An Army Of One – TV documentary about the lives of three people enlisting into the US Army.

Last night I watched an excellent documentary about the lives of three people that joined the US Army post September 11th 2001; it follows the immediate swell of national pride to serve in America’s forces to the harsh reality of what army life really entails.
Two of the recruits sink into a world of depression, booze (even self mutilation) the third a young woman from a modern dance background makes the most of it and becomes apart of Airborne.

If you want to see raw multiple viewpoints about life in the US army I highly recommend this documentary, it raises some interesting questions about those that fall through the cracks and seem to receive little support from the military institution.

It does not condemn or make any judgments about Armed forces, just shows the lives of three raw recruits for approximately three years.

I saw it a couple weeks ago on CBC Newsworld. It was stupid. It was a typical canadian anti american documentary. Everyone in it was against the army and said they were just brainwashing people etc. The only person who wasn't against it was the girl that was in some airborn unit and went to iraq. But even she had he lesbian hippy friend who was anti us/anti war. :cantbeli:

Well, each to their own.
I found it to be an interesting show and the politics didn't bother me at all.
If you go into watching something with a mindset of "if they disagree with me this show sucks", I don't see how you can broaden your mindset.

I think serious issues were raised about the social alienation recruits can feel and that they can't freely express their issues because (in their eyes) no one wants to listen to them.

It also showed that people could excel in the Army like the female recruit who wasn't sure what to do with her life.

More raw documentaries like this would be interesting.

I watched it on Australia’s SBS station farmgirl; I'm not sure what US station played the show.

Thanks, Mocking.... I'll look for it and let you know what I think. I agree with you regarding watching (and/or reading) shows/books with a variety of view points. There isn't much to be learned by simply shutting one's mind off to all other possibilities. Growth comes from expanding one's mind.

(hey... I know I'm preaching to the choir here.... you're already wise in the ways of science ;))

:D

I think alot of people miss the point of a documentary, it's good to have the subjects express themselves even if it offends our personal sensibilities.
I didn't find myself drawn to have any great affection for the three recruits but I found the journey of their lives in the Army to be really interesting.

Now I sound like a raging git.

in regards to the whole "An Army of One" ad campaign, does anyone else feel that the slogan kinda contradicts the core values of the army, specifically the stress that is placed on teamwork?

I didn't get much out of it. It turned into a typical leftie military bashing programe.
I would be interested in finding out how many recruits they followed around, to find the three that would make the poorest impression on the caliber of current American recruits.
The young girl was the only one who made a go of it, but managed to bring some baggage in the form of a anti military girl friend.
I give it half a star.

What exactly does it tell you? That he is willing to watch a documentary and keep an open mind? Yeah... tells me a lot too. I respect him more now than ever.
