Outraged by reports of armed robberies on the National Mall, spikes in criminal assaults, and the brutal murder of a British citizen working as a political activist here, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) has called on Congress and the Washington, DC, municipal government to abolish the District’s 30-year-old gun control regulations.
Under the gun control ordinance adopted in 1976, handguns are banned and long guns must be dismantled.
“For 30 years,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, “we have witnessed the cruel hoax of restrictive gun laws in our nation’s capitol. The insanity of gun control is revealed in the murder, rape, assault and robbery statistics that make the District of Columbia the crime capital of America.”
Associated Press (AP) reported two weeks ago that robberies are up 14% and armed assaults had climbed 18% since mid-June. During that time, British subject Alan Senitt was murdered in Georgetown by thugs who slit his throat and attempted to rape his female companion at gunpoint.
On July 11, Metropolitan Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey declared a citywide “crime emergency,” according to The Washington Times.
“This is what happens,” Gottlieb argued, “when law-abiding citizens are told their Second Amendment rights have been suspended through elitist government fiat, and that they cannot possess the tools to defend themselves against criminal predators.”
For days following the Senitt murder, the press headlined lawlessness in the District, yet remained silent about the connection between rampant lawlessness and the fact that for the past three decades, it has been illegal for a law-abiding citizen to have a handgun in the home for personal protection.
Two different groups of tourists were robbed at gunpoint on the National Mall in one evening about 15 minutes apart, and AP reported similar, earlier robberies in the Spring. There had been no arrests.
“The City Council, through three decades of social ignorance, has turned over the streets of our Capitol to outlaws, and the outlaws know it,” added CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron.
He contended that after the city adopted the gun ban, “the city administration should have hung signs at the city limits welcoming thugs and telling law-abiding citizens that their right to self-defense does not exist within these borders.”
“What’s happening in Washington, DC, today is an outrage,” Waldron added, “yet the people in charge refuse to admit their gun restrictions are responsible. They continue to perpetuate a myth that gun control makes the city safer. This recent crime wave makes it plain that restrictive gun control has no benefits except for criminals, and that those who defend the existing restrictions are defending a lie.”
Gottlieb was not impressed after Ramsey announced that the police department would look at officer deployment and crime trends, to see whether officers could be moved around. Instead, Gottlieb said the time has come for Washington, DC’s gun ban to be repealed so that citizens could take back their neighborhoods.
“We call upon the city government and Congress to immediately repeal the District’s Draconian gun regulations,” Gottlieb concluded. “The city’s law-abiding citizens must be allowed to fight back. . . . This risk-free working environment for criminals must end now.”
Gottlieb said any municipal politician or member of Congress opposed to such a move because they don’t trust citizens with firearms should resign from office.
Legislation in Congress, which has oversight of DC government, to repeal the city gun ban has been languishing on Capitol Hill for at least the past two years, with Washington politicians fighting every attempt to bring the repeal measure to a vote, while wringing their hands about the gun-related violence that stalks the streets.
