What was this event all about, anyway?
Sort of like the crap we went through with AIM, back in the 1970s?

i was far to young to real give a rats ass about this. But the general formula for the oka crisis goes like this. Native land rights + Golf Course plans + some idiot named Lasagna = a big stand offish mess. Heres some links. The CBC link is probably the better of the two.

We had a similar crisis in january 2004 altough less violent. I can dig more information if you want.
Basically, natives encercled a police center and didn't want the cops to leave the building. IIRC, the new cops we're there on the order of James Gabriel, an officer who wanted to stop the criminality in the reserve. They burned his house and he had to leave the reserve.
Politicians we're really sucky, basically they did nothing because they we're native. **** them, the law is the same for everybody, if I block the access to a police center in montreal, they will come and kick my ass. The same should arrive for those bastards.

Then there was the Burnt Church fiasco over lobster rights. That was a good fight because it envolved a mini naval battle between Fisheries officers and Miq'mac "warriors" in New brunswick. One of the Miq'mac boats got run over by the fisheries boat.
Cheers,

The main thing is that they were pissed that the govt was going to be able to quash their illegal cigarette smuggling into canada (of cheap us smokes)... they made hundreds of thousands a year from that.

There have also been the Gustafsen Lake Standoff (summer 1995) and the Ipperwash park occupation (fall 1995) and the Northwest Rebelion (1885).

We watched a video on aboriginal rights in my Canadian Social Problems class and it showed clips from the Oka Crisis and it sparked my curiosity.

Why don't you guys (Canadians) just give them loads of whisky. Worked down here in America. We don't have so many problems with the Red Men, anymore. 'Course, If -I- was stuck out in some godforsaken gravel pit, choking down a quart of Old Crow for breakfast, with no job....I probably wouldnt breed either...

The reason you guys dont have problems wit hthem is cus they all live in reserves in the middle of nowhere.
In Canada we didnt kill whole tribes. (No offence). We just forced them to become christians. Thats still pretty bad.
MY family is part metis, and i find your words somewhat offensive.

Evan,
not trying to bash them. It's a classic problem when one civilization gets stomped by another and absorbed, but NOT assimilated. Look at the Hawai'ians, Maori, Anu(in Japan), as well as the Indios in Mexico. Unemployment, because they won't/dont/cant educate themselve (in Hawaii, many natives drop out of middle school, nevermind High School), isolation from the larger culture, added to booze and drugs. Result: the population plummets.
Those who -do- assimilate, usually seperate themselves from the Native Culture, and go off into the world. This leaves the remainder on the Res/Trailer Park without clear guidance/role models. It rapidly becomes a viscious circle.
Nobody is out to get them, they simply arent adapting too well, as a group.

MikeWell no i totally agree with you with that. They dont bother assimilating themselves into society half the time. I just thought that your give them whiskey comment was a little un-called for.

And if you really look at it the Navajo Nation is dry from my recollections.

Probably homeless. Crazies like that always end up walking the streets.
