A buddy of mine was in the RLI, one day I was watching a show on professional soldiers, and there he was walking across an airfield near a civilian aircraft downed by an RPG.

Never was able to find that video again.

These pics make me wonder again what percent of elite units would actually keep their hair short and clean shaven if it wasn't regs. Or for that matter what percent of regular units.

"Who likes the short shorts? We like the short shorts!"...but seriously, these guys were pretty formidable...and I had always thought there was 100% white too, so it interesting to see some pictures of African members.

Alot of these guys might be RLI.

Selous Scouts were a mixed unit. Sometimes units would be entirely black. Sometimes with white members.

One of the missions of the Selous Souts was to penetrate enemy formations, sometimes for direct action, sometimes for intel.

My buddy told me a story about his RLI unit opening up on a group of Terrs at one point. When the dust settled, and the bodies were being picked over for intell, an officer recognized one of the dead men.

Turns out they had been a Selous Scout unit out on a mission in the area, and due to some fubar situation this RLI unit didn't know it.

He said everyone in the unit felt absolutely crappy about it for awhile. Fratricide is no fun.

The majority of these photos are 'posed' for the press or are just other units.

The Rhodesian military had a easy start to the war. it was a Rhodie 'thing' to wear Nut cracker shorts in the early 70ies. After about 75 when the war took off then to 'normal' units always wore full cammo. Each unit had its own SOP. i.e. The RAR always had two grenades on their webbing one HE and one smoke . They normally wore their uniform as issued.

The RLI had a far laxer dress regulation on patrol or on fireforce duties. They also got full cammo coveralls on fireforce .

The Selous Scouts on true anti - terrorist ops wore the same clothing as the terrorists. Often taken from newly killed terrorists as the terrorists knew that the selous scouts did this and the whole cat and mouse game went on and on.

The Selous scouts on big external raids wore the same uniform as the troops in the country they were attacking- to sow confusion and give them that extra few seconds to breake contact.

On reccys they wore full Rhodie cammo as it is very good in theat part of the world.

The SAS would deploy to a staging HQ wearing full Rhodesian uniform. Once there they too would don the uniform of the country they were going into. Their CO was a very superb and was Mr OPSEC. So after every op they would return back to the staging HQ wash shave and put back on their Rhodie cam.

On one Op they came back in washed shaved got into clean uniform to be told "in true mil tradition" that they were going back out in 2 hours "So get back into your ops kit".
