Well finally after I got some free time, I decided to make an SVD
Since i have 2 on my table here at home, I thought why not give it a try.
So I will be posting progress as I go.
Modeling was pretty hard. My friend who is one hell of a modeler was helping me with a butstock and a few other parts.
Im not an organic modeler, so I needed help. But im texturing the whole thing myself, and finishing the rest of the model.
So here is the progress so far

The real thing on my kitchen table for reference

My friend modeled the buttstock with the cheek rest, and I modeled the reciever as he was finishing it up

http://img468.imageshack.us/img468/405/svd6ry9.jpg
http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/5687/svd9pg9.jpg
Here i started texturing the reciever

guards and the gas port is ready
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/4421/svd16yc3.jpg
started texturing the buttstock
THIS THING TOOK A WHILE, and some sweat.
All the highlights are done withing the engine, so as you move the rifle or the light around it, you will see the highlights move around shiny surfaces.
More to come soon

That is some of the best 3D Modeling i've ever seen.
So are you still moving to Seattle? If so, where are you gonna work at?

Dude, that is very cool, really excelent work. I wish that I could manipulate a computer like that, it would make designing and engineering my furniture sooo much easier. I'm still using a f*cking drafting table, totally goddamned stone age. I cant wait to see your finished product.
Just out of curiosity, what program do you use?

What do you use for the skinning? Photoshop? I don't see a stylus and pad anywhere, do you skin with a mouse?

You'r one lucky bastard if you get the job. It's one the best dev groups in the world (they realy treat games as art) not mention they have their own publishing company giving them 100% freedom.

I am not amused. You must post photos of you standing on your head, in a vat of ice cream, wearing Cali Joes tarzan g-string using your computer, then I shall nod my head and say yes... impressed I am.

quick update
finished the top cover, magazine, and started on the hand guards
The top cover was a pain in the butt to texture. Because it has a lot of smooth corners and parts. So matching UVs (texture coordinates) took me a day

Wow, Roman. You got a serious talent with this stuff. Although I finished the University for Arts and Design a few years back, I never got into 3D modelling. But I am pretty good at hand drawing atleast.

Fantastic work Roman...SVD Dragunov is one of my favorite rifles...
I just wanted to ask, what is your reference material besides that SVD on your desk? Any blueprints or something similar?
BTW, can you advise me a good 3DSM site to start with?

Thank you
I basically took the Dragunov i have, and made templates for it. Took careful photos with 200 mm lens from all the sides.
Reason I used 200mm lens was so I can avoid distortion of the lens. Anything lower, lets say at 35mm you would have bending corners. At 200mm i have a direct zoom on it.
I take a side shot of the buttstock, reciever/top cover, handguards, barrel. And basically take all the sides of the rifle. Than i make a modeling template out of the parts.
It takes a while to do all that hehehe.
A good site to start would be http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/sv_home.php
