BUD/s helmet question

What is the meaning of the stripe's in front of the helmet during BUD/s training?
I see helmets with no stripe's,one stripes or two stripes in front of the helmet.
Does it mean the recruit is a first timer,second timer and so on?

Nope. If you are a Petty Officer 1st class (E6), you get 3 chevron stripes. A PO 2nd class (E5) gets, 2 chevron stripes. A PO 3rd class (E4) gets 1 chevron stripe. Officers get a vertical stripe in conjunction with their rank. Ensigns (O-1) and Lt. JG (O-2) both get a single vertical stripe. Seamen and Seamen apprentices don't get a stripe on their helmet.

Doc, when do they lose the helmets? Or do they wear 'em for the entire training period until Hell Week?

Actually, they continue to keep their helmets through second phase and all the way until third phase and the completion of BUD/s. Second phase brings a a new paint job: blue. Third phase they are painted again but this time red.

Glenn, have you recently watched the documentary on the Military Channel about class 234? I know it was on last week. If I recall reading, 3 men from class 234 have been KIA. I haven't been able to confirm this anywhere, so I can't say 100%.

Let me retract my statement. I've done some digging and I can't find anything on it. I wish I knew where I heard/saw it before. Maybe someone here has heard the same thing and knows where to look. I hope that I am wrong about this.
