First 800 peacekeepers land on Saturday, 200 on Sunday
(ANSA) - Rome, September 1 - Some 800 Italian troops land in Lebanon on Saturday to join a United Nations force tasked with maintaining a UN-brokered truce between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah .
The advance contingent of 800 soldiers arriving on Saturday will be joined by another group of 200 on Sunday, said Defence Chief of Staff Admiral Gianpaolo di Paola .
"In 60 to 75 days we believe we'll be able to deploy the entire force that the government has decided to send in this first phase of operations, some 2,500 men," he added .
The multinational force will enter southern Lebanon under UN Resolution 1701, which brokered a ceasefire in the 34-day conflict between Israel and Hezbollah .
The resolution requires Hezbollah and Israel to end their military operations and obliges Israel to withdraw its troops as soon as the UN troops arrive .
The resolution, adopted on August 11, calls for an expansion of the UNIFIL peacekeeping force in Lebanon since 1978 and will help some 15,000 Lebanese soldiers enforce the truce, which came into effect on August 14 .
On Thursday, Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres said his country's troops will start withdrawing from southern Lebanon as soon as the first 5,000 peacekeepers arrive .
Italy has offered to deploy up to 3,000 soldiers, making it the biggest contingent in the multinational force .
The mission will be headed by France till February, when Italy takes over. French Major-General Alain Pellegrini, who heads the UNIFIL mission, said he was "honoured" to serve with the Italian troops from the crack San Marco and Lagunari regiments .
"We welcome this important contribution that Italy is making to UNIFIL. These troops face a huge challenge and I am confident they are up to the task". "If Italy had not decided to deploy troops in Lebanon, Resolution 1701 would have been a meaningless piece of paper," Peres said after talks in Rome with Premier Romano Prodi on Thursday .
"Italy has a worldwide reputation as a great builder of bridges so it can promote peace efforts not just in Lebanon but throughout the region" .
On Friday, Peres said there were "a number of unresolved issues, not only in Lebanon and over Hezbollah but also on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: everything will be influenced by the result of this mission" .
Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema said later he expected "a considerable part" of the force to be deployed by the middle of September .
D'Alema said he was basing his evaluation on information gleaned from talks with other foreign ministers whose countries are participating in the mission .
He praised the "efficiency and speed" with which the Italian armed forces had organised the deployment of this first contingent of soldiers in Lebanon, saying "it was a reason for satisfaction" .
D'Alema also announced that he would visit Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Territories on September 7 and 8 .
The 34-day conflict was triggered by a Hezbollah incursion into Israeli territory on July 12, when guerrillas belonging to the group killed eight Israeli soldiers and captured two others .
Some 1,000 Lebanese civilians and more than 115 Israelis, mostly soldiers, were killed during the fighting .

- either that part was staged for medias and they wanted it to be the least aggressive as possible.
- either the guys are some SF landing first a few days in advance and checking than place is secure. SF but not COMSUBIN

they still use Hueys?
whats interesting is that Israel destroys a country, and now international forces have to "clean up the mess" and nobody can say anything. If this was Russia for example that went into a near by country to free 2 soldiers (apparently of which everybody forgot) there would be so much negative **** about it

Yes, but Italian-built Augusta-Bell twin Hueys - many countries still use these and the old single-engined variant.

They are there to keep the peace and this time with force unlike what the IDF did in 82, just rolled their tanks into Lebanon breaking the barrier of the UN checkpoint.
And this goes for both the Hezees and the Israelis...remember that.

It is the second. I watched TG1 and TG2 News (RAI) and the journalist reported that the SF wanted to make sure that the sea was OK for the landing and securethe coast. It wasn't (there were large waves in the morning), thus they decided to mobilize helicopters and also send to another coast the LCMs with the heavy equipment. Afterwards when the sea was in better condition, they allowed the AAVs to proceed.
Also, this is the Agusta-Bell AB212. There is also the AB412 with the Italian Forces.

in 1982 the IDF invaded into Lebanon as a response to the assassination attempt against Israel's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Shlomo Argov by Fatah - Revolutionary Council and to artillery attacks launched by the Palestine Liberation Organization against populated areas in northern Israel - not to keep the peace.
yeah, UNIFIL were not able to keep the peace back then either...

Italy's foreign minister teased France on Saturday over its World Cup soccer final defeat to Italy, joking that the French would also come second in sending peacekeepers to Lebanon.
"Yes we are the first like in the football World Cup, but the French are coming second, very soon I think," Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema told reporters after EU foreign ministers discussed the Middle East at a meeting in Finland.
