I was just wondering, I hope this is not a dumb question. How come in the Afghanistan U.S. SF galleries I see a lot of operators wearing OD chest rigs and tactical gear with tan desert camo? Does OD work good with tan in the desert boondocks? Or is that what they had when they were called up so they just used it? Any feedback is welcome. Thanks.

That was probably the best they were issued...

(just a guess).

and they're waiting to recieve their shipment of gear in coyote/camel that they had to buy on their own.

(again, I'm guessing here)

I think the pics of SF with OD rigs were taken before MOLLE/interceptor was general issue, the old PASGT stuff probably wouldnt do so they recieved it before it became standard and manufactured according to the woodland, 3 color camoflauge.

Depending on where they are operating there is vegetation. Similar to other dry areas. Like parts of AZ. The green vegetation is above the tan/brown dirt and sand. Therefore, make like the environment. Green or woddland on top and tan on the bottom. Not a lot of vegetation I know of in a desert climate is tan in colour. A large tan coloured object tends to stick out. Again, this is dependant on where you're operating. Bare ass desert, I would want Tan or MARPAT all around. Areas with several colours, I'd want several colours/patterns.

SF guys dont always go with what they are issued, Usaly they take what best suits them or what is most comfortable. Some even buy their own, so some of it is personal prefrence

Just like the brits in Afghanistan did: desert DPM pants and DPM jackets.
Or when you are in a wood in the late winter:
Cam.jacket and snowpants.

Its only been recently that US SOF issued load carrying equipment came in any color besides green or woodland.. The only exception really was 5th SF group (whos area is the middle east) who received 3 color SPEARS/BALCS items.

Normally the teams will just take spray paint to everything anyway, if camo is that important. Normally though, having OD green stuff doesnt really matter.. If you are not moving(where they can see you anyway), you will be on your belly or beind cover anyway.

OD is kind of the default color for gear. It will work with pretty much anything: desert, woodland, digital etc. Black is definitely out!
