Is it a standard issue for the M4/M16? Its just that most photos from Iraq, have everyone with an ACOG mounted on their rifles :|

marine corps issues acogs to their marines while the army issues the CCO M68 aimpoint to their soldiers

US Army also issues the ACOG to the Designated Marksman.

Trijicon ACOG's are good if you want a target magnified from a little distance. The U.S. military also uses Aimpoint M2 red dot scopes. They work good for closer targets, MOUT or in CQB. There should be a lot of pics in the galleries here. Some branches are also using EOTech Holosight scopes.http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g246/Hispeed217/k2.jpg

Soldiers may buy ACOG on their own when they want a good sight.
Same with the EOTech.

The ACOG, EOTech 500 series, and whatever the new ELCAN sight is have all recieved various designations within the universal system for optics and such things. This is as they apply to the SOPMOD kit.

I just picked up an TA31DOC for my 16" AR15. I'm not sure how rugged the Dr.Optic red dot is, but it is a sweat set up. I initially got it due to the ACOG reticle, which is like the TA01NSN only with fiber-optic lighting. It is a little more precise then the TA31F that I used to have on the rifle. I haven't really put it through the ringer yet, but I like it more then my other TA31F or TA11E. This completes my Trijicon collection on my 4 ARs.

The TA31 is awesome. I blew my mind how accurate it was with a standard M4. I could consistantly get 700m hits on targets with it. I got the privilege to carry both the M68 and the ACOG while over there. The Reflex sights are great for close up work, while the ACOG is great for 50m+. The set up with the red dot or iron sight on the ACOG is a good combo, as reflexive fire with the ACOG under 25m takes alot of practice. I preferred the ACOG where I was. Good choice, I hope you enjoy it. I'm still having trouble buying an ACOG on the civilian side. I've got a standing rule that I won't pay more for an optic than I did the weapon it will sit on;-)

Merit,
It does and can exist. Whether or not it exists in "official" inventory within the US military I cannot say. Have a look around on the AR15.COM website in the photo gallery. many different setups including this one. Here's a pic from a local album here on MP.net. Although it was just a prototype I had the privilege of firing this weapon.

The M4 CQB Free-float RAS pic is in the middle of the page. Hope that helps.

Thanks guys, but I'm back safe and sound in the States. Got back a couple months ago and promptly stationed somewhere else, so after prepping to move, moving, getting moved in with a toddler, I haven't been able to get on much until recently.
