I just read the thread about there being more fat people than hungry people, and I just figured I'd vent. If I offend anyone, oh well....I'm merely exercising my first amendment. I work at Lowe's, and like anywhere, you run into people from all walks of life, in all shapes and forms, and generally I don't have a problem. However....if there's one thing that just pisses me off to no end is whenever I see some fat bastard come into the store and helps himself to use the electric scooter. It's not because he/she is hurt or handicapped, but because he/she is so gawddamn fat that it took nearly every ounce of strength they could muster just to get across the damn parking lot! The fact we only have two of those scooters, and when both are in use as fat people shuttles, it just enrages me whenever someone who really does need it can't use it because fatty fat mcfatty fat pants is too tired to walk. I see this happen at least once a day and at least 4-5 times on a Saturday. I walk past them and they expect me to give them sympathy? Lose some freakin' weight, slice off some of that salt pork from your sides and I might just throw you a rice cookie.....there's my sympathy!
Iam on youre boat, i think to myself when heavy people start whining about they are too fat, makes me just wanna scream "get off you´re seat and start walking then" ive never understood why they whine when they can lose weight as easy as everybody else.
Thank you wicked hind for that fascinating topic.

Ahhh....a fellow Lowes employee! I saw the same exact thing happen at my store! It's all over the place! I feel really bad for the people that actually need to use them, but don't get the chance because someone else who doesn't really need it has it. Life just isn't fair.

A little different from his described situation, no?
People are homeless for a variety of reasons, mostly out of their serious control, homelessness is a downward spiral that is incredibly hard to break and has frequent relapse. Not to say being fat is easy, but one certainly has more power to change that than being homeless.
Now I agree some people are born fat, but the situation described by the original poster can not all be those situations. He is bringing up a fact that where he lives there is a high proportion of people who are fat because they,
1. Eat too much, and unhealthy foods
2. Do not commit themselves to enough physical exercise
Both situations are within their power to change.
I salute this frickin topic, I agree completely. It is not that bloody hard to keep in shape
EAT LESS no effort there, just logic.
And there's another way, eat, but exercise.
Fat people piss me off, I will never give them excuses. It's not a curse, nor something you can't alter, it's just pathetic.

And the backwards logic of riding a scooter.....it's only making you fatter.

-Real estate tax
-Have them pay rent for the space they take up at your store
-Tell their acquaintance/s that they can't bring their van in the store. Oh wait, that's not a van, it's just a FAT KID!
-Make them put on a Kool-Aide man dress, and when they walk in say "OOOOHHHH YEAH!!!" and ask them for some Kool Aide.

^good!
With the exception of a (very) few conditions, being fat is a result of lifestyle. Everyone has different metabolism, and this changes as you get older, and maybe some people will always tip the scales on the heavy side even if they eat healthily and exercise, but no-one is unavoidably obese.
It's really very simple. Two things lose weight 1) eating less, and 2) doing exercise. If you do both, hey, double bonus!
Get off your fat seat and go for a run, fatty!

^If you have some hills, a rucksack, and some heavy stuff, then it is easy to lose weight. Mix all three together and add it to yourself, spread over a few kilometers and voila!
Hit some hills for a day with a bit of weight (15-20 kilos) and go at a steady pace (don't stroll) and you will be working in your fat burning zone for hours.

Overweight is a hard case when one has let it take over.
Excercising is harder and loosing weight takes more time than it would
take from normal people. Also overweight person gains weight back easier
than skinny person.
Best thing for overweight persons would be sign into army (or something like that)
and go through a two to three year long basic training. That would give
them enough time to loose weight and learn better nutrition.
This however doesn´t apply to those who are too sick to even move
or have some medical condition which prevents physical training.

Hey I got fat and I don't eat more than i've ate while I was slim.. I blame lack of movment much more than food consumption... nothing irritates me more than fat people, its absolutely ****ing disgusting. All this pointless obsession with diets and eating when all you need to do is GET UP OFF YOUR FAT ARSE and do some exercise!!!!! On a scientific/philosophical level, fat people technically shouldn't exist, if you look into any species within nature fatas****ness simply doesn't exist. Maybe some orwellian style Ministry of Justice should be set up; whose sole purpose it is to beast the **** out fat ppl, if they cant get fit..........they get turned into soylent green; that'll give them some motivation

I saw this 200lbs 12 year old doing this yesterday. I do agree with your statement and this may sound arrogant but too bad I, Me, have personally lost 70lbs from when I was 15 the first 40lbs in four months with proper diet and a more enlightened look at nutrition. I am sick and tired of seeing fat moms, dads, kids bitching about their weight, and then seeing them go and get ice cream. It's very simple, eat good natural healthy food in moderate portions with exercise and you lose weight.

Here is some more fuel for the fire.
I used to go with my church every Sunday afternoon to feed homeless people in the city. We would cook up some burgers and fries and let them sort throught the clothing donations we collect through the week. Over 90% of the homeless people were overweight. Most of the clothes we brought were too small for the homeless people that showed up. We called the program the "Feed the Hungry" Mission. I don't feed them anymore. They aren't hungry.
I also have seen on several occasions, a fat lady in a wheelchair working at a Pizza Hut or other retail store that didn't have any physical handicap. Basically she would remove the foot rests from the wheel chair and wedge her fat ass into the seat. Then she could use her feet to shuffle herself around the tables while sitting in the chair. Basically she had turned a wheelchair meant to give handicapped people some mobility, into an asswagon.
If my ass ever gets so big that I need to strap wheels to it and cart it around... please bludgeon me with a 2X4 until I am unconcious so that you can wrestle the bag of Funions out of my hand and use a controlled pair to put me out of my misery.
I know that some people have medical issues that make it difficult to stay thin.. but not the large number of obese people we have in the US.

My dad has a serious back problem.. that the military and the VA refused to fix. So for several years he was back and forth to several of their quacks getting opinions and more opinions.. finally they put him under the knife.. they fvcked it up, and now he's worse then ever.. he now works behind a desk as a civilian for the military doing th esame job, making more money, but his back is completly screwed.. They put him on severalmedications.. the first one (which he only takes once a day, because the 4 times a day would leave him like a zombie) causes him to retain fluid.. so he gained a **** load of weight.. the second is to help him to get rid of the fluid.. but he has to run to the toilet 20 times a day. (His back is completey fvcked) And the third one helps with the swelling fo his something or another.. anyway, he still goes to work, he takes only some of the medication because of it's effects, and he lives in more pain then before.. he's got all of this fluid on him, and now he's worst off.. but he still gets out works, and gets on with it.. and he doesn't sit in a chair at Lowes to get around.. he's got too much pride in him for that.. My mom broke here lower hip several years alo working at our house /farm.. and she just desided to give up on the system, and live with the pain.. then she broke her shoulder two months ago preparing to go on vacation.. she doen't stop for a second.. and just keeps on living..

I remember when I hurt my knee slightly during an obstacle course. I when nuts not being able to walk or run. I can't imagine how it must be like to willingly sit on your arse all day and not do something to compensate, like go running or work out.
The worst thing is this trend I see, where you get all these "diet products" that they say make you lose weight - without any effort! That really, really pisses me off. Losing wieght is just like gaining (muscle) weight - you have to work for it. That's the "fun" bit.

@Abolith - then you also have the chicks that everyone wanted to bang in High School and/or college, then BOOM! My ex fiance was a cheerleader in high school, kept her figure. She ended up dumping me, I saw her last year, HA, let me tell ya, she's packed on about 80-100lbs, ahhh, it was nice seeing that.

WHOOPS. Someone just pissed off el jeffe.
As most of you can see, CJ and I are of different opinion about this thread. Yet even as peers, I don't assume to talk **** to him. That whole respect members and don't be insulting is sort of the whole point here.
As far as this thread.. I have my own personal beef with obesity in general. I don't quite see it as people who are victims of some uncontrollable circumstance. But, not everyone has the right genes to keep them all slim and sexy.. the same way not all people are blessed with will power or pride. My brother is a pretty big guy. He is pushing 300 lbs and is on the verge of having some health issues because of it. He got the "big" gene from my dad.. but my father was able to keep it under control. My brother hasn't really made it a priority. It pisses me off because I know it will kill him if he continues at his present pace.
Granted that doesn't grant me the right to take cheap shots at fat people.. but at the same time, I think being tolerant and all PC about it is adding to our obesity problem in the US. Promiscuity, obesity, homo******ity, violent behavior.. all are behavioral issues that our culture has slowly decided are ok. I don't want to start a whole knew flame war here.. I am not comparing one behavior to the next.. but they are all behavioral states of being. Living at home with your mom is becoming a norm. This is because calling someone a lazy ****, a fat ass, a tramp or whore, is too personal of an attack. So now it is becoming acceptable to behave in those ways.

I have to agree with you on a lot of that. I do realize that there are some people who don't have the genes to have that slim & trim look. I'm also not into bashing fat people, I do very much get irritated on this subject because for a lot of people, it comes down to their voluntary meal choices of should I eat the Big Mac and Large Fry or should I eat Quarter Pounder and Shake, and damn it they know they should not have either one. I also know that to have the look you desire can take a lot of sacrifice and lifestyle change. I'm 180 degrees opposite of who and what I used to be.
So again as I said before, I understand that for some it is not their choice, But for a lot of them it's simply choosing to be lazy and not wanting to go to the gym and not wanting eat right and choosing to have two plates instead of one.

Well, since I arrived in Switzerland I've gained weight.. I guess it started with having to get back into school, and learn French. I begain to run again, and was running 4 times a week a 12 km route that I loved. I was in the gym every day, and was lifting weights.. I gain weight, as I gained muscle... I was in great shap, and was ridding my VTT (Mountain Bike), and started doing a 12 km route where I now live up here in the mountains.. I started Krav Maga, and that's where I got into trouble. I broke my back one night during training, about 4 years ago, and since have put on the weight. I was out for the first month, and then started training, but running, after the doc let me get back to work.. all was well, but I found that other parts of my back was throwing out on me.. one day after 4 months without a problem, my wife and I was 6 km into a 15 km route when my back suddenly went out, and I couldn't walk.. she ran back got the car, and picked me up.. she brought me to the ER, and they could do nix for me.. I then wen tto a Ostiopath, and he fixed me.. I've been a patient of his since.. Just when I'm doing great something happens.. I love to run, and try to run 3-4 times a week.. now, it's work that been slowing me down.. but I've started a life change, and it's first with what goes into my mouth.. at the same time I'm SLOWLY working out again, and am taking it slow.. once I've built back up, I'll get back into what I love agin.. and that's running.. As foir fat people.. I know lots of them, and will power and lazyness is one of their problems.. I worked in a gym, and have seen what people are capable of doing.. it just means doing it... I agree with Warpig about this... we are too PC today.. and because of this we are getting weaker.. I still find it a little strange when a 30 year man comes into my shop with his mom, so his mom can by him socks.. and she makes up his bed, cooks him dinner, and makes sure he has a clean pair of underwear each morning.. I started doing all of those things at a young age.. I cooked for my wife and I, and after I first moved ti Geneva, CH. she worked and I kept a clean house for us..

I fully agree with warpig on this one, let go the crazy ****e we're feeding ourselves (chips, snacks, sweets etc.) and start moving!!!. I know what I'm saying because I base this on my experiences. Because I have a preety timeconsuming office job I was eating at very irregular times and not moving at all. I'm 185cm tall (6 feet 1?). When I reached the triple digit mark on the scale I was suprised but thought it's only temporary. Some time after came a shock. I was so pissed off at myself so I changed food diet and habits and started serious MTB biking (Till now I try to do at least 20km daily) and renewed the karate trainings. I've lost 20kg (44lbs) and that's why I agree with the thread topic, start ****ing moving you lazy bastards!!!
Also when I was in US I noticed that many Americans are fat in a different way? Why is that?

I have a sedentary office job and I'm 42 years old but I'm still only 84 kg weight (1.90m tall) because I never do junk food, I do sit ups, press ups and bicep curls every weekday morning during the week as soon as I get out of bed, then I drive to my local swimming pool and swim for half an hour. Then I go to my office and have breakfast (usually porridge). At lunch time I walk for a mile (1.6 km?) round trip to get a sandwich. After work I go to the gym every weekday for about 90 mins and do rowing, X-country ski exercises and pullups.
I normally take the weekends off exercise unless I'm going skydiving or walking in the hills.
If you want to keep the weight off you have to do all that and not eat junk food/processed crap.

CJ made a good point. Taking cheap shots at fat people because they annoy us is pretty assholish. I was thinking about locking this thread but it seems that it is changing its direction as more of you take your personal struggles with weight and talk about them here.
Like I mentioned already.. obesity isn't some random disease that has struck the US. Of course, some people are just built big, some have valid physiological, and health issues that cause them to carry more weight.. but that isn't the overwhelming factor for the obesity in the US.
Many of us get pretty annoyed with fat people because we know that so many are that way because they refuse to take care of themselves. Driving the car 30 feet to the mail box, taking the scooter meant for the handicapped or elderly, ordering 4 cheesburgers, the monster fries, and a gallon of "diet" coke. All annoying, but really not reason for the anger we generate.
Obesity has always been a very negative image in humane culture.. so when you add the lazy and ridiculous habits to that image, we get all hateful and ****ty about it. We rant and complain under our breath in internet forums instead of making a public outcry about it. We laugh and complain about the fat lady that is suing McDonalds for making her fat... yet it doesn't take a genious to realize that fast food is turning us into fat lazy zombies. Why shop for groceries, cook dinner, and then have to do dishes when you can pull up to the drive through, order by number and have it eaten before you even get home? Heck you don't even have to clean up after yourself, just pitch the empty bag in the back seat.
So, what do we do about it?
titget

So, what do we do about it?
You make good points Warpig..I will admit I'm one of those people who gets annoyed and disgusted with fat people..I dont understand why it's so hard to eat right, or not eat yourself into obesity..but everybody has their own personal struggles..I still smoke when I drink...I've tried to stop, but after 3 beers..I'll probably smoke a pack before the nights through..Some people have struggles with alcohol, drugs...*** ect.ect.. Seems fat people just get the least understanding of these addictions,Bulemics and Anorexics we feel sorry for.
I don't think there's much we can do about it. Today's society is designed to make fat people. so many temptations, greasy food that's fast and convienent, for most people the only excercize they get is walking to their car in a parking lot... The ones I feel sorry for the most are the children of obese parents..They don't really have a chance at not following in their parents footsteps. I know kids who's dinner is fast food, hamburger helper, or pizza every night..Seein a vegetable on the dinner plate would be a miracle. 8 year old boys with man****s, girls who get picked on horribly at elementary school for being 'fatties' ,that's what bothers me the most about fat people, when they do this to their kids.
Anyway..I don't think the obesity problem will ever get better, actually i think it will only get worse..They have to want to change their lifestyle, and I would say that's one of the hardest things to do.

Of course, I think a lot of our problem is sticking our business in someone else's... so I agree with bridget in that there's not much that we can do.
The gubmint talks about taxing fat people more because they are a drain on public resources, but I think that is rather offensive IMO... should we tax people of certain race because they commit more crimes in the area? should we tax people of certain gender because they require more time off from work for certain gender issues?
Taxing fast food more... I think this too is rather disgusting. Yes, the stated goal is to regulate behavior, but it looks like just another attempt to grab more revenue through public grandstanding (which was what irked me most about Mayor Gavin Newsom's attempt to "legalize" gay marriage. That ass set back the cause of gay marriage about 50 years through his grandstanding instead of helping move a reasonable change of law throuh Sacto).
Anyway, I just impact what I can in my own small sphere... I work out, I encourage my wife to live a healthy lifestyle, and I will teach my kid(s, God willing) to live a healthy life.
I guess I am a Classical Liberal/Laissez Faire thinker when it comes to matters of fatassery.

I saw all of my older sibling's friends get fat when they went to college, and I vowed to not become like them. I lost 15 instead of gaining it. It's pretty easy to lose weight in college since you're walking around everywhere, and if you can avoid sh!tty beer and chips. If you go to any university in the top 100 they certainly have a state of the art gym. Use it.

I think that is the core of the issue here. Being obese, gay, have criminal tendancies, lazy.. all are behavioral issues. Our culture likes to blur the line between being a woman, or black and compare them to being fat, or gay. It doesn't wash. Being a black is not a behavioral condition. Being gay is. Being straight is as well. The government should keep out of the business of trying to regulate behavior. Our culture is what decides what behavior is acceptable and what is not.
That is the rub here. CJ's button got pushed because this thread seemed focused on picking on easy targets. But, at the same time, some hard love is in order here. I am not condoning the cheap shots that we started with, but sending a message as a society that obesity is a result of our own actions and tolerance. Fast food, instant gratification, faster downloads, pizza delivery, etc.... we need to balance that out somehow. Obesity is not acceptable and we need to say that outloud.

Well, that obesity is some kind of illness is true of course, it has something to do with genetics. But than, I think I've got all the genetic marks to be fat, because of generations before me. That's why I think It's mostly just a matter of how you live your life, and not give up to your weaknessess and make lame excusess, which are the biggest threat. I really think it's a matter of what's in your head than what's around your stomach. Warpig mentioned the people that go to a mailbox in their car, it clearly resembles my dad when he goes, by car for a newspaper to an agent that's 100m from his house. Now he has diabetes type B (thank you Coke) and only because he has low-sugar, low-carbohydrate diet he manage to drop some of the weight and did not have some kind of heart attack. What do we do about it? Nothing, we can only hope that people who are fat will comeback to the good path. Also I think that obestity should not get general acceptance, because there's nothing good about it.
And Bridget, what you wrote about 8 year old with severe obesity and man****s is not disgusting, it's just goddamn sad. Uh and with cigarettes, it's the same system here, I'm a general non-smoker but there's something with alcohol that sometimes makes me want a smoke. I always regret it afterwards.

Governments are moving towards the taxation method of regulating fat people's fatness, and I just wonder how effective such forms of behavior regulation would be...
I'm just kind of skeptical about using taxation as a means of regulation.

...
As for McD's inside US hospitals, it is a source of fixed operating revenue
(rent)... since US hospitals aren't state-funded & often operate at a loss these days, it's almost necessary for them to outsource cafeteria staff & collect rent in this fashion.
I really don't have a problem with McDonald's... it's the kind of people who eat their food too often that have issues.

Disgusting...more people actually get sick from bacteria on unwashed fruits and vegetables than from undercooked meat..I am a freak when in comes to washing produce..also ice is one of the dirtiest 'foods' in a restaraunt..I about barf when i see people scoop out ice with a cup in a ice bin instead of having it come out of a dispenser..These people probably just wiped their disgusting asses, didnt wash their hands, now they're touching your ice....friggin gross . Most of the time I order my drinks without ice...or just play it safe and order a bottled Coors Light..no poop germs there:)
OCd germophobe! those germs are your friends! haven't you ever seen south park's "Mr. Hankey" (a talking piece of 'poo')?

Damn dude, that makes a lot of sense. Anyway, I just wanted to take a moment and apologize to anyone I offended as I really didn't intend for the thread to go as far as it did, but that was the risk I took for venting. Anyway, sorry everybody.

I wish all your relatives could read what some of you have to say, because odds are they aren't in perfect shape.
I remember on another forum some young guy shot his mouth off about overweight people then 2 months later posted a picture of him and his mother... she was overweight.
When I quoted some of his comments back to him he got hostile. His words not mine. Think about who all you are passing judgement on when you run off at the mouth.

Generally, I think many people like to build themselves up by tearing others down. Even more so on the Internet because they get to hide behind their monitors.
A truely great Jerry Springer episode would be to call some of their family and friends into a studio and read back some of their verbal diarrhea from the Internet.

Had some conversation as of late that made me think of this thread. We all step on our own ****s from time to time. This has been one of those times. As I find myself more active in the threads but less active as a mod.. I've noticed how easy it is to fall into the typical ruts we all do when it comes to issues that hit close to home. So many of us get wound up when our soldiers are dishonored, or when our beliefs and values are questioned, or when debate becomes personal. That is when we start talking out of our asses.
On this forum I have likened homo******s to pedophiles, blamed culture/race/ethnicity for the wrongs in the world, defended ****ty politics, and bashed political parties based on the actions of a few. Heck this thread alone I managed to lump being fat and being gay together as if it were simply a matter of changing your habits. This is what happens when your view of things is clouded by your personal issues.
CJ hit the nail right on the head when he posted the ass chewings he did. I for one am glad this whole thread came about. I see the stupidity in the way we tend to think and the complete idiocy of finding comfort in complaining about it. Our culture definately has a lot of issues with weight. And I still beleive a stronger stance on the way we treat it is important.. but pointing the finger is just scapegoating the problem. I know where many of you come from.. seeing the physical manifestation of a life lived in excess and complete disregard for ones self can be very angering. But at the same time, lazy, disgusting people are also skinny people too. We seemed to have forgottent o complain about those people for some reason. Our psyche is built to regect images of fat people.
My frustration and anger lies in my personal relationships. Like I mentioned, my father and brother are genetically "big boys" while my mom and I were designed very skinny. Guess what? My mother and I are not skinny any longer. My wife and I both have lived youth as slender, healthy, carefree people. Today, we are having to monitor what we eat, work out, and try to find the motivation to not quit. It ****ing sucks!! I am not overweight by any means, but I could find myself there in the blink of an eye. I can't imagin how hard it must be for my father and brother to buckle down and try to lose weight. Not from the physical aspect but simply motivational. I look at those 10-15 lbs I want to lose so I can get down to "fighting" weight and get frustrated. What happens if you have to lose 50 or 100? It must be completely overwhelming. Then I think about their health. If I am feeling my age and the extra weight myself..then I know their bodies must be in some trouble as well. More reason for me to get ****ty about the whole fat guy thing. My wife is struggling with her weight and it must really get disheartening for her. Yet, I found reason to complain and poke fun at other people. Then tried to justify it because my family struggles with it and it pisses me off. Bull****. I don't know the calorie count.. but as of right now.. my foot is in my mouth. Not just on this issue, but for some real hippocritcal moments in my life thus far.
Skinny, fat, black, white, male, female, liberal, conservative, gay, straight, christian, muslim.. or whatever culture or nation you are from.. take a hard look in the mirror. Then ask yourself if you are full of ****. Ask yourself how honest you are with yourself.

15 Pounds: Part of Freshman Meal Plan?
By NATASHA SINGER
AT Terra Ve, a vegetarian cafeteria at Purchase College in Westchester County, N.Y., the bacon pizza is vegan, the Asian rice is low fat, and a big poster next to the French fry station extols the virtues of zero trans fat soy oil.
“It was kind of healthy and surprisingly good,” said Daniel Abillama, 19, a freshman from Southampton, N.Y., of the stuffed broccoli pizza he had for lunch last Monday. “Luckily, we are too poor for dessert.”
Justin Hoffman of Manorville, N.Y., who was also only three days into his college career at Purchase College, part of the State University of New York (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/s/state_university_of_new_york/index.html?inline=nyt-org), was also thinking about the inches that college dining might add to his waistline.
“I am worried because 15 pounds would show on me,” said Mr. Hoffman, 17. “That’s why I haven’t eaten much in the last couple of days.”
At this time of year, as students move into dorm rooms laden with comforters from Target, stacking shelves from Ikea, iPods and PowerBooks, they also take with them a host of worries about making friends, getting good grades and living on their own. But, for many, a foremost concern is what they will eat and whether they will experience the dreaded double-digit weight gain known as the “freshman 15.”
One of the earliest references to this affliction appeared in The Chicago Tribune in 1985, and it has since become a standard part of college lore, especially among young women. What is college, after all, but unlimited access to all-you-can-eat buffet-style dining halls with prepaid meal cards, late-night partying or studying fueled by high-fat snacks, and gossip sessions with roommates served up with a side of ice cream?
But the freshman 15 may turn out to be the Loch Ness monster of campus life — a much-reported phenomenon with little documentation behind it.
College weight fluctuation is a relatively new field of study. And because most of the published research on the topic involves only small groups of students on individual campuses, researchers do not know what percentage of the college population experiences weight changes, or even whether such changes are temporary or lead to long-term health consequences, said Daniel J. Hoffman, an assistant professor of nutritional sciences at Rutgers University (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/r/rutgers_the_state_university/index.html?inline=nyt-org) in New Brunswick, N.J..
“The ‘freshman 15’ is a catchy phrase,” Dr. Hoffman said. “Nobody would pay attention to the ‘freshman 5,’ and the ‘freshman 50’ is unrealistic.” But in a study of weight and body fat changes among 67 Rutgers freshmen, published last month in The Journal of American College Health, Dr. Hoffman found that 18 students lost weight, while 49 students gained an average of 7 pounds each. “Nobody gained 15 pounds.”
This has not stopped students from thinking about it.
“I guess some people go overboard with junk food,” said Nina Marie, 17, a Purchase freshman from Pelham, N.Y., who plans to work out six days a week as a member of the tennis team. “But I already know you shouldn’t eat in your dorm, you don’t snack, and you can’t eat burgers and fries every day,” she added, even as she downed a cheeseburger and fries.
But Ms. Marie had the right idea, some experts said. College should be about making wise choices and developing healthy eating habits. And that is where Daphne Oz, a junior at Princeton (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/p/princeton_university/index.html?inline=nyt-org) from Cliffside Park, N.J., comes in.
To help her peers navigate the Circean lures of college dining halls and late-night study breaks, Ms. Oz has written a book, “The Dorm Room Diet” (Newmarket Press), to be released on Sept. 6. The easy-to-read guide has a simple philosophy behind it: If students know nutrition basics, they will make healthier food choices.
Ms. Oz, 20, is the first to admit that she has no credentials in health or nutrition; her major is Near Eastern studies.
Her qualifications include the fact that her father is Dr. Mehmet C. Oz, a cardiac surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, who has taken her into his operating room to show her the fat-clogged arteries of his patients. And at the Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood, N.J., she wrote a high school research paper on teenage nutrition and lobbied for healthier cafeteria food, she said.
But what Ms. Oz lacks in credentials, she makes up for with a transformational story of a self-described former chubby girl made cute by laying off the cookie dough and laying on the cardio. While some of her classmates pigged out, she lost 10 pounds during her freshman year, she said. She did it by relying on vegetarian entrees and salads at her dining hall, snacking on grapes, nuts, baby carrots and semisweet chocolate bits, and eating high-fat foods and sweets only occasionally.
Ms. Oz’s own metamorphosis — from an unconscious consumer of white bread, bagels and “huge plates of pasta” to an alert eater who views food purely as fuel — forms the backbone of the book.
“If I give you the right information, and if I tell you my story as important, then anyone can make the transformation,” Ms. Oz said.
Her tips include avoiding sugar cereals and fried food; stocking dorm refrigerators with bite-size goodies like strawberries and baby carrots instead of Diet Coke and ice cream; filling up on fruit and water before attending parties; and preparing for study sessions by brown-bagging snacks like pears and soy crisps so that the midnight munchies won’t propel you to a vending machine.
“If I can get to you now, I can help you create healthy habits that will last the rest of your life,” Ms. Oz said.
For all its well-intentioned talk of good eating habits, however, the book does occasionally equate fat not only with unhealthiness but also with unattractiveness. The introduction, for example, starts off with a fable about a hypothetical student at “Fat U.,” whose chronic reliance on junk food results in a face full of dark circles, puffy eyes, zits and a belly “hanging over the pants that used to be your ‘fat jeans.’ ” Meanwhile a student at an imaginary “Fit U.,” who forgoes pizza and candy bars, has wide eyes, “not a blemish in sight,” and no trouble getting dressed in the morning because every outfit looks great.
“Sometimes with young people you have to play on their vanity,” said Ms. Oz, who described “The Dorm Room Diet” as a healthy eating plan and not an ode to thinness.
But Melody A. Graham, a professor of psychology at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, said that encouraging dieting could compound student anxiety. In a study of 44 freshmen on her campus, Dr. Graham found that those who started the year concerned about gaining weight were more likely to have negative body images and to overestimate their weight gain at the end of the year.
According to her study, “Freshman 15: Valid Theory or Harmful Myth?” published in 2002 in The Journal of American College Health, 26 of the students gained an average of 4.6 pounds, 16 students lost weight, and 2 students maintained their weight.
“There is a high correlation between concern over the mythical freshman 15 and poor body image at the end of the year,” Dr. Graham said.
Still, even if 15 is a mythical number, college weight gain could present a significant health issue, said Dr. Hoffman of Rutgers. All it took for the freshmen in his study to gain seven pounds over two semesters was about 112 extra calories a day, he said.
“That’s one commercial soda or half of a commercial cookie a day, or 10 minutes less of exercise,” Dr. Hoffman said.
And a few students do gain more than 15 pounds. Zoe Hall, Ms. Oz’s best friend from childhood, gained 20 pounds during her first year at Vanderbilt University (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/v/vanderbilt_university/index.html?inline=nyt-org) in Nashville because her class schedule conflicted with the opening hours of the university dining hall and she subsisted mostly on candy, frosted animal crackers, bagels and also late-night pizza delivered to her dorm room, she said.
“It’s a gradual weight gain that you only realize when your clothes don’t fit any more,” said Ms. Hall, 19, from Englewood Cliffs, N.J. Since she transferred last year to New York University (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/n/new_york_university/index.html?inline=nyt-org) where she eats at make-your-own-salad places, she has lost weight, she said.
Many campuses are already attuned to the idea that college eating can be habit forming. Purchase College, for example, where 35 percent of students identified themselves in a survey as vegetarians, has vegetarian options at each of its three cafeterias.
Chartwells Dining Services, which provides the food services at 230 college campuses, including Purchase, also maintains a Web site (dineoncampus.com/purchase/index.cfm (http://dineoncampus.com/purchase/index.cfm), for example) that lists the calorie and fat content of hundreds of foods, including McDonald’s hamburgers and Good Seasons Italian salad dressing. The site also helps students calculate their body mass index and the number of calories they naturally burn each day (dineoncampus.com/purchase/?cmd=Wellness (http://dineoncampus.com/purchase/?cmd=Wellness)).
Andrew Parker, a junior from Massapequa, N.Y., said he lost 20 pounds since coming to Purchase. In high school, he ate Pop-Tarts for breakfast, Chinese food or pizza for lunch, and ice cream after dinner, he said. Last Monday, Mr. Parker, a music performance major who plays the oboe, was lunching on a chicken sandwich and fruit salad.
“I have seen a lot of people coming home from freshman year who looked like they had gained more than 15 pounds,” Mr. Parker said. “I am eating a lot healthier.”
