First thing that comes to mind is, you're sick.. in the sense you may have a virus or something along those lines.

I usually never have nightmares and have a solid sleep every night, though I got a bug last week that gave me nightmares and overheating 3 nights in a row (Tsunamis and nuclear explosions... all kinds of wild stuff!).

Suggestion - multivitamins. Berocca in the morning. Eat healthy. Drink plenty of water. Take 2 days off work. Then see where you're at.

stuff on the mind DOES interfere with sleeping habits. what in particular is on your mind? have you tried getting up earlier to make you go to sleep earlier?

I don't have nightmares like you but I have always had trouble getting to sleep at night. I've sampled various methods throughout the years but the best combination of things that I have come up with to get to sleep is to:

1. Write things on your mind down so you can stop thinking about them.
2. Get some form of excercise during the day.
3. If I'm just plain not tired, Melatonin. This is the chemical your body releases when it gets dark to make you tired. Some argue it only acts as a placebo, but placebo or not, it's the only thing I've found that makes me tired and allows me to wake up in the morning without feeling hung over.

I had the exact same problem; the only way I could ever fall asleep at a reasonable time is if I had a really hard day at work and was physically exhausted. What I did was stay up all night and througout the next day, by time 11pm rolled around I was so tired because of lack of sleep. Woke up the next day round 6 and was sufficiantly rested to go through the day and became tired enough by 11 again. The only problem with this is if I stay out late some nights and end up sleeping in, I have to do it all over again. But its worth a try and you wont know till you do, just make sure you dont have to work while you trying to stay awake after not sleeping and dont fall asleep to soon no matter how tired you get, just get into a routine and keep it. Good luck!

If I took two days off work ide probley get a final warning lol or worse.. that and I cannot afford to, I need every $ I can get on a paycheck.

Ive been working on the eating Healthy aspect, and Im going to be walking to work more instead of getting the bus, but still even though I should be tired and I feel tired i just cant sleep.

It really sucks.

I "never" have nightmares but i am a chronic night-thinker.

Recently i started too force myself to work on scripts/stories/characters for a show-reel, seems to work...cant remember myself advancing very far because i cant remember anything from it in the morning.

Keeps my head from wandering into bills/work/women related issues.

I've had trouble sleeping since I was a baby. The doctors thought there was something wrong with me...... Still have trouble to this day...... sucks.

Excercise seems to currently work best. i sleep well after a surf. I also sleep better when the girlfriend is there.. (he he)

EDIT: oh yeah I remember reading something about making your bed face north so the earths magnetic field helps you sleep......

Quit the sugars and caffeines etc from early afternoon onwards. If I have a can of Coke I won't sleep for about three weeks.

Go beast yourself up and down some hills early in the morning. You'll buzz for the morning, ache in the afternoon and crash out way too early on the sofa watching the TV.

Yeah, starting an exercise regimen of some sort can help a lot, especially in conjunction with healthy eating and ditching the carbonated/caffeinated drinks.

I have trouble sleeping due to bad dreams and things on my mind, as well, though. It's a bitch. Good luck.

Firstly, try and relax about this. Worrying about not sleeping will keep you awake. You may just not need much sleep at the moment. You may also be stressed out with something personal but only you know that. If so share the problem with a friend or relative.

If you're just stressed in general with work, the world etc, have a break from this forum and don't read/watch the news for a while. Your immediate family and friends are your real world. Spend some quality time outdoors with family/friends or have a go at some type of sport or other physical activity. Lay off booze entirely. Dont drink caffeinated drinks after midday. The healthy eating thing is a good idea. Try a herbal tea with something like valerian in it in the evening.

If you're lying awake at night why not spend the time doing something useful at home instead of brooding. Try to lighten up about it and give yourself a couple of weeks to right yourself.

You might just be tense lately, and your body just adapted quickly to your new sleeping schedules. I know that if I go to sleep late for more than a couple days, then I have trouble going to sleep early the fourth day. Some people adjust quickly to any change to their schedules, and some always struggle to stay awake past a certain hour.

So when I have your kind of problem - nightmares excepted - I usually try to wake up an hour earlier, or even, more, just to tire my body quicker. If nothing else works, I listen to some talk radio program - like something about art or history, as it usually puts me to sleep even if I get interested in the program.

Back when I had it really bad, also stresswise, I postponed sleep because as soon as I slid between the sheets I'd get uneasy. Restlessly I'd turn and twist and worry about everything. The only way I could relax was lying flat on my stomac with my arms bend beneeth my body, with my fists pressed between my shoulders and the bed and with my legs crossed. Only by cutting off the curculation, I'd subdue my body enough to drift into sleep. I always woke up in the middle of deep sleep because my arms needed blood.

Could it be that you post 4am on a regular basis? I sometimes wonder.
I can only tell you get a fixed schedule. Stop posting at 11pm and get up at seven.
Shut off your PC completely. Especially if it's in your bedroom. Do something different before you go to bed, go out or read something random for a shortwhile before you try to sleep. You can mess up your habits easily by sitting in front of your PC for too long.

When i think too much at night i try not to think about the next day or what is in the uncertain future, but nice random things from the past. Sounds weird, but helped sometimes.

No. 1 is Stress, got to get rid of the Stress. Whatever is on your mind you've got to deal with it.

Go on a holiday or something, change your routine etc. What happens is you get stuck in a vicious cycle, same happens with depression, anxiety etc. If you can break the cycle your half way there.

Don't be afraid to see a doctor or a shrink as well, they can really help expecially if they are good(This is the tricky bit).

If your having bad dreams I reckon your problem may have a psycological aspect and you may want to see a Shrink to identify why your having the bad dreams, and will probably want to treat you without drugs. The best thing about a good shrink is they should give you a good understanding of what the problem is.

I think drugs have there place, so once you have some idea of what the problem is then go to the doctor and get some good wholesome legal drugs.

Remember, the objective is to break out of the vicious cycle you've got into. If you don't, it will just drive you crazy.

ps. Be careful with anti-depressants, they can do more damage that good.

Other things to do:

- Go get some acupuncture, these guys can do some pretty funky stuff, they can nearly put you to sleep by sticky needles in you. Great for releasing tension you didn't even knew existed.
- Go get a good massage a few days after acupuncture.
- Do something you enjoy, go fishing, surfing, swimming, shooting stuff, etc and start enjoying life again.

Why do americans use medication for everything? Nah seriously that's my impression over the years. Going there just backed my opinion. I'd never in my life take some sort of sleeping pills or any other anti-anything-psycho-pills unless i'd be going completely mental.

yeah..i also heard some people were 'sleepwalking' and doin weird sh*t on them like making eggs, or driving their cars..I only take them once and a while when I've got too much stuff on my mind..so im not really worried about becoming dependant....I could see how you could become addicted to them just as easily as painkillers though

Yes, and they become serious. Like any drug they become habit forming, just be carefull and use them in moderation.

Why use meds for everything?

I think it's part of the strange technocratic nature of some American folk... that they can/should control everything EXCEPT with self-discipline & hard work.

If you can pop a pill/go through a procedure and control an urge, then it's far better than trying to control the urge yourself. Someone else can always fix the problem for me... but isn't that the way a society works best (in the interdependency & specialization of labor)?

/me, I try to avoid most drugs... except for alcohol

When I came back from my second trip to Iraq, everything hit me like a ton of bricks - I had un-ending nightmares and couldnt sleep. I was the walking dead for three weeks...with only a handful of hours of actual sleep. Sometimes I think your body registers serious stress that your conscious mind doesn't notice; so its hard to fight it. I took a "f*ck it" attitude and just went about my normal day routines and slept when I could. I tried not to think about my trouble sleeping and overall tiredness, and found stuff to do while I was awake. Within two weeks of the first three I was back to a normal routine with no worries. It doesn't sound like much, but just like everything else, I think you may need some time, simply. Hope it's as easy for you to get over...but like I said, try not to think too much about it, and just pick up a hobby or work while you're awake....maybe things will fall in to place for you too. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I know how you feel Johnny since i hit 17 - 18 ive had sleeping problems mine were mainly down to. To much crap like Coke Cola and im mean to to much i drank 3 bottles(2Ltr each bottle) of it a day. Made a new years ressy to give it up i did feel like crap for few weeks that went away but i was still having problems getting to sleep. I went to my doctor to ask advice but said i dont want meds to help me. his advice was to go to bed sleep as much as you can even if it meant few hours. Wake go to work etc. that night dont go to sleep stay up and dont let yourself go to sleep go to work again. That night go to sleep at a time which you feel best like 10 - 11. You should find you have your 9 hours sleep and wake up easily. (he called it resetting the body clock) It worked for me the first time i done it but then hasnt since so as ive decide to sign up ive been running everyday and doing weight every other day i drop off pretty reasonable times now well for me anyway :)

With nightmares i found that clearing your head is best take a shower before you go to bed or have a bath relax. If that dont work if you own a MP3 player i have a ipod and i set the sleep timer for 45 mins and put one some slowish music Muse first album and Thurday work best for me and i dont have nightmares anymore. Or you could think of something you really really like and then you dream and you cant beat a dream lol! cant say i dream alot but when i do there great lol!

I have a most horrible time getting sleep. I'm a night owl and going to bed early doesn't help... I just lay there all night. Life was nice when I worked Midnight to 8am because that routine of sleeping during the day when others were at work suited me. Nothing else has before nor after.

So I stay up till I feel like I might pass out. Lots of nervous energy I guess. My Pap says it's a guilty conscience. heehee

I rarely have trouble with sleep, unless I am very tense or anxious... but I tend to be extremely relaxed and optimistic about things, so this means that I usually sleep like a baby.

When I do have trouble sleeping, I usually start to tell myself a story... starring, MYSELF! (Sometimes I cast myself as a woman, however... but we won't go there)

I usually create a story where I'm the captain of a pirate ship... or I'm on an adventure in some mysterious ancient ruin... or something like that. I get caught up in making up "what comes next" for the dream me, and that usually relaxes my mind and puts me right to sleep.

Being able to "control" the actions of my dream self & dream universe is very relaxing & distracting for my mind.

/sometimes, this then ends up in waking sleep/lucid dreaming, which is very fun... very much more "real" than the directed storytelling that I use to get my mind to sleep...

I just worry about allot of sh*t to be honest, what i could be doing, what im not doing, etc, people i havent seen, the fact i feel like im behind where i set myself to be by now this sorta stuff just drives me nuts.

Ive given up coke lol ( soft drinks ) and instead of getting a bus to work i been walking ( roughly 7-8km ish ) and I noticed a huge differance, i was awake at work first of all that rarely happens considering i only get like 6hrs sleep most times. I am a night owel lol i cant help but be awake when I was a little kid I used to try as hard as I could to stay awake, till after my parents were asleep, then ide wake up turn on my night light and play with gi goes or army men ahaha and stage little night raids and the like..... so being up at night is no biggy to me, ide be up at 1am lol being 8 yrs old thing "I am teh man!! ahah"

I am going to watch a documentory i just got about the zulu war i spose lol i guess watching all this war stuff befor bed ..... isnt so great for the sub conscious but meh.

I'm out in the Bush for 9 hours a day, 6am - 3pm. I have to have a sleep after work, because if I don't I can't stay awake after 8:30pm... and then up till after 1:30am.
I tried multivitamins, but all that did was turn my piss bright yellow. I get plenty of exercise especially hauling around a pruning ladder, handsaw, spade and loppers and not to mention all the ****ing safety gear I have to wear.

ok, this is what works for me, lie down totally still (pretend you are sleeping), make an effort to do nothing, try to stop thinking or think of nothing(hard to do), control your breathing and slow it down.
eventually that makes me fall asleep. doesnt change the dreaming part though or helps staying asleep but its a start.
