It looks good. But it needs to be seen if it will be in frequent use. Performance is the key.

could be use by Tanks and APC crews btw this could be a good gun for NSG provided it meet the standard. By the way the INSAS LMG that i've seen does not use large mag it uses the same 30rounds any reason why they didn't give it magazine like the M-60 or PK?

tankee1981

There are a few advantages over the older M16 type magazines. The older M16 type mags are made of aluminium a soft metal which can so can be dented especially at the 'lips' Insas magazine being plastic will not have this problem.

The Insas magazines are also transparent so you can see how many rounds you have left without removing the magazine to check, something which you won't want to do in the middle of a fire-fight.

kind of confusing and logistically speaking they choose 40mm rounds for UBGL while same time use 30mm AGL standardising both would it not make sense?

Slowly things will change, Army was never happy with 30mm AGL at High altitude..

They got to accept, the old 9mm carbine is outdated and dangerous to non infantry units, In a platoon or squad carbine is given to Officer or JCO in command..

The different type of caliber chosen by our arms force is a night mare. Let’s take in notice what I meant to say. For Submachine gun we have the 9X19mm Parabellum rounds which we used for like submachine gun, Hkmp5, sterling, sten, and for side arms like the browning Hp and Glock 17. Now it’s the 5.56X30mm for the MSMC and Zittara. 5.56X45mm for INSAS, M4A1, Fn F2000, Negev and INSAS LMG etc, 5.45X39 for ak-74 and some unit used AKS-74U carbine. Then there is the famous 7.62X39mm for the AKM “ included all Kalashnikov version” and Vz.58 and ak-103. 7.62X51mm NATO for our FN MAG, BREN LMG and the FN FAL also known as 1A SLR. Beside then 7.62X54mm for Dragunov sniper rifle and PK machine guns.
And our constabulary are still arms with Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Mk III (SMLE Mk III, aka Rifle, No. 1 Mk III) and there caliber is the 7.7X56mm
Other than this the 5.7X28mm for FN P90 and the five seven used by the SPG. 12.7X108mm,14.5X114mm and 20X82mm for heavy caliber machine or anti material guns.
The grenade for UBGL, we already use 30mm grenade for AGS-17 and want to use the 40mm for INSAS and AK and future automatic grenade launcher.
Every rounds has it merit and demerit, but what I believed is that we need to standardize is such a way it doesn’t become a logistic night mare. Take for example in platoon if we issues 3-4 variety of caliber and one run of bullet take for example a Squad who use a Uzi and other Tavor, MSMC what a quagmire they have to go through. Too many cook spoil the broth.

@Tomthounaojam,
In Army we have sufficient supply of AK & Insas Ammo also 9mm, For Dragunov we have sufficient ammo as it is mainly used by only marksman and Snipers, Now when you talk abt AK-74U and PKM those are captured weapon also ammo, We use Bren is good amount so their in no problem for its Ammo too, Regarding AGS-17, it gives good supportfire but in future we may see Indian version of 40MM AGL, the start is from Insas 40mm UBGL, 5.56mm is not very effective against Tangos therefore we are looking for new Cal 6.8x45mm, Till then we are primarily in use of M43 & SS109..

I have a question. Does the indian army still use sterling submachine guns? Forgive me if it sounds ignorant--i was watching lakshya the other day and saw NSG personnel using them in Kargil and thought it was sort of odd.

Ive seen some police in india use them. What do you make of it? Seems a sort of outdated weapon.

Yes, its made here also. Its basically carried by Section leaders and officers. But its currently in process of being phased out. The units involved in Counter insurgency have already replaced it, switching to TARAVOR and INSAS.
However the Crew's in Tanks and ICV,IFV,APC's still carry it and will continue to do so for few years in future.

As for Lakshya movie, that movie depicts 1999 Kargil conflict, so its old.

@tomthounaojam The different type of caliber chosen by our arms force is a night mare.

As you must have noticed, most of the weapons or ammo are used by Russia. It has a smaller army then India and also relatively lesser variety of deployments. It means that we are not alone.
The different calibers satisfy different operational requirement. Not that one caliber cannot satisfy a requirement but just that the other caliber satisfies it better.
And most of the pistol and PDW calibers do not demand strict logistical constraints.

In Lakshaya for the commando operation, Hrithik and other commandos wore black fatigues. It doesn't make them NSG commandos. Army commandos can also wear black fatigues.

Well i might be incorrect, but he and his men were dressed like NSG when they were climbing the mountain. Plus their kit changed, from 9mm 1A1 Sterlings to AKS-47's so it seemed like something was different. If he wasnt supposed to be NSG I'd be happy, because that would be a major WTF in the movie.

Im probably wrong, or it just might be general hindi movie huh? Like in border, screaming gives the jawan's infinite ammo/cheats on.

Bollywood should stay away from war movies.

Army Commandos use Camo clothing, Also in Army we still use 1A1 Sterling ( 9mm Carbine ) in mass, All Officers and JCO are given 9mm carbine, But some time we do have a option to have AK or Insas..

It’s pretty astonishing that our government is spending billions fo dollars in buying heavy machinery while denying little or basic protection to men’s in uniform. Mr. Gandhi once said: “Development of a country should starts from the villages, not from cities.” Backbone of every armed force is their soldiers not some aircraft carriers…….Does the gov’s effort of a population control makes the life of a soldier this cheap? It’s very Sad my friends!! My Kidoooos to all proud soldiers in this forum.

Indeed IA pic, looks old probably late 90s!
from regular infantry unit, may be dogra..

Nope, looks like Garud or MARCOS.
look at his belt, near the buckle. has blue *****es on it. I would say he is Garud. AFAIK till now only the MARCOS has the SIG. Some were seen in the hands of the NSG during mumbai attacks.

We are buying lots of stuff this days we are like on shopping non stop. But there is something that worried me lot, two things to be very precise. One the fleet strength of Submarine and Two Artillery strength. We are having only 15 submarine operational that very few i don't out that how much are on sea at a given time. The PLAN has about 50+ sub out with six are nuclear powered and our neighbor 5. and Artillery I don't even know how to react other than its in a mess.

Indian soldiers display arms and ammunition seized in a gunbattle and displayed at an army headquarter in Srinagar on August 31, 2010. Indian troops killed nine suspected militants as they tried to cross the de facto border with Pakistan that divides the volatile region of Kashmir, the army said. India has in the past accused the Pakistani army of providing covering fire for infiltrating militants. Islamabad denies the charge. India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire along the LoC in 2003 and began a peace process in 2004. LCH is deign for Indian Army, LCH can operate at high altitudes where Apache and others cannot..

The RFP for Attack Chopper was for IAF, which is possibly canceled in favor of LCH..

India's Rustom-1 UAV Makes "First Flight" Again, This Time Successfully [UPDATED] (http://livefist.blogspot.com/2010/10/rustom-1-uav-makes-first-flight-again.html)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seGfyTp3n1s

RUSTOM the Medium altitude long endurance Unmanned Arial Vehicle being developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment, a premier DRDO lab specializing in UAVs and flight control systems, was successfully flown in its maiden flight. The aircraft was flown in a manner exactly as planned, up to a height of 3000 ft. and remained airborne for 30 minutes and completed all mission requirements. It taxied, took off and landed (among the most challenging maneuvers for a UAV), using a runway at an air field owned by Taneja Aerospace, Bangalore, like a normal aircraft with the ground based pilot in full control monitoring every maneuver of the aircraft and auto mode remaining on.

Rustom with a designed endurance of 12-15 hour, 25000 ft. altitude and 75 kg pay load is forerunner to the more advanced Rustom H and UCAV. The data link for this aircraft has been developed by DEAL, another DRDO laboratory and the airframe has been built by Zephyr Aerospace, Coimbatore. The subsequent flights will test and demonstrate these capabilities such as way point navigation, altitude and endurance parameters, the systems for which have been already incorporated in the aircraft.

Dr. Prahlada, Distinguished Scientist and Chief Controller R&D (Aeronautics & Services Interaction) who was present their briefed the mission details. The flight was witnessed by Dr. G. Elangovan, Distinguished Scientist & CCR&D(R&M), Shri PS Krishnan, Distinguished Scientist & Director ADE, Shri G. Natarajan, Program Director, Shri G. Sreenivasamurthy, Project Director, and, Shri Ajoy Raman, Chairman FRR.

wheeled Nishant UAV on a tarmac/bay. The Nishant, as it stands of course, doesn't ever need a tarmac -- it is launched (http://livefist.blogspot.com/2009/04/uav-nishant-flies-with-indian-wankel.html) using a truck-based mobile hydropneumatic launcher. Did a quick check -- this Nishant was towed down the tarmac for a display, and that's where this photograph was taken. Still, nice. Thanks to PKS for reminding me about where the first wheeled Nishant (http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/media/AeroIndia2009/shiv/p2130078.jpg.html) was displayed.

A new improved variant of the Agni-II intermediate range ballistic missile is to be tested in mid-December, DRDO chief VK Saraswat told journalists in Pune yesterday. It appears quite clear that the Agni-II+ (as it is has been referred to) will be a longer range missile, possibly as much as 3,000-km and with greater accuracy. Am trying to gather more on the missile, will update this post shortly.

From the latest DRDO Tech Focus issue: "Indigenous development of the Indian ICV Abhay has led to the creation of technology base and know-how for the envisaged development of a Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV). The programme has also enabled identification of suitable industry partners, and has created pools of excellence in development of ICV sub systems The system integration capability at lab level has enhanced to a significant level, which will facilitate undertaking technology intensive programme. Development of FICV was derived mainly due to breakthrough technologies and developments in automobile industry worldwide and to meet the long-term requirements of the Services. To realise the FICV within the time frame visualised by the Army and to use the lead time available DRDO has taken the initiative to commence a technology demonstration project,'Development of Enabling Technologies' for FICV to develop a virtual prototype of complete vehicle."
http://livefist.blogspot.com/2010/10/indias-future-infantry-combat-vehicle.html

This is disappointing!
Looks like they did minor changes on BMP-2, Almost like 70s model, this is no FICV!
Today's ICVs are more concentrated on making more armored and unmanned turret with 30mm-40mm cannons combine with AGL and MGs..
Focused on more passenger and firepower plus the mobility..
I don't see such thing on this model...

I like DRDO Abhay concept more, It was focused on better firepower and better mobility with enhance protection during its time, It was way better than BMP-2....

DRDO Test-flies Nishant UAV With Structural Health Monitoring (http://livefist.blogspot.com/2010/10/drdo-test-flies-nishant-uav-with.html)

http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/5959/nishant787740.jpg

DRDO Statement: Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) a premier DRDO laboratory has conducted Nishant trials (N15-32) on 28.10.2010 at Kolar Airfield in which a technology breakthrough has been achieved. A new technology called the Structural Health Monitoring has been developed by Bangalore based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) and National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) (a CSIR establishment), for the monitoring of structural health parameters while the UAV is in flight. This break-through enables the structural health of aeronautical structures to be monitored, so that online health can be monitored and online and corrective action for the flight can be taken. This enables the aircraft to be flown without unnecessarily grounding them.

Analysis algorithms have been developed to predict onset of failures which would be perfected using the data obtained through today's flight. Usage of such techniques will avoid periodic grounding of the aircraft and make the maintenance schedules to be more like "on condition maintenance", the condition being detected even before the failure occurs. It will avoid unnecessary grounding of aircraft for inspection. Such a monitoring can be used for LCA, MCA, FGFA and other UAVs. Such techniques are going to be extensively used in the future in order to cut down the operation costs of the aircraft and can also lead to reduction in airfares. Such techniques can prevent ensuing danger of the flights by pre-warning the occurance of failure.

Glad to see good Indian women serving, but it still annoys me to see Indian Police and security forces armed with Sterling guns. You think the way the Air Force has been on a spending spree the military could afford to give them MP5s or some other type of modern CQ weapon.

If anything what was going on during 26/11 ought to be proof enough that police need more modern weapons. God forbid a pak suicide squad came with some AKs/variant.

141062
What rifle are they carrying? Is that an FN?

Its most unreliable gun in IA, Only Infantry keeps it in good shape..
MP-5 use the same 9mm, I wish for MSMC which use 5.56x30mm Armour piercing bullets..

Yes, Its the FN-FAL, though it will make more sense if they they carry Bulgarian Black polymer AK-47s..
It will look much better as well as practical as per today's situation..

if I may regarding the above conversation: First of all those are not Fn FAL but a variant of it ,know as Rifle 7.62 mm 1A1 which is base on British L1A1 Self Loading Rifle.
Yes, Sterling need to be phase out, but to say it unreliable is wrong, it has done it service to Nation for more than fifty years. Its a extremely reliable gun even tho its a open bolt blow back and the complaint is that its not so powerful to be used in hilly reason in Indian context where the 9X19mm tend to be less powerful, its swing a lot and poke the user.
Um... Replace with Hk Mp5, well it would be expensive and i reckon we replace with MSMC. If we could license produce it than it one thing but buying off shelf with be costly affair.
Talking about 9mm and comparing with gun caliber is naive. It depend on so many factor crucial one would be the length of the barrel etc and i won't go further since it will be one hack a topic.
My personal view
Ak-47M1 Type 3 polymer, I reckon its a good area where there is open space but not in where is quite crowed the round is too powerful, could cause lots of collateral damage same goes for the 7.62 1Al SLR. that is why we should issues where is required but here India its a status and ultimate gun wowIn way what Delhi police is great arming most of the cops with INSAS and Browning Fn Hp maybe Inglis 9mm of Canada. why INSAS indigenous, and Hp just convenient to carry in crowd and less powerful round but with hydrostatic shock. My dear friend look won't work at all only practicality work.
Best way to arm our Cops or Paramilitary, we need proper knee and elbow pad, a less cumbersome and power type III bullet jacket and mandatory to be worn by every one. Gun INSAS variant and AK variant, cost saving and uniform. Phase out SLR and Sterling 2012. Make SWAT for every battalion. Arms with best Money can buy..... Cheerio mate~~~woot

Good explanation..

But my view abt 9mm Carbine will be always negative, During my life i have seen many casualties coz of carbine, Its only good in Infantry coz Infantry use these carbine regularly where other branches like AMC, EME etc use after 3 - 4 months on firing range, causing the carbine work abnormally, I have seen cases like carbine burst on faces of the soldiers, that's why i don't like carbine..

I Like AK coz it simply kills, Where 9mm is not very effective also in crowded places 9mm is same as 7.62M43 both rounds can take life, It better to arm police and paramilitary with AK rather than giving FAL, FAL is longer and Indian FALs weight almost 7-8kgs which is not good for using in Urban environment, hence AK stand strong..

Excellent photos ! Thanks for sharing them.

Does anyone have any photos of the old - long retired - vessels of the Indian navy ? Specifically the old cruisers Delhi and Mysore, the old Ranjit class destroyers and the Petya, Beas and Trishul class frigates ? I noticed that while there are several of the Vikrant and the Osas, there aren't many of these old ships that gave excellent service for decades.

DRDO Conducts First Successful Flight Test Of Kaveri Engine (http://livefist.blogspot.com/2010/11/drdo-conducts-first-successful-flight.html)

The photo above shows the Il-76 test bed with the Kaveri K9 turbofan at the Gromov Flight Research Institute on Wednesday. Just received the following statement from DRDO (in full):

The indigenously designed and developed Kaveri Engine was successfully flight tested by DRDO yesterday during the Flying Test Bed (FTB) Trials at Gromov Flight Research Institute (GFRI), Moscow, Russia. The engine was tested from take-off to landing and flew for a period of over one hour up to at an altitude of 6000m at a speed of 0.6 mach on its maiden flight. The engine control, engine performance and engine health during the flight were found to be excellent. With this test, Kaveri Engine has completed a major milestone of the development program. During the coming months further 50-60 test flights will be carried out to mature the engine in terms of reliability, safety and airworthiness. These trials would pave the way for further flight trials of Kaveri engine with a fighter aircraft.

An existing Il-76 aircraft was modified as a Flying Test Bed for this trial, with Kaveri engine replacing one of the four engines of the aircraft. The modifications included instrumentation required for trials as well as integration of mechanical, electrical and fuel system. The engine was controlled by the pilot from the cockpit. A number of taxi trials were carried out with Kaveri Engine integrated with the aircraft, before this maiden flight. The engine data was recorded in the aircraft as well as transmitted to ground station by telemetry.

A team of 20 scientists from Gas Turbine Research Establishment, DRDO, have been working along with GFRI for these trials. Dr Prahlada, Chief Controller, R&D (Aeronautics & Services Interaction) briefed the Media about the significance of the first flight.

Kaveri engine is being developed for fighter aircraft at India's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), a DRDO laboratory based in Bangalore with the active support of several other DRDO labs, academic institutions and industry partners. During the development phase, Kaveri engine has successfully completed various stages of development including component testing, safety tests, ground based engine tests, endurance tests etc, both at GTRE as well as test facilities abroad.

~@Kote~ Your perception of NSG and MARCOS, to me seem a bit illogical explanation even tho you are right on where they are been send. Marcos are Basically the elite force of the Navy in line with US SEAL. Yes, they are assign certain task but their assignment is also quite similar with NSG. Both are counter-terrorist unit. where its has deal with the Somali pirate. where handle full of MARCOS again 10-15 heavily arms man. This where the logic of " MARCOS are to operate where they will be numerically out numbered by enemy. NSG mostly operate where they numerically out number the enemy" is wrong.
In India we always ask who is better arms? Well just say we are melting pot of fire arms. NSG are better arms in their own way and MACROS in their way. EX~ Marcos used AK-103 as standard issues where as NSG MP5, Sniper~SVD-S, NSG- HK PSG-1 or HK MSG-90 ~~~~

I was looking at this pic for some time, And i feel like MARCOS should give their AK-103 a tactical look?

Reflex on AK-47..

After all NSG/MARCOS should use reflex for close in combat, IA regulars on other hand have limitations, but hey MARCOS & PARA SF fight together in J&K, If PARA SF can use reflex in J&K, why not MARCOS..

MARCOS mostly aviod 5.56mm rifles Coz their work is mainly with water, AK-47/103 are magnificent rifles when we are talking abt sea/moist/sand, AK outperform most-most other rifles, 5.56mm rifles are not very good with these elements and require lots of maintenance..

HI bro, could you please describe the types of the boats please.
nice pics mate.......

The top pics are of deep sea Coast Guard cutter probably being manufactured by CSL/Goa Ship Yard and the bottom pic is that of Research vessel belonging/on order to Oceanographic Research Centre presently being built at Italian shipyard of Fincanteri.

Top 3 pics: Probably 150m Cutters

4th pic: Probably 50m Fast Intervention Craft(This I think is being built by GardenReach Shipyard)

Last Pic: Research Vessel "Sagar Nidhi" First of it's kind of vessel in India equipped with advabced lab, underwater obvervation post, equipped to handle submersibles. Also fitted with Bow Thruster.
