Okay, I think it's about time to show a few things from my SIG collection. They are all swiss made and in pretty good condition. So let's go.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g1.jpg
The SIG Stgw 57, service rifle of the swiss armed forces from 1957 to 1990. The cartridge is 7.5mm GP11 (special swiss ammo. Pretty heavy bastard, but very reliable and the calibre is great.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g5.jpg
The new service assault rifle SIG Stgw 90 (SIG 550). Cartridge is 5.56mm GP90 (Gewehrpatrone 90). Damn accurate, but not as reliable as the Stgw 57, but then again it's 3kg lighter and manufactured with newest technologies. The barrel is one of the best parts of the rifle. Very heavy and accurate allows good an precise shooting on 350 yards combined with the great iron sights.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g3.jpg
The SIG Mosquito .22lr is a training pistol. Functions are the same as other SIG pistols, but it's a little bit smaller.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g4.jpg
The SIG 228 and the SIG 229 (top). The 228 is still service pistol of many police corps, the 229 has a heavier slide and often fires other calibres (as the shown one in .357 sig with extra barrel for .40 S&W)
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g2.jpg
The SIG 551 SWAT is one of the best rifles of the SIG series. More compact than the 550 but still with the power of an assault rifle. Here my "pimped" version with Trijicon ACOG, Surefire X200, Vertical Grip and Cheek plate. Fielded as Stgw 90 kurz. Some special units like the Infantry Grenadiers or the Para Recon Company 17 are using them.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g6.jpg
Here you see the SIG 220 and the SIG 226 (top). Both excellent and reliable pistols in 9mm. The SIG 220 is fielded as Pist 75 in the swiss armed forces, has only a single row magazine and the magazine catch is at the end of the pistol grip. The 226 is in use by many military units all over the globe and was the old swiss police gun. It has a double row magazine and the magazine catch can by used by the same hand holding the pistol grip.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g7.jpg
Here you see the size of a SIG 552 Commando compared to the size of a short Bushmaster Carbine and a standart MP5 by Heckler & Koch. The 552 is very compact and still brings a lot of power for his size, but of course it's not a assault rifle for the long range. Also with the different gas tube it's not so reliable as the 550/551.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g8.jpg
Here we go with the standart service rifle, a few items attached for shooting on 350 yards.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g9.jpg
The famous SIG 210 (fielded as Pist 49) is very accurate and you still hit targets at 50m. It has a single row magazine and the magazine catch is at the bottom of the pistol grip (like the SIG 220). The SIG 210 is still used by precisision shooters because of it's performance.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g10.jpg
The SIG 551 SWAT naked. Very reliable, good power, heavy barrel and excellent sights.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g11.jpg
The Service Rifle 1957 / Stgw 57 is a heavy piece of gear, but in 1957 was on the list of the best assault rifles.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g12.jpg
The SIG 552 commando with EoTech Holosight.
http://www.brezel.org/feuerfrei/g13.jpg
The SIG 232 is a compact gun in .380 auto (9mm kurz) with a fixed barrel.
I wanted to add, that all these guns are complety legal in Switzerland and you're allowed to shoot them on the range. They are all semi automatic (except for the SIG 550, which is my service rifle). I hope you enjoyed the litttle tour. Collecting SIG firearms is a part of my collection,

That's true. The standart trigger (doesn't need modification) is very well made. You feel exactly the pressure point (like a sniper rifle trigger) and you have great trigger control. Doesn't matter on short distances, but on 350 yards you still hit great with a standart issued rifle. Also a big plus is the sights.

They are the best forward grip made. It has a great feel to it and it is ultra rigid. The testing had a TangoDown VFG bend a KAC M5 RAS under pressure.
It is made to the exact Picatinny 1913 rail standard.
Check out Tangodown.com.
The TD VFG will be standard iteom on FN SCAR and also it is featured on the HK M416.
You know. I wish I did not sell my SG551. I really thing that is one of the best assault rifle ever made. You are one lucky guy.

Okay, I will see if I can order one from the states.
Indeed, SIG 551 is one of the best rifles. Very accurate and reliable. Only minus is the magazine which you have to clip in (like AK47) and not only push in (like G36). But still my favorite weapon.

Enough firepower for a decent war. SIG is only a part of my collection. I'm collecting mainly Western countries assault rifle (collection is nearly complete). I am lucky, because in Switzerland we have a large civil market. So you get most of the western assault rifles also in semi auto. If youw anted you can ask for a collectors permit for full-auto rifles, but I just shoot a bunch of them (mainly service weapons) and so it's not worth the effort.

Depends on the condition.
List price in shops for a SIG 551 SWAT is CHF 2950.- , normal SIG 551 is about CHF 2750.- (=2360$ for 551 SWAT/ 2250$ for 551). You can get them used in very good condition for 2000$ . Nowadays they sell mostly SIG 551 SWAT (black handguard/grip/stock and better protected against rust, was originally built for SOF and maritime units).

What can you say about reliability of 552? I heard it has some issues.
Also, how much 551 is longer than 552?
Thanks

Nope, it's semi auto, made for the swiss market. if I wanted I could get me a collectors license and collect full automats, but it's way to expensive and not worth the effort, because most of my stuff is just on display.

SIG 550 and 551 are pretty reliable. The gas piston/bolt looks a little bit like the one of a AK47, but it's manufactured very precise. If you can talk about problems with the bolt, it's because it's manufactured too precise and dirt getting in may cause problems after a while, but 550 and 551 are reliable. The 552 uses another design for the gas srping, it goes (because of the short gas tube) trough the bolt. The system is not that bad, but it's not as reliable as the 550 or 551, but I had less problems (when using good ammo too) than with the Bushmaster shown. So I think it's still reliable, but compared to 550 and 551 it lacks a little bit in it's performance, but then again: Hey look at the size, it's as big as a MP5.

but would you be allowed to fire the fully automatics at the shooting range without getting hassled all the time? (even if you do have a licence to collect them)

To hear that from one of the MP.net gun-pros is great :-) When I have a pool I let you know.
To the 552 with selective fire:
I've shoot it in the army too... great thing, that's true. But nowadays to expensive to buy here.
BTW: Shooting full auto on ranges is not a problem, remember: Every swiss citizen who did military service (and we do have a milicia army) has a full auto SIG SG550 at home, so there's a lot of people doing a burst or two at the range.

Good stuff! I love SIGS! My favorite handgun out there. I have a P228 that was a pain the a$$ to find, but I have had a few P226's in the past. Sig assault rifles seem really hard to come by here in the US.

The trigger pull is awesome. You feel the exact pressure point. And I never shot a swiss made SIG rifle without this trigger feeling. Maybe this comes from people who are not used to a smooth triggerpull.

I shoot the AR and the SIG rifles both very much (at least once a week), and both are great rifles. The AR is lighter and as ergonomic as the SIG, only minus is that the SIG is slightly more reliable and the sights are better than the standart sights of the AR. The big plus of the AR is the great modularity, the easy mag change and the weight.

now that you mention it, during instruction on a bit of urban training there was an excersize where you had to do a window entry with two guy using a wooden log to boost people into the window. So I was talking to the instructor about how useful that would be since you can really never find a strudy log in urban situations much less when you want to use one. (wasnt argueing, just trying to make conversation) Anyways, so he tells me that previously with the stgw57, they used the rifle instead of a log to boost people into the buildings and that when they switched to the SIG550 they bent a couple of SIG550's out of shape and people were saying it wasnt robust enough, some saying that it was garbage. I thought that was kinda funny when I heard it...
