Both of them opened MRE's equally well, but the M7 was easier to clean.

During all my time in the Army I never once recalled having a discussion about the merits of bayonet design. They hung on your LBE and were just something to clean when you got back into garrison. The only time they were attached to our rifles was when we had a change of command ceremony or the Division Review.

I've no personal experience on this subject, but as I understand it, the M9 has a reputation for having very inconsistent build quality, since several different companies were contracted to manufacture them. Also, I'm pretty sure that the USMC never issued the M9 to replace the M7, and has instead recently started to issue the OKC-3S Multi-Purpose Bayonet as a replacement.

I agree with what leg said...I keep a S.O.G. SEAL pup mounted on my IBA because its easy to sharpen and keep and edge. the M9 blade itself is pretty worthless. its good for stabbing into someone, but as a knife its pretty subpar. we rarely even are issued the M9 when we go out to the field.

I was issued M7s in the Marine Corps and M9s in the National Guard, and never cared much for either. Most of us bought our own knives for daily use, as we never expected to participate in a bayonet charge or repulse waves of Dervishes or Zulus!

I have fixed Bayonets once. In response to a demonstration. Other than that, it stays in the ruck.
Get yourself a good Multi-tool, and a small fixed blade.

M7's are nice. A bit smaller and lighter, so it doesn't get in the way if you aren't going to use it much anyway. Not as hefty, so chopping branches and junk isn't as easy.

I'm not in the military anymore, but my favorite knife for outdoors activities is my Navy Mk 3 MOD 0 or whatever it's called. It's not very big, yet it's big enough to chop branches and do the usual menial tasks one does with a BFK (Big F*cking Knife).

It's not perfect, but it's far far far better in quality than an M9, and it's not a halfway-useless dagger type blade like an M7. I carry it more than any of my Ka-Bars. It's just nicer to me. I think Ontario makes it?

I have the M7, K-BAR and OKC-3S and they are useless to eat or work. They are great knives for the collection but they are too big. Get yourself a leatherman.

Without rambling on (too late), if you need to do some survival-ish crap, like cutting branches or diggin a hole without a shovel and all sorts of crap in the wild where the bears take a sh*t, you'll prrrrrrrrrrrrobably want a larger knife. I understand the mindset that folks think a large blade is there to make up for one's small *****, but you'll be kicking yourself if you need it. Granted, if you live in a city and don't venture out often, you probably won't need it, but then again, not everyone does that. I spend alot of time covering alot of ground and taking quite a few craps in the woods, and I must say that a Ka-Bar or similar size blade is not a hindrance. It can be helpful.
From a military perspective, if you're in and you don't do much adventure-y sh*t, you already know the answer.
Or you can just carry a Leatherman. Damn, the small parts break? Sheeyit...

I'm working in the city and in a workshop. I sometime go in other workshops for work or surveys as an electricity engineer and I need tools with me most of the time. Leatherman is perfect for that. It's small and has a nice holster. It's lightweight, stainless, and doesn't need cleaning or special care. Actually, and you almost said so, it's necessary to have different knives and improvise. There is another topic about knives and the guy said "what is the best knife". I wonder what's the best answer... I have several knives and I just pick the one I think I need at that time.

The best knife is dictated by the situation. You just have to find one that does lotsa situations rather well.
BTW, in case you didn't know Goonk, SOG has a multitool that might fit what you do: http://www.powerplaytools.com/

sorry didnt specify, a kukri is a type of blade not a make, sorta like a bowie knife or a machete. Check the net for more info...

Thanks for the link. Good knife indeed (the PT-525). But my Leatherman Supertool 200 is perfect for me. The PT-525 is aiming at the telephone/communication industry.

It's tough to design a knife that makes a good bayonet, AND a good utility knife. But, since bayonets are so infrequently used anyway (we never even issued them when going to the field), you're better off with a good utility knife instead. I have one of the Navy knives mentioned above and like it; but I use a Gerber multitool far more.
