i know this sounds rather stupid... but still - i need to know it.

(i guess this goes under: equipment and gear)

i just recieved my first shemagh (from blackhawk) and i would really like to know how to wear the bloody thing properly, so it covers the entire face but doesn't slip all the time.
anyone got instructions on this thing?

btw considering that thing cost me about 13 bucks and it is blackhawk, i'm not too impressed by the quality of it!

go to this website and then look under headgear, at the bottom you can click on a picture which will show you how to do it.

Here you can buy them in small arab stores for about 5$. Of course they are not even as tactical or modular as the Blackhawk shemaghs, but I think they come from the same place :-)

So far the only ones I've been able to find in Arab stores are either the black and white or red and white versions. The local surplus shops carry the green or tan "military" versions but of course they jack up the price to about $20.:-(

Get like 20, give one to me then sell the rest as tatical Arab head dresses on e-bay. (they go for like 10 bucks on ebay.)

There's several different ways in which to wear it, and most of the Iraqi's that I see DON'T wear them like the way pictured or portrayed at MM.

I used to wear mine like that, but wear it the "proper" so way they, keep telling me!!

Oh and I have local bought, Light tan,Green/Black,Green/Grey and the Black/White one.....all for $5 a pop

What are the advantages of wearing one as compared to a balaclava? I assume it's somewhat easier to fit in...any more?

The shemagh allows more air to flow through compared to the Balaklava.

It's basically just a big sheet, so you can use it for whatever a big sheet can be used for. Cover your head, face, neck, use as a sunshield, admin area for weapon cleaning etc...

Most armies (esp British) will look at you a little odd if you wander around with a balaclava on anyway. Shame, considering they were named after a famous British battle.

Irish place in the battle, right?

Argyll, how does one wear it properly?

Not Irish mate (although current connotations are of certain Irish groups). The battle of Balaclava was during the crimean war (25th October 1854, IIRC). It was a defining moment of the british army, despite being a defeat, due to the courage of the regiments fighting there. The charge of the heavy brigade, the thin red line and the charge of the light brigade are integral to the history of the british army.

The actual item of clothing was of a style that was made for the troops by the women at home and shipped out to them to face the russian winter.

There's this (http://www.actiongear.com/agcatalog/shemagh.html) way but I prefer to wear mine the way described before.

Basically... ...it's still a big sheet. Just wrap/tie it any way you want to.

Haha the way that guy is wearing it is too funny. Please don't wear it like that.

I will put mine on and take a picture.
