View Full Version : Best Fictional Army
Just like the title says. What in your opinion, is the best fictional army out there?
Can't be a real army. Must be fictional.
Imperial Army.

What is your criteria for "best"? The one displaying the most tactical and operational competence? Or just plain cool?
Tactical Competence: Colonial Marine Corps, Aliens.
Sheer, Overwhelming, Awesomeness: Imperial Guard, Warhammer 40,000
Honorary mention to anything written by David Weber.

For now:
Actual Army: Army of the Dead from LOTR Return of the King (movie, not book. All that happens in the book is that they scare the Corsairs of Umbar s**tless, causing them to jump out of their ships and drown)
Military: The Covenant from Halo, especially the Elites and Hunters, even if they are religious nutjobs.

Maybe compared to real-life militaries, but as far as on-screen sci-fi ones go they are among the best. Compare them to Stormtroopers, Clonetroopers, anything in Star Trek, movie Mobile Infantry, etc.... the CMC is heads above them all. Ever see the others use bounding overwatch? Hell, outside of the CMC only the Clonetroopers have anything even approaching practical vehicular support (LAAT/i gunships, the imitation-Hind).

I love the IG in 40K. Regular humans against the monsterous hordes... gotta love it. The Leman Russ might be silly and exaggerated-looking for a MBT, but in the silly & exaggerated theme of Warhammer 40K, that is one sexy tank...
I also really enjoy the combined-arms aspect of the Tau, except that I prefer the reformed Space Communist theme of O'shovah rather than the standard cheese-factor of 3 Railheads in your regular Space Communist Tau army. Seeker missiles might not be t3h awesomest weapons around, but I just like the idea of my infantry units calling in heavy fire support via their markerlights.

I hear the 40K RTS is good... but I've not played it. I don't have enough time to play the computer games that I do have, so buying a newer one more would make no sense.
Neither does building a new 40K army under the newer 4th edition rules, but that's what I am trying to do (one local retailer has GW stuff for 25% off... another one sells it at 15% off... so that's nice, although 25% off of overpriced is still overpriced... but when you can get a Hammerhead or Leman Russ or Chaos Defiler at 25% less than you'd pay otherwise, then it does get more attractive).

Agreed. They simply weren't expecting Picard and those time travelling mofus.. IIRC they made it the first time, and obviously that kind of tactic worked in other parts of the galaxy. I believe the got some one fourth or so of it as their controlled space.
Another shytty thing with them would probably be the total lack of initiative unless controlled from the Hive Queen. Isn't that what the Yanks are saying about Iraqi soldiers and NCOs, that they lack intitiative? I see a connection... :)

PS2/PS3/PSP only. That's why a bunch of idiots tried to claim it was the "Halo Killer".
To be honest the game is nothing more than a professionally made sci-fi mod for Call of Duty. The atmosphere and the graphics are great, and the helghast are some of the coolest enemies ever, but other than that its pretty vanilla. Also, aiming with the sniper rifle is like guiding a blind man with sign language.

I change my opinion for favorite military from Covenant from Halo to Yuuzhan Vong. Again, religious nutjobs, but great, albeit a little psychotic, fighters. To hell with the Yuuzhan Vong. I submit Ganner Rhysode, the one-man army Jedi.

Hey, I am not that type of Star Wars geek. I just mostly read the books and graphic novels. I hardly ever watch the movies, especially after reading the books, which are pretty scientificly accurate (example: no sound in space). The books kinda make the movies, especially the prequels (man the are awful), suck. The Trilogy is excuseable.

The current Jacen Solo would own both Ki-Adi-Mundi and Ganner at the same time. He was able to deflect friggin' turbolaser volleys with one hand! BTW, the Chiss would also be one of my favorite militaries. Grand Admiral Thrawn is the shiz.

The books that I've read are overwhelmingly superior in story, character development, and simply bringing the SW universe alive. On a whim, I decided to read Vector Prime, and I was absolutely blown away, especially by its grounding in reality and that it's much darker than any of the movies. And the NJO series has only gotten better as I've read more of it.

Still, I just thougt that Matthew Stover did an amazing job with Ganner's death, and took what was a mostly an average character and made him into a truly memorable hero.

Also, why does everyone think that the IG from Warhammer 40k are they best? Sure, they look cool, but they suffer from a serious case of stormtrooper effect.
Yes, your average Imperial Guardsman is just your regular human bean in a universe full of inhuman adversaries... but it's that combined arms of the guard that are so cool.
Especially in 4th edition, your Space Marine army doesn't need that combined arms effort (not just the Ultramarines & the other big chapters... EVERY Space Marine army has some powerful tools now with the Traits system, like putting Tank Hunters vet skill on a Devastator squad, like Chaos Space Marines can do to their Havoks. It's kind of all or nothing with Space Marine vehicles)...
The Guard kind of need it. Guardsmen just aren't superhuman genetic freaks like the Adeptus Astartes... a Leman Russ or three go a long way in keeping alive your horde of dudes with t-shirts & flashlights.
Maybe that doesn't make them the "best" in terms of soldier-per-soldier power, but I think it makes them slightly more interesting to assemble... and as a whole army, that interdependence between armor & artillery & infantry & recon (Sentinels w/Improved Comms!) that makes them good.
/that being said, it's a dumb game with silly rules, and all the combined arms tactics in the world won't save you from the stupid dice

Are you kidding me. The Mon Calamari-class ships are nothing compaired to the Imperial Navy ships.Imperial Star Destroyers have alot more firepower, but Mon Cal cruisers have absurdly strong defenses. Furthermore, later model Mon Cal ships (Mediator and Viscount classes) are more than a match for their Star Destroyer peers.

True True. But I still believe Imperial ships are better. :)
The Super Star destoyer could own a whole fleet of mon calamari cruisers. unless of course the rebels get lucky and hit that One spot which causes the entire ship to loose power.
