1 hour, 16 minutes ago
SINGAPORE (CP) - Fresh from an historic victory over Fiji at last weekend's Hong Kong Sevens, Canada faces a tough challenge Saturday when it opens the Singapore Sevens against South Africa.
The Canadians also play Samoa and Singapore in round-robin play Saturday. Canada defeated the Fiijians 14-12 last Saturday for the first time since the International Rugby Board Seven series was created. The Canadians eventually lost 19-14 to Argentina in the quarter-finals.
The Singapore tournament, played over Saturday and Sunday, is the sixth of eight events in the world sevens series.
Hong Kong champion England comes to Singapore knowing a win will either draw it equal or push it past New Zealand in the race for the IRB Sevens series crown.
England is four points behind New Zealand (86) in the sevens standings. A win at the Singapore Sevens is worth 20 points, while the runners-up receives 16.
Canada currently stands ninth. The South Africans are third.
The series returns to Singapore after the 2003 tournament was cancelled over fears of the SARS (news - web sites) virus that killed 33 in the city-state.
