Some pictures I've taken from around campus. The old Fort Preble fortifications and a couple of post buildings that still remain.
(Also posted here: http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11363)

A gun emplacement overlooking the harbour.

I'm not certain what purpose this area served, but it was fallen in bad disrepair.

The view from the top of the leftmost bunker. The entrance (see below) is semi-blocked.

The metal door that has fallen shouldn't be too difficult to climb over.
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/2544/ArmouryBunker1.JPG
I'm fairly sure this was the old armoury bunker. There used to be a door on the side that somebody had broken open, so it was possible to get inside, but that's since been repaired.
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/3094/ArmouryBunkerCarving1.JPG
This is carved above the centre doors in the armoury bunker. It says:
"Built in 1904
on the site of
Fort Preble
erected
1808."
http://www.imageshack.us/img1/9625/AbandonedGunEmplacementDistance1.JPG
A larger emplacement just to the left of the armoury bunker. Fifty-four years of disuse has taken its toll, unfortunately.
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/2871/SmallerBunkerEntrance2.JPG
This is the entrance to a smaller bunker about seventy yards or so from the armoury bunker. It seems that efforts to block up the entrance have been made, but it's still easy to get inside.
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/8758/AroundTheCorner3.JPG
The view around the corner. Unfortunately, it's too dark to go far inside without a powerful flashlight.
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/1025/HarbourviewResidenceHall1.JPG
This building currently serves as a dormitory, but was the Commanding Officer's Quarters in 1902.
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/5353/FinanceOfficeFrontView1.JPG
This was the Fire Station in 1921. Now the Finance Office.
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/8813/PrebleHallSideView4.JPG
This was the Company Barracks in 1903. Now a general-use classroom building.
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/6240/HoweHallDistanceView1.JPG
This is the Criminal Justice/Fire Science building. It was a hospital in 1902, but was converted to barracks in 1939.
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/7963/CatesBuildingFrontView1.JPG
The Post Headquarters in 1904. Now the Cates Administration Building.

Any ghost stories?
Maine Finn

Not really.
I got a good spook when I broke into the armoury bunker to look around... something inside went bang, even though I was the only one in there. I've never gotten out of a place so fast. Of course, I only had my headlamp for light, and it doesn't have a very powerful beam, so it was pretty fukkn dark in there.
The doors have since been re-sealed, but there are other places to explore.

Yeah, really. "Pay attention, or else!"
It's really creepy inside there. All the doors have either been welded shut or secured with chains and padlocks. On the far side of the bunker, the chain on the door had been removed and left open. There is no light inside at all. I could barely see, even with my headlamp. It's like walking-in-graveyard-at-night creepy.
I need to get a decent flashlight (preferably a Mag-lite) before I go back there. I really do have no fear. Either that, or I'm just dense.
Anybody want pictures from inside when I get them?

It is. The beach is a semi-popular place for rapes in the summer. I don't go out there unless I've got my river knife and my headlamp with me.
But it's a good place to sit and watch the ships come in and out. Sometimes when I go down there, I'll sit and almost fall asleep listening to the waves.
Corny, I know, but it's soothing to me. I'm gonna miss it when I graduate.
That's interesting Finn...a lot of history there:) But pretty creepy hehe.

This is on the far left side of the fortification line. The opening is too small for me to get through, unfortunately.

This emplacement is to the left of the gunnery post. Long forgotten and neglected like everything else.

These are to the right of the above picture. I'm on top of the bunker.
http://www.imageshack.us/img2/2959/RemainsofEmplacements1.JPG
The same emplacements. It looks like the rest of the line was demolished, as is the case with a lot of the buildings and fortifications. It's a shame, really.
Sometime this week, I'm going to go inside the small bunker and have a peek around.

Good question. I was looking a site about that yesterday, but I can't remember what the link is.
If I had to guess, I'd say that it was just that. Defence. There was a lot going on in the world in the early 1900s that would justify having bases of this type around. There were a string of forts and coastal batteries all along the coast.
This (Fort Preble) was a garrison for the 5th Infantry, but not during the timeframe you're referring to. I'm actually not sure which regiment was garrisoned here at that time. I'll have to look it up.

Another view inside the office.

The door. It's in pretty bad shape, like most of the stuff down there.
I wouldn't recommend doing what I did to anyone who doesn't know what they're doing, especially not the way I did it. I disregarded just about everything I've been trained to do when venturing out into the "unkown". If you're going to do this sort of thing, at the very least, tell someone where you're going, and what you'll be doing!! Most importantly, give them a timeframe, so they'll know when to expect you back. I didn't do any of that, and it was the very first thing that I was trained to do.
Just a little bit of a warning. I figured I should throw that out, although I'm certain most of you know better than I do.

A short passage that looks as though the way out has been covered over with dirt and rocks. I haven't noticed a possible exit point on the hill, but there's so much grass and vegetation, it's likely been covered over.

I wonder what happened to the floor to make it collapse so badly.

Welcome to "****'s Place".
Again, see the warning at the end of my previous post. And I hope you enjoyed the photos. I had a blast taking them!

It's in Ferry Village, in South Portland. If you know where that is, I'll show you around myself. ;)

What part of Canada do you live in? The Maritimes, or inland?

Bump.
I'm going back underground tonight to check something out. Went back through the pics earlier today, and noticed something odd. I'll post what pics I take later.
EDIT:
Anyone got a hammer and chisel they could loan me? There's a wall ten paces in one of the bunkers that's keeping me from where I want to go. p-)

Be careful, it doesn’t look to safe down there :|

Bah, what's a little danger? It wouldn't be any fun if it was completely safe. Just have to watch where I step is all. :D
