Looks plastic, is the armour some kind of kevlar instead of steel plates?

Isn't that a steel plate???!!!!!!! ;)

Kevlar would cost a ****load of money, no? Steel is more economic.

I saw a excellent show on Discovery about armoured cars a couple months
ago. They had tests of different types of armour. The fashion these days is not
really to be able to withstand 7.62 NATO, but rather the very different impact
from IED´s and RPG´s. A hard steel plate is thus obsolete. A "soft kevlar" plate, or
well several plates is a better solution. Nothing new of course, but why use
only steel when it can atleast be complemented by these modern plastics?

I think that is quite cheap from a military point of view. Military equipment
always costs a ****load of cash because there are so few who makes the stuff.
And they will probably be used for 30+ years.

MLV is a family of light armoured 4x4 vehicles, designed to meet the rigorous demands of the modern battlefield. The vehicle utilises the latest state of the art automotive technology to ensure unrivalled reliability, and the fully independent suspension provides for exceptional class leading mobility.

The MLV is available as either fully armoured or soft skinned vehicle. The armouring system uses an innovative solution of appliqué armour panels that are placed between the inner and outer skins of the vehicle. This allows MLV to easily upgrade its armour protection to meet the mission requirements, and enables through life technology insertion to take advantage of new armour materials, as they become available. Protection systems from STANAG level 1 to STANAG level 4 are available for MLV. In addition every vehicle includes full mine protection for the crew.

MLV is available with an overhead weapon station, with day and night vision, and a range of different weapons to take on diverse mission scenarios. MLV can be network enabled through secure digital radio systems.

MLV has been designed with safety in mind. The vehicle will meet the stringent European road legislation for N2G class vehicles, one of the first military vehicles in its class to achieve this without major concessions against the regulations.

The MLV vehicle is based on the Iveco LMV vehicle for which there is a requirement in Italy for 2500 vehicles. MLV provides protected mobility for up to 4 people in the UK configuration, although the Italian version provides accommodation for 5 people, with a longer wheel base version providing protection for 7. This longer wheelbase option allows the family to expand and meet new requirements in the UK and overseas.

The UK MoD has recently selected AVL to supply 486 Alvis Multipurpose Light Vehicles (MLV) for the Future Command and Liaison Vehicle programme (FCLV). In this role, MLV will be used for a wide range of battlefield missions, with variants for infantry, artillery, armour, engineer and signals users, and will replace the ageing vehicles that are currently used in these roles. These include the Alvis Saxon, the Alvis Spartan, the Alvis FV430 series and unarmoured Land Rovers.

The FCLV programme will result in several prototypes being produced in the short term to complete the "demonstration phase" of the FCLV programme, which will run until 2005, followed by the series production of 486 vehicles, to be delivered between 2006 and 2009.

I have a greta simpathy and respect for Poland, but italians do very good cars as Ferrari etc, and very good tanks and armoured vehicles.
Perhaps for this reason Brittish Army buy from Italians, and not from Poland! ;)
BTW, do you still produce the Fiat 121 in Poland? :P
no we produce seicento new panda(hmm dont know about but prabably) and few others fiat all quite new models
(and we produced fiat 125, 126, 127 duno about 121 :))
we also make Lanos and other Daewoo cars :)
And yes italian cars have very good stilistic but i prefer new line of Renault cars :D
i remember my friends fiat it was bright yellow (bahama yellow) old cabrio fiat the greatest car for picking up girls even better than new cars :D

The MOD has tasked Dstl to reduce the weight and bulk of armoured vehicles, making them 70% lighter and 50% smaller over the coming two decades.

uuhhh they really do set high expectations.

very intereting read, ill be looking forward to more on this type of armour down the road.

and as i said it is battle tested in peacekeeping misions also we didnt lost any of them in iraq... :)
And in other aplications(like comand vehicle etc) we use Star trucks and Honker and in future HMVWEE so as you see we got covered this matter :D

The problem is that the BRDM-2 isn't designed to be mine-resistant. The new types of armored utility vehicles are.

That high-angle KPV turret mount does sure come in handy in a city-fight though! :)

jeah and it also look bad-ass like some f*** little tank :D imagine that you are terrorist with ak in hand and you see that thing :D
and while dooing patrols usually they go at the end of convoy so mines are "recognized" by first truck...
I want BRDM to ride it to school... so i ask again what my grades are? but now look at parking lot... :D
