). they said they also use the Kornet-E (probebly got those from Syria), but I havent seen any pictures of it (yet).

So the US Army also claimed Kornet in Iraq but none has ever been substantiated. The moment a tank'd been penetrated, someone will immediately claim Kornet. I have not seen pics or confirmation from IDF that they have captured a Kornet launcher/round/expended tube.

Does the IDF have any proof of Metis-M?

Thanks.

Minorities in the IDF

Druze Arabs and Circassians, like Israeli Jews, serve mandatory service in the IDF. In recent years, some Druze officers have reached positions in the IDF as high as Major General and many have received orders of distinction.

Service is not mandatory for all other Israeli minorities (notably Israeli Arabs but also Black Hebrews and others). However, a large number of Bedouin, as well as some Christian Arabs and even a few Muslim Arabs, volunteer. Six Israeli Arabs have received orders of distinction as a part of their military service; of them the most famous is a Bedouin officer, Lieutenant Colonel Abd El-Amin Hajer (also known as Amos Yarkoni), who received the Order of Distinction. Recently, a Bedouin officer was promoted to the rank of Colonel. [citation needed]

No direct social benefits are tied to completion of military service, but doing so is sometimes required for attaining security clearance and serving in some types of government positions (in most cases, security-related), as well as some indirect benefits. Israeli Arabs claim that this puts them at a disadvantage vs. non-Arab Israeli citizens - although any Israeli Arab has the opportunity to do military service, if he or she wants to. The Israeli government claims that this arrangement provides equal opportunity for the Arab population. On the other hand, non-Arab Israelis could argue that the mandatory two-year military service puts them at a disadvantage, as they effectively lose two years of their life through their service in the IDF, while the Arab Israelis are able to start right into their jobs after school, or study at a university. According to the 2004 U.S. State Department Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for Israel and the occupied territories, "Israeli Arabs were not required to perform mandatory military service and, in practice, only a small percentage of Israeli Arabs served in the military. Those who did not serve in the army had less access than other citizens to social and economic benefits for which military service was a prerequisite or an advantage, such as housing, new-household subsidies, and employment, especially government or security-related industrial employment. Regarding the latter, for security reasons, Israeli Arabs generally were restricted from working in companies with defense contracts or in security-related fields." In recent years, there have been several initiatives to enable Israeli Arabs to volunteer for civilian National Service instead of to the IDF, completion of which would grant the same privileges as those granted to IDF veterans. However, this plan has gained strong resistance from Arab members of the parliament, and as a result, has not been implemented yet.

Since 1993, homo******s have been allowed to openly serve in the military, including special units.

all jewish israelis are required to do service of some sort whether it be community service, religous study or military service! I want to say of the 8 million people in the country... 5/8 are jewish while about 3/8 arab and others which include christian arabs, druze and bedoins. Druze do service in the military as well as some bedoins . The arabs are forbidden in the army because Israel's arabs are related to the palis, jordanians, egyptians, jordanians, and syrians. It would compromise security if they were allowed to serve b/c they might a)desert b)serve as spys c)turn on other israeli soldier/civilians!!!

first of all, Beduins are arabs.
second of all, you are wrong. arabs can join the army if they choose to, just like the other minorities.

I heard they use olive green so that they don't confuse their friendlies with terrorists, since terrorists are always using camouflage.

I seem to remember that the Israeli's used to use a French style lizard pattern cammo. Then the PLO started to use it too, so the IDF dropped it.

huh?!
first of all, Beduins are arabs.
second of all, you are wrong. arabs can join the army if they choose to, just like the other minorities.

first off the beduins are arabs but they did not have a home country to be loyal to unlike the arabs that did not leave in 1948, who are more likely to be aligned with one of the outside arab countries or palis! I may be not be totally wrong about arabs joinin the army, but that doesn't mean that the arabs(not beduin) are put under a microscope as they could be a security hazard!!! Beduins serve as excelent trackers by the way!

p-)

"Notably, while the Arab Muslims in Israel constitute about 20 percent of the population, only 20 join the army each year." YNET

"The question of loyalty
As Michael noted, his young student is bound to face the question of where his loyalties lie.

"I sincerely told him that there is the problem of loyalty. I told him that it would be hard to send an Arab to bombard other Arabs, whether in Gaza or in Lebanon," Michael said.

"But he said, 'I belong to the state of Israel, just try me and you'll see. I live in this country, and am willing to do what is required of me,'" Michael recalled.

The youth explained in his letter that his wish to enlist stems from true patriotism to the state.

"Although I am not obligated to join the IDF… I want to serve like any other citizen in the country. I was raised on the values of loving Israel, and the moral commitment to contribute to the state," he wrote."

What's more impressive is that it's flying for the last 32 years, must be one hell of a good maintenance the americans are doing on this Fighter.

An Israeli tank rolls along the Israeli-Lebanon border during an operation to pull out two tanks which were targeted in Lebanon by a missile fired by Hezbollah fighters near the Lebanese village of Kfar Kila (background), 31 July 2006. No injuries were reported. Israeli forces carried out an air strike today in support of a ground operation near the southeastern Lebanese border village of Taibe, an army spokesman told AFP. The action came despite an Israeli pledge to halt air raids for 48 hours. AFP PHOTO/ MENAHEM KAHANA (Photo credit should read MENAHEM KAHANA/AFP/***** Images)

Merkava tanks prove their mettle

"It was a small hit; we thought they were only mortar shells," recalled Sec.-Lt. Yotam. His Merkava 4 tank had been directly hit by two anti-tank missiles. The four crew members evacuated to another tank, unscathed.
Their tank was dragged back to the Israeli side of the border, south of Metulla, and technical crews clambered over it, astonished at the way it had withstood the attack.

Among them were members of the Defense Ministry's Merkava Project Directorate, some with a 20-year record in the development of Israel's main indigenous weapon system. The look of satisfaction on the face of Lt.-Col. Baruch Mazliah, head of the armor department in the Merkava Project, said it all.

"It did the job it was supposed to do," he said, patting the tank's side.

But the success of the latest version of the Merkava did little to hide the frustration of the soldiers at the fact that despite their efforts, Hizbullah anti-tank teams were still acting, hidden in positions so near the border, within mortar range of Israel's northernmost town.

The tank crews of Brigade 401 spent 36 hours in Lebanon over the weekend, cooped up in their tanks, taking "Stopit" tablets to control their bodily functions, and hunting for Hizbullah fighters in the villages of Kilah, Adisah and A-Taibe.

Despite the success of the tanks and soldiers of the Nahal infantry brigade in killing about 20 Hizbullah members in and around the villages, they were still unable to eradicate their presence, as was proved by the anti-tank missile firings at the tanks returning on Monday morning.

"We saw a missile flying over the border road behind us," said a tank commander. Two tanks that were hit and an engineering corps Puma AFV that had overturned just within the fences had to be dragged out by other tanks, while the artillery supplied covering fire on the hills opposite Metulla.

Smoke bombs were also fired to hide the force from Hizbullah gun-sights. Altogether nine soldiers were lightly wounded in the fighting. The consensus was that with less well-armored tanks, the toll would have been much higher.

"Actually most of the time it was a bit boring," complained Yotam. "My tank barely did any shooting. It was very hard to see them from inside the tank."

The company commander said that he had done quite a bit of shooting. "Now we're waiting to go back in again. It wasn't easy sitting in the tank for 36 hours, but that's what we're trained to do and what the tanks are built for. We'll go back in for as long as it takes," he said.

The continuing presence of Hizbullah around the border villages caused the IDF to spread a wide security perimeter around Metulla.

Squads of reserve soldiers, called up 10 days ago, were stationed next to the border. This is one of the first operational tasks to be carried out by the reserve units, who haven't yet taken part in battles across the border.

The fighting around Metulla hasn't allowed the local farmers to pick the apples, most still hanging ripe on the trees, some already rotting on the ground. Only the reservists have been enjoying them.
On Monday night, the government was expected to authorize the use of these soldiers in wider ground operations planned to take place over the next few days within Lebanese villages.

Technical stuff: It remains to be seen how well and IF the Merkava's armor will stand up to hits by modern, tandem warhead ATGMs. So far I have seen only older, single warhead missiles in use over there. If any modern tank is hit by, say, a Hellfire (AGM-114 with tandem warhead), or a Kornet, TRIGAT, or any other comparable missile, the precursor warhead will either permaturely detonate the ERA (if fitted), or start penetration of the outer layer of stratified armor. The detonation of the main warhead will complete penetration of the tank's armor. And of course, no matter how well armored a tank is, top-attack munitions stand an excellent chance of taking out a tank, as its armor is thinnest at the top...

Beaufort, the article you posted I think is referring to the Merk 4 with the blown track.

Anyway, I realized that the armor did its job (i.e. protecting the crew) however the construction do seem a bit flimsy. One hit from an (assumed) medium ATGM and the NERA armor module was falling apart.

If you recall the "Cajones Eh" tank from OIF that took a Hellfire, a Maverick and finally a LGB to put it out of commission? Abeit for the impact holes, the armor package still held together despite being hit with the most powerful antitank missiles.

And I assume that it was something heavier.

Either way, both of us can't start reaching conclusions based on what we only assume.

The people who need to reach the conclusions know what hit that tank.

Didn't the tank take an RPG-7 to its exhaust grill and was not operable due to this?

CANADIAN SPECIAL OPERATIONS REGIMENT
http://www.rcinet.ca/rci/images/spacer.gif
In the first week of this new year it was announced that the Canadian Military is creating a new Special Forces Unit. With 750 members, it will be similar in function to the American Green Berets.

The Canadian Forces currently have about 53 thousand trained personnel. Some people feel our military is understaffed. There are demands to increase the forces to 75 thousand, and perhaps as many as 90 thousand members. But it appears that special units and elite forces are the future in the Canadian military these days

Canada already has the Joint Task Force 2 Commando Unit, based in Ottawa. The J T F 2 as its known, has been winning rave reviews for its work in Afghanistan in the American-led war on terror. It too, is being expanded, under the umbrella of the new "Canada Special Operations Command." Eventually this formation, with the combined units and regiments under its command, will grow to about 22 hundred to 25 hundred members.

These developments are part of the Liberal government's defence policy statement of last year. It called for an expansion of the country's special forces. In this current national election campaign, the conservative candidate, Stephen Harper, is promising a 650-strong airborne battalion. Canada had an elite airborne regiment but it was disbanded in 1995 after some of its members tortured and killed a Somali teenager while stationed in that country.

Military spokesman, Major Doug Allison said the new unit will have similar skills to the disbanded airborne regiment, but its role will be different. Where the airborne regiment was prepared for a Cold War conventional battle, the new regiment will be trained for the war on terror and special operations. The major described the unit as one with "high mobility, high training in both conventional and non-conventional capabilities, and he said they'll be able to operate off the land without significant logistical support.

The Special Forces Unit is to be based in Pettawawa, just up river from Ottawa. A group of 60 selected personnel are heading to the base between now and March to establish the unit's headquarters.
In the beginning, the majority of the soldiers will be from the base's 3rd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, and volunteers will be selected from other bases across the country. The new regiment is expected to be operational by August.

Agree. However reason I think many people speculated that it was a medium ATGM is because that's what the IDF has found/captured so far. Though I agree that fact does not preclude the use of heavier ATGM by Hez.

Right. Charlie 1-2 "Cojones Eh?" took a RPG round to the rear exhaust grill and the fuel line started burning. They were spending too much time trying to put the fire out (this was during the Thunder Run to Baghdad) so they decided to destroy it using thermite grenades, then 120mm HEAT, then Hellfire, then Maverick, and finally LGB.

My point was that after all this, the turret armor package construction still held itself together.

anyway, i'm sure there will be many lessons to be learned from this conflict and if the Merkava designers will find it necessary to improve the armor than it will be done, i don't think getting an increase in the defence budget would be very diffiuclt now.

I heard that but I also noted earlier that US Army also claimed that Kornet was used against M1s during OIF. That was later determined to be false. Any time our seemingly invincible tanks (M1s, Merks) have been penetrated, Kornet has always been the fall guy.

Syria has the Metis-M and the Kornet in its arsenal.

If they don't mind arming Hizbollah with rockets that can reach Haifa, then I doubt that they had any problems with providing them with third generation ATGMs.

I thought that was Iran who armed Hez with long range rockets, using Syria as transport point?

Anyway, they did not arm the Iraqi resistance (who are mainly Sunnis and Baath - same with Assad) with Kornet, they may choose to not arm the Hez (who are mainly Shi'as) with it.

Iran supplies the bulk of the weaponry and funding.

However Syria also arms Hizbollah.

For example the rockets that were fired at Haifa are Syrian made.

The difference is that the Kornets were fired at Israel's territory already during the al-Ghajar incident in November 2005.

Yep you're right, Assad is Alawite. I should have said the Baath part for Assad and Sunnis like most Syrians.

I don't deny the possibility that Syria supply Hez with advanced weapons. Just that too many claims and no proof (at least publicly) about Kornets anytime a tank got hit.
