I was curious as to whether or not the Flecktarn camo that the German army uses can be purchased? I was looking online for a pair of trousers in Flecktarn Desert pattern and was having trouble locating them. I could only find the woodland equivilent or in another country other than the US.

I know that they are sort of new and I'm aware that maybe they are only for official use only. please advise, anything would be helpful. cheers p-)

Thanks ublekuh, I did check b4 but to no avail.

It'll be pretty hard finding it any decent quantities outside of Europe. A piece or 2 would pop up here and there, but waiting for the right piece in the right size could take forever, and even then would more than likely be over-priced ... The best place to find foreign items, is in foreign lands.

eBay is your best bet, try the euro eBays aswell though ... eBay.fr, eBay.it, eBay.co.uk etc etc ... I've gotten a few sets for me and some mates off eBay, genuine surplus & cheap as chips. You just got to know how to look.

Don't just search for the term "Desert Flecktarn". Remember the majority of people selling current German surplus would probably be German people, so do some research and find out what THEY call it, in their native tongue, and take it from there.

Thanks for your help everyone, I will take the initiative from here on out and try and find it on my own.

One last question though, should I be looking for something authentic or a new and improved set of trousers. How can I differntiate between the two and what do you prefer?

Issue is the way to go. I've seen more of it, and it isn't that expensive.
Also with Issue gear, thought has gone into the design. There are no "new & improved" versions, atleast not from public manufacturers. If it's the current German issue gear, then it's good to go.

The repro's that you will find are your stock standard, run-of-the-mill BDU's, that you see at any camping store. All are identical in make, just a different pattern printed on.

Good Issue gear has had research put into it before it was manufactured. From things like Armpit Ventilation gaps (as with the German uniforms), to how it's stitched, down to the very fabric being used.

Differentiating between the 2 is pretty easy. First off, the Tag. If it's in English, it isn't Bundeswehr gear. Repro stuff is usually all the same. (Standard US BDU cut) 4 front pockets, button cuffs. That's it. The German gear has Ventilatoin Armpits, Press Studs instead of standard buttons, Small pocket on left arm, Velcro rank tabs on both shoulders.

Here's a link to the issue gear.

Flecktarn.co.uk's gear is good. It's brand new, and you can trust them 100% with your order. Only problem is they are rather pricey. If you want it new, and want it now, get it from them. If you are willing to wait a little while, you can find them online (eBay is best), for a better price. New or used.

They are based/ship out of Hong Kong. Never used them though, so I have no idea on their reliability/legitimacy.

Hong Kong, huh? That's why I didn't recognize the telephone prefix. ;) Hmm, methinks I'd prefer a German source for this stuff...will continue to look around. Thanks!

I'd say they're the same. Maybe it's just that the pattern is a bit different, just like any other uniform. It's like comparing two woodland BDUs, they'll also be a bit different.

One is used, one is new, that's all. Besides that it's not called desert flecktarn but Tropentarn (tropical camo).

You think so?
"Tropentarn" has never been an official designation as far as I know.
It's either 5-Farb-Tarndruck "Flecktarn" (five colours camouflage pattern, e.g. woodland-ish) or 3-Farb-Tarndruck "Wüstenflecktarn" (three colours camouflage pattern as for the desert equivalent). "Tropentarn" is no synonym for "Wüstenflecktarn".

Murmelmann

I thought that my Bekleidungsstammkarte said Tropentarn, could be only 3-Farb-Tarndruck.
But Wüstenflecktarn is most likely also not correct.
If you go to the Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung you see this picture http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/4663/1000435v.jpg as Wüstenflecktarn, this camo is sold by Sabre.

I'm not looking for a fight over those two words.

Neither am I, no hard feelings.

'Tropentarn' was mostly related to the brighter version of the 5-Farb-Tarndruck, which is more yellowish. It's also thinner than the regular Flecktarn.
Today, after the TL was changed, the usual flecktarn has the same color as the 'Tropentarn'.
