View Full Version : Speaking of new CIA movie - who would you cast?

Okay, I'm going to go into "fan boy"-mode for a while. After seeing the thread about the new CIA movie The Good Shepherd (apparently starring Leo DiCaprio) the thought struck me - who would be some good actors to play spooks?
Now, Colin Farrel's name was brought up in the other thread due to his part in The Recruit. I didn't particularly care for that movie, and I don't know what the official CIA stance might be in regards to heavily tattooed people, but... In the end I didn't buy him in that role (outstanding work in Tigerland though!)
Anyway, here's a list of actors I think would look good playing Mr Secret Agent Man:
Fred Ward
Stanley Tucci
Robert DeNiro (of course)
James Gandolfini (around the time of True Romance)
Gene Hackman (has played one several times)
Frank John Hughes
Matthew Settle
Loren Dean
Dale Dye
Robin Williams (I'm not ****tin' ya!)
I really wanted to come up with a list of older actors, but a few younger ones made their way onto the list too. For some reason I just like the idea of seeing older men in saggy suits rather than young ones wearing Versace. Kinda like the final shoot-out in The Way of the Gun, where all the bad guys are older men, or in Bullit where the hitmen are two older worn out-looking guys who look like they're in their 50's.

The Recruit and Spy Game hinted at the lying, cheating, and stealing that goes into spying. I'd like to see a movie where the spy doesn't
look like a movie star (ex. Colin Ferrell/Brad Pitt) and he actually recruits/handles sources while undercover.
Gotta get back to work so throw this pick out:
Edward Norton

The Recruit and Spy Game hinted at the lying, cheating, and stealing that goes into spying.Very true - Spy Game did a better job at that than The Recruit though. The Recruit was basicly just a whodunnit about greed, but in a more exotic setting. The parts about East German defectors in Spy Game was (to me) much more realistic.
I'd like to see a movie where the spy doesn't look like a movie star (ex. Colin Ferrell/Brad Pitt) and he actually recruits/handles sources while undercover. My point exactly.
Edward NortonI'd buy that.

I thought this movie was actually very realistic in depicting teenage life in the CIA. And I should know, I have been working for the Agency in several highly classified missions since they held a recruiting drive at my preschool in 1986. I'm not supposed to reveal the tricks of the trade I learned from my stint in the late 80's, but you would be amazed how efficiently an Easy Bake Oven can be converted into a highly explosive IED.

I like Tributal's suggestion of Robin Williams. Robin Williams of "Good Will Hunting," the dress, the beard, the wisdom; just some thoughts...

Robin Williams is a good one.
Whoever it is, they should look average and unremarkable.

Jean Reno.
I know he's French, but besides that tiny little detail, he's perfect!

Reno wouldn't be too bad for a French agent. Tom Hanks would be pretty good at a 'quiet' agent role IMO.

I'm a big Ed Harris fan. I'm gonna have to go with him.... if I can't have Tane in the role. ;)

i kno this is a bit off topic but i thought Sir Alec Guiness in Smiley's People and tinker, tailor, soldier, spy was pretty good.....besides in smiley's people Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard for u non trekkies)did a cameo as the russian spy master Karla! Also Diane Keaton in the little drummer girl. All three of which were based on John le Carre novels and he is probably the best spy novellist of all time. (apologies to ian flemming, tom clancy, robert ludlum, and john forsythe fans!) :D
Back on topic Ed Norton would be a great choice, how about Kevin Spacey (aka Verbal Kint/Kaiser Sosay) from the usual suspects? I think he would be a great spy he is the perfect 'Gray' Man
I like the Ed Harris suggestion to.

Don't I know it! ;) That's what would make you perfect in the role.... the ultimate SAM. p-) I guess I'll have to go with my second choice.... Ed Harris it is.... :D

How bout Tom Cruz? He did play a pretty good role of a spook for IMF which was suppose to be part of the CIA in Mission Impossible.

I agree on John le Carre, and Graham Green.

Ed Harris should've been on my list too. Damn, don't you hate it when you forget the obvious ones? ;)
The reason I included Robin Williams is because when you dope him up with enough Ritalin [sp?] and he calms down he can play some very dark unlikeable characters. Did anyone else catch him in Insomnia? Also, he has that plain kind of look about him these days, just like someone pointed out about his look in Good Will Hunting.
Jean Reno is always good for spook parts, though I love him as The Great Enzo! :D

Yeah, you ever seen his part in "The Secret Agent"? He plays this Professor guy, very depressed, very dark. Never shows humor in the entire film. Near the end he blows himself up in a crowd. Was quite a different performance than he usually gives.

I'll give it a try if I ever see it around. He was fairly creepy in One Hour Photo as well.

He's actually credited with a lot of smaller roles:
Goon #1 in an 'A-Team' episode is probably his most memorable. p-)

I was gonna post a topic about this, but I figured I'll just post a message here. If they ever had to make a splinter cell movie, George Clooney would be absolutely perfect for that role, I was watching him in "3 kings", I gotta tell you he has Sam Fisher written on his forehead.

I would only watch it if his voice was still dubbed by Michael Ironside. :P

OK, how about Russell Crowe?
After all, he has played:
1. A LAPD policeman who beat up and blow away bad guys savagely
2. A gladiator who beat up and blow away bad guys savagely
3. A hostage negotiator who beat up and blow away bad guys savagely
4. A Nelsonian sea captaion who beat up and blow away bad guys savagely
So why not a CIA agent who beat up and blow away bad guys savagely?
I want a movie about the CIA that isn't all guns and action, for once. Something that profiles the intelligence business for what it is. James Bond is great, but it's not reality.

They reckon counter intel work is mostly mundane and fairly often boring with brief scary moments. Most good used car salemen would make great agent recruiters lets face it they can talk most into buying a car that we either cannot afford or that is worth a fraction of what we are paying for it.
