Anyone here skeet shoot?(thats clay pigeons/targets to you non rednecks). I dont know a damn thing about it, but I need a new hobby. My mate who also knows nothing, but just went on a shoot at a wedding he went to, is trying to get us into it.
Anyone recomend a good starter shotgun? Semi-auto 12 guage around $500.
I can get a used Benelli M2 for about that price, but I dont know if thats good for skeet or what.
Someone help a noob out?
Cheers.

I shoot skeet but, being poor, I just use a Mossberg 500. It's a pump, but it only cost $150 on sale during the Gart Sports merger. My cousin's got a Remington 11-87 and it shot pretty well when I used it, but it started jamming after around half a thousand shells were put through it in one sitting. It'll be pretty hard to find a new semi-auto for around $500, but as far as shotguns go a used one won't be much different from a new one, except for maybe a few nicks.

Remington 1100 is a good choice for starting out, mine went **** up after a similar round count, it also beat the hell out of my shoulder after a couple of days with a lot of shells downrange. I recently bought a Bernardelli from CDNN Investments (http://www.cdnninvestments.com/), and I find it to be the perfect gun. Quick and Balanced, very "soft shooting" fixed comb, Monte Carlo style stock, with a vent rib. Very nice... got it for a song at $350. Came with 4 interchangeable chokes and hi viz zights. I took it to a class, and sold 5 more while I was there, just letting folks try mine.
Good Luck

Be careful with newer 1187 and 1100's. I've had to fix a few where the elevator/lifter thing release button got jammed in the upward position, making it "impossible" to push the bolt into battery.
I'd go 1100. Simpler and cheaper.

I haven't shot skeet in ages, but used to use a friends Remington 1100, and later my Dad's Browning skeet gun which I now own.
A short barreled/open choked o/u gun is superb for skeet, but I also loved the 1100 which had a 26" ribbed barrel.

Yes I have shot one, the good thing is that you can make your own special loads and the gun will cycle.

Shooting skeet or trap is probably the most fun I've had with firearms other than machineguns. Whenever I would get bored with sitting at a bench cycling a bolt, I would head up to the skeet range and spend a long time blasting clays. I can shoot most targets on the trap range but the number 8 position always gives me trouble.

Okay, we use them for different things. So I am sorry. Maybe it's great for skeet shooting. I apologize.

Remington 1100 in 20 Guage, you get better, wider coverage at the same range with less recoil to deal with for your follow up shot.

mossys are nice..a good 500 series works great for a cheaper pump gun..
Nosing through the CDNN catalog..I saw a good deal some months ago on a HK Fabarams/Lion semi-auto..granted they aren't as popular as the remmys..but they get the job done..
just my 2c.

As the youngest guy at our shooting range I've won a couple of golden trophies from skeet. I'd suggest an over-and-under shotgun for clay, no misfeeds with those puny loads. I've watched a couple of guys with their Benellis and Remingtons curse as they don't feed well. I use an old spanish Lanber 12/76 O/U that I got for 50€. It hasn't failed on me yet and it shoots good.
