View Full Version : wound powder??
I heard a while ago about a wound powder issued to US forces in Iraq.
Does anybody know more about it? It belongs to the first aid kit.
It was said that the powder should be put into the wound to stop it bleeding.
Any info??
Thx.

It's called QuikClot. It works by adsorbing water out of blood to form a clot.
I don't know how well it works though.

Is it like the sulphur powder used in WW2 a la Saving Private Ryan?

It is supposed to work very well.
There have been complaints about it not stopping the bleeding with arterial wounds with massive bleeding, but I think that is an unreal expectation. I hear that otherwise it is well liked.

There was also a concern regarding patients receiving chemical burns from the product. The problem, from what I've been able to tell is that the first responders have poured water into the wound first, prior to applying the QuikClot. The result is that the QuikClot reacts with the water, and this will create some nice 2nd and 2rd degree burns.
So, the proper way of applying it is to wipe off any dirt and debris (if you really feel you have the time to do it) and then pour the QuikClot into the wound without adding any water - just let the QuikClot react with the blood.
You can order it from QuanticoArms (http://www.quanticoarms.com/asp/ma****tail.asp?CMNum=30) (amongst others.)
Personally I bought a similar product of a different brand instead - Traumadex (http://www.traumadex.com).
