I remember that like yesterday, heard the news the the Marines got hit by a huge truck bomb killing over 241 Marines. I wondered if Reagan was going to nuke Lebanon lol.

After that the US "responded" in kind.;-)

What was the US response to the bombing?

The U.S. conducted an investigation of the driver and ties to Hizbullah. According to the investigation, the decision was taken in a Hizbullah strong hold in Baalbeck North East of the Beqaa Valley. The Reagon administration was briefed and an air operation was given a go. The F14s were about to be dispatched from the carrier group to bomb the site, but Weinberger (then defense secretary) called off the attack minutes before the planes were taken off.

We do not know till today why the operation was called off. It could be the lack of intelligence? Bad investigation? Fingures pointing to Syria?

We don't know. What we know is Hizbullah was accused for this operation.

But the sites that the U.S. navy was previously bombing were in the Druze monutains to give support to the Lebanese army ground troops.

The French however were not involved in any of the bombardment, but they suffered as well.

They came in peace to support the peace.

RIP

French launch an attack in the Beeqa valley with super etendard. A USN Prowler give them ECM support against SAM.
There was a leak from a member of the Mitterand staff who call the Hiz!!, the NSA intercept the communication and Reagan abort the attack, but not the French .
The Admiral in charge of the US carrier group send the Prowler to help the attack but it was an 'unoffcial misison'.
The attack was hot because the Hezbollah know the French planes path but there were no lose from each side (only sheeps on the ground).
For more details you can read this book (in french) "Pilotes dans la tourmente : Secret Défense" de Jean-Pierre Otelli.

The DGSE try also to bomb the HQ of the Hezbollah in beyrouth but the car bomb didn't explode and they a try to ignite it with a AT rocket (LRAC -F1), but miss.

Powerful images and rip to the death. :-(
I guess they are using the gas mask to avoid the smell from the corpse but does it really work? I did use my gas mask during a forest fire and still I could smell the smoke true the filter
