From correspondents in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
August 09, 2006
A BRAZILIAN man died when he tried to open what police believe was a rocket-propelled grenade with a sledgehammer in a mechanical workshop on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.
Another man who was in the workshop at the time of the explosion was rushed to a hospital with severe burns, a police officer told *******.
The workshop was destroyed and several cars parked outside caught fire.
Police found several unexploded army issue rocket-propelled grenades in the workshop.
They believe the ammunition had been brought there by scavengers wanting to sell them as scrap metal, but they also are investigating a possible link to Rio's heavily armed drug gangs who often raid military bases.

Wasn't there a guy that wanted to clean the chimney and needed some heavy stuff on the brush, and then (tried) to weld a hand grenade so he could use it as a weight? (could be an urban myth though.)

Wouldnt surprise me at all if it was true
we saw several people in afghanistan who had been treated for trying to open landmines with hammers.....not a very pretty sight

There are fuc*wits everywhere, some time ago I heard some guy in Arizona strapped some rocket boosters (RATO if I am not mistaken) to his Chevy,, found what was left of him, a red stain, splattered against a mountain. Mind you we have "drongo's" here as well, after all we have re-elected John Howard as PM 4 times now, and the b8gger is likely win a fifth election, go figure.

I'm going to have to 2nd that.
Aussie Sapper, of all people, I would have thought you would have appreciated the amount of money the Libs are pumping into the ADF, and the fact that our boys are finally getting the deployments they deserve.

You lot are being inane! The Liberals are keeping Australia cruising. The economy is strong, unemployment is low, the military is being strengthened, healthcare and education are still reasonable - what else do you need? So John Howard can seem like a lame duck. But this is more about the Tall Poppy complex than anything else... He's intelligent and capable, and he's keeping ANZUS alive.
I vote Liberal because I love Australia; don't you?

I read this on socnet a few days ago. Seems applicable here, as a wise man said
how many people would simply stop and die in place if breathing were not a brain stem function.
If breathing required cognitive, rational, analytical thought there would be no issues with overpopulation.
There'd be a bunch of dead people with blue faces all over the place.

Mate,,I served my (our) country in the 80's and early 90's, when we had Hawke and Keating in Canberra, and I had to cope with things as they were back then, so I am entirely familiar with what you mean about what the Libs have done to improve things in the ADF. But, that still does not "endear" me to "little Johnny". Mind you, Beazley is not much (if worse) of a better alternative.
I think what we have here is a bit of a dilema,,,,

Ditto............. There is no other .....
I make light of John Howard in previous post ... But that does not mean
I think he is a bad Prime Minister indeed quite the opposite ...............
The alternative is fearful contemplating......
This a humour thread .. enough of serious issues

Mate,, in as much I am not a Liberal supporter, you are 100% right on many "levels". And, whilst, a bit of politcal "discussion" only does good, I also agree with your point on not letting this get too serious.
Have a "good one"

This one reminds me of a story that occured some time during the mid 80's, when one squaddie serving with the 2nd battalion of Brig N at Skjold picked up the rocket motor tail section of an M-72 LAW, that had been fired on the Mauken range, and brought it back with him to the barracks as a throphy. Stowing the thing in his locker. Unfortunately for him there was quite a bit of powder left that had not been burned up when the weapon had initialy been fired.
Thus for some reason or another that residue powder got touched off and propelled the LAW tail section through the roof of the locker, then through the roof of the barracks room and into another locker in the room on the floor above, then out through the door of that locker and into the roof of that room, before coming to a stop.
If you have access to complete years editions of "Mannskapsavisa" or "Forsvarets forum" from the 1980's you'll find the story in there somewhere.
