ANONYMOUS WARRIORS (of The Unknown Warrior Association 333)
IN THE YEAR 1961 while Laos was facing a very critical internal political conflict, communist bloc took opportunity to send forces from North Vietnam for military operations in Laos in the name of “Laotian Patriot Militia” or “Naew Lao Hak Sad” as spearhead for offensive attack into the Kingdom of Laos. The offensive attack operations were backed up by the Main China and Russia with high powered weapon aids such as 130 mm artillery, 122 mm ground-to-ground launcher, PT-76 tank & T-34 tank and a large number of logistic vehicles, etc. targeting to seize the Kingdom of Thailand as main as well as whole states in the Indo-china region. The United States of America, though being engaged in military action against communism in Vietnam at that time, however decided to hand out assistance to Laos, later the Laotian Govt. also called Thailand’s Govt. for assistance on resisting, intercepting and limiting the extent of such communist’s military action for its influence expansion. Meanwhile, Thailand was also effected the same from such incursion and the Thai Govt. could foresee the need to stop the communist’s military action anywhere outside the Kingdom of Thailand as our best defensive strategy so we finally agreed to assist Laotian authority by setting up “Joint Forces Command 333” or “HQ 333” as our “Field Operation Unit” to join the resistance missions with “SKY Unit” as assigned and supported by the United States of America.
The Joint Forces Command 333 then began to form Special Task Forces consisting of volunteers deployed in action in these following operational areas:
RATIKUL SPECIAL TASK FORCE : Assigned to defend the northern part of Laos
especially the area of Xienglom District as main V.P. SPECIAL TASK FORCE : Central part of Laos mainly in the area of Samthong
and Longtien with the assignment to defend Vientian
and any further progressive attack into northeastern
of Thailand
PHASOUK SPECIAL TASK FORCE : Assigned to defend southern of Loas over the
area of Champasak, Attapu & Bolaven Highland
Page 2
PARATROOP POLICE UNIT : Assigned to train for special guerilla warfare personnel
(Police Aerial Reinforcement Unit)
FIRE FLY UNIT : T-28 bomber squadrons to support our ground combatant units
WHITE HORSE UNIT : Gun-ship helicopters to support the ground operation units
S.R. UNIT : To supervise operations for security keeping on important areas
B.I. & B.A. UNIT : Assigned for defense actions on strategic areas
During the year 1969 – 1973 the communist bloc had increased deployment of force over 60,000 men to attack simultaneously in all parts of Laos with the support of heavy weapons and tanks continually and harshly until warfare competency of our force obviously dwindled, the enemy opened attacks during close weather while all air-crafts were unable to support our ground operations at all. We therefore had to adjust our warfare tactics by doing counter-attacks at night as well as air raids whenever chance favored us to do so, in addition our strategy also transfigured to guerilla warfare and turned the disadvantageous situation upside to be on offensive until we were able to push the enemy out and seized to occupy stronghold in many areas - the enemy retreated to get a right stand in the central part at the edge of upper Land De Jars and Xieng Kwang District thereby.
Eventually, our assigned missions to intercept the communist threat not to spread out of our neighboring country into the Kingdom of Thailand were completely achieved to the goal and intent of high level commanders and our Unknown Warrior 333
fellows as well, the Communist bloc failed to seize Thailand as per their “Domino Theory Plan”. According to 214 Unknown Warriors who had been caught as POWs by the enemy during missions but later got released and returned to their homeland in September, 1973 gave their oral statement based on the same ground that the Communist bloc had proclaimed the goal to dominate Thailand within the year 1977 but anyhow their mischievous plan was unable to succeed. So, it is not exaggerating to say
Page 3
that the Unknown Warriors’ long operation from the year 1961 to 1974 with the aim to protect our nation from such communist threat was deemed to be a great success.
However, the history of our Unknown Warriors 333 Volunteers, consisting of Ex. personnel of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, Police and civilians in this secret warfare of which its savage and brutality was not second to any other war, is still unaware of to the public but merely known inside military personnel circle and it may fade away or be forgotten from memory or perhaps our next generations may have no chance to acknowledge the good typical deed of patriotism of one who can sacrifice even his life to protect the nation, religion, the most beloved monarchy institution, and our democracy under constitutional monarchy. By the way, casualties of the Unknown Warriors 333 in the battlefield as per official record is 3,744 men in all; 1,944 KIAs, 1,047 cripples, 538 MIAs and 215 POWs (214 men retrieved and repatriated home). From the total number of 30,000 men deployed in this military operation the casualties percentage rose to 13.1 (the loss figure obtained from record during operation period from January, 1971 to April, 1974) which is regarded as one of external warfare with most tremendous ever troop in Thailand’s history. Yet, our secret operation in Laos was somehow kept as a very confidential for the past 3 decades until some Ex. commanding officers say “Make your mind ! It looks as if you stick pieces of gold leaf under the Buddha image so there is no way to see it though walking around and around”.
At present, Gen. Pichitr Kulavanich has given his continual support until our Unknown Warrior Association 333 established and he is also very kind enough to take the post of Chairman of Advisory Panel, whilst ACM Gunn Pimanthip is Honorary Chairman of Advisory Panel, and Gen. Chaturith Promsakha Na Sakolnakorn being President of the Association of which main objectives emphasize on publicizing heroic acts of the Unknown Warriors of all corps and in every operational areas during the war
to our descendant generations to be aware of such typical patriotism, self-dedication to

protect religion and monarchy institution which is the most beloved to all Thai people, as well as our plan to construct a war memorial or monument in honor of all late heroes who sacrificed their lives during operations in the savage war, where photos and other things relating to this historic warfare can be displayed for our youths and next generations to get aware of and be stimulated as to patriotism, self-dedication to protect religion and our monarchy institution like whatever the Unknown Warriors did in the past, especially at present situation that our nation is knowingly in need of “sympathy & unity” among all Thai people.
