the title says it all,

manual 5 speed for me :D

i dont think i could have a small sedan/coupe without it being manual, maybe if i had an SUV or truck i could see having an auto, but everyone thinks differently.

I think the manual stick shift as we know it will vanish within a generation.

We recently got a new minivan to cart the little one around... I don't think there was a manual option, although I can drive with a manual transmission.
It does have an "autostick" feature, but I don't see the point.

I've always loved minivans (especially now that fancy SUVs are the domain of soccer mom-bitches), although I probably would have gotten a pickup truck if we didn't have our daughter.

"You think that's funny? Would you like to know, smarta**? Would you like to know why I can't drive this kinda car?

Manuals are for people who have a need to control things/people.

I used to drive a manual but after burning through 3 clutches, I decided that it was not for me.

Also I hate stopping on a steep hill going up because of traffic or traffic-lights and having some idiot stop inches behind me - that's stressful :( I've came close to rolling down and hitting the car behind me.

Both....but stick is a bitch in traffic and after two knee operations the clutch is a real pain after a few hours. You need to be able to drive what ever is out there cause you never know when you will have to make a hasty move in what ever you can beg borrow or steal. I learned to drive stick in a M-151A2 (Mutt) Jeep. Took me all of about 20 minutes or so to get good enough to go anywhere with it. It is a very forgiving vehicle. :)

I have both. I like to use the Auto for city driving and the manual for rural driving. Having to drive a 5-speed thru the city sucks. Plus, I like to do most of my own maintenance and putting a new clutch assembly into a car sucks azz, so I like to beat it as little as possible.

4 Speed Hurst....the only way to travel

Now that's a REAL car!

I've driven both manual and auto, but I don't think the manual could have spoken for all since it was an old early 90's Civic, worthless (not my car)

I have an auto right now, great for the heavy traffic and 35mph speedlimits but I'd rather a T-66 transmission :D

Though for these newer auto's, get it tuned right and it will be better than any manual could be.

Also depends on the car you purchase. I buy used so I get what comes along. That and depending on the model, they may only produce them in automatic. I drove mostly manuals and like them but when I went to a bigger car, 4 speed auto was all that were available.

Anyone ever driven a tiptronic? Whats it like?

Don't know if it's called tiptronic, but i drove a car with a regular gearbox, but without clutch. It's strange, manual gearchange without moving your feet.

But it was a Twingo or some small car. I guess you're talking about a sequential shift. Whatsoever, i'd like to drive a car with F1 shift. Haven't done it yet.

Btw i prefer manual. I only drove very few automatics, but i think it's boring and doesn't feel like driving.

daily666
09-14-2006, 11:29 AM
I did drive most of modern cars with autoboxes (Tiptronic is a trademark of VW/Audi/Porsche/Seat/Skoda) that have manual (paddle) shifting. The Group VW DSG sequential gearbox is the closest to perfection because while being a standard manual gearbox (no hydrokinetic clutch) with two standard clutches that shift gears almost as fast as a human being (instant) it also does work in normal auto so lazy people can drive it too.

here's a diagram of Audi TT 3.2 quattro DSG box

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/838/32audittdsglb4.jpg

Autobox has one big drawback for me, you cannot use the breaking power of the engine so flexibly as in stickshift transmission, it's also more fuel consuming (much heavier) and not fast enough.

I see the difference is not being a car enthusiast or not, but the line of division lies across the Atlantic. Europeans prefer the stickshift while Americans love the autoboxes. It's the same difference as in cars in general, different specs, looks, size, types for different markets.

In Europe you get an automatic transmission either you're a woman and you have this small CVT transmission in your Panda/Micra/Punto or whatever; or you're really a rich guy who buys a Merc/BMW/Audi/Jaguar etc. and get a super-smooth 6- or 7- gear automatic transmission because sometimes you don't have even a choice of manual. The high-end of transmissions are those sequential gearboxes like DSG (Audi), SMG by BMW or F1 Gearbox from Ferrari (150 miliseconds to change a gear there).

i want to say im against this, but in some cases it is true, especially here in the states or places where the land is flat.

but in places like europe where there are countless hills and curves, alot of people prefer manual, my aunt & uncle who live in norway have a family minivan thats manual, only because it works better where they live than an automatic does.

and manual gives you alot better control of your engine, and an automatic tranny can eat up to 10% of the engines horsepower.

and manual gives you alot better control of your engine, and an automatic tranny can eat up to 10% of the engines horsepower.

Slightly off there, manuals lower it around 10%, autos around 15%, but of course that depends on the car.
Doesn't matter how good your car is, you will always lose HP, no matter what, by the time it reaches your wheels. A car with 250HP at the crank probably only has 200 RWHP in actuality.

And if you buy a used manual, you don't always know what kind of stress the previous owner put on the clutch, he may have been skipping gears, redlining, etc etc burning the clutch up, and most people aren't aware of that so they get even less performance. Different case for Automatic as it is much more consitent than a manual tranny..only bad thing would be if the driver went into 4th gear WOT with the O/D band on, that = bad.

Apparently you are unfamiliar with the vast portions of the western United States or nearly anywhere on the east coast and all of New England. These hills and curves and dirt roads you speak of are an alien concept. For f*cksake, half the world disparagingly calls the US a car culture when we burn too much oil but when it comes to driving, suddenly we're the banjo player in Deliverance. I don't buy that. I just think there is more diversity in the US because of the size of it. No way I would drive the same way someone in Florida or California does. I know it was stupid but you really must be good in driving technique if you want to drrve in Poland effective. Polish roads are full of shyt. True :|

CJ I'm not denying the facts you provide us with, because we've got many unpaved roads in Poland too, and there are even more in Russia. The off-road capability of a truck is/would be very useful. But as for thread subject, you gotta admit that the preferrences of buyers differ when you look at USA and Europe. Most US cars are offered with automatic box as standard whereas in Europe you wouldn't even get a possibility to get an automatic transmission.

Uh and I forgot one major thing, cars in USA are much much cheaper than in EU.

Seriously the problem with the traffic in britain has more to do with the fact that you drive on the wrong side of the road then with the quality of the road itself. ;-)

On topic:
I drive a manual. Someone said that they thought that the manual gear boxes would be gone within one generation. I think that you are wrong, the europeans will still drive manual. Both because of fuel economy, trust, driving styles and cost.

I have driven both automatics and manual from a bunch of different cars. They all differ, alot. Personally I can't really understand why you would drive an automatic unless you have a dissability of some sort.

Actually when you order most cars you have the option of getting them with an automatic but that will cost you extra.

Off topic (mostly):

Who said 180% taxes on all cars :-(

Choosing automatic transmission in Denmark will usually cost you around 30.000kr, or almost 5.000$ translated.
Besides, you learn by default to drive "a stick", automatic gearboxes also increase fuel consumption = even more taxes to pay each year just to have the car parked in front of your house, not to talk about the fuelcost it self.. (yes, fuel is almost 2$ per litre in most of Europe AFAIK, at least here it is.)

Generally Denmark isn't exactly the country for people who like cars, people will imigrate (ok i can't remember if its emigrate or imigrate here? Help.. :S) to Sweden or Germany just to save the taxes.

On topic, in short:

I drive a manual.

my truck is auto, contrary to what everyone has posted I CAN drive a manual...i prefer auto for a truck though, unless i were to get something bigger like a diesel or a dually...

learned to drive manual on tractor/a ford escort/a 1990 5.0 police interceptor (exxxxxxtremely forgiving though) im decent but not great because i don't do it much. also i have a piece of meniscus missing in my right knee from football (american) so it hurts for me to just drive my auto truck for long distances much less playing with gas and brake in traffic if i drove a manual!

And when someone move TO sweden because we are supposed to have lower taxes then you know that something is messed up.

i for myself drive manual (Audi A4 2.4) and i only new a few persons who drive automatic(mostly they are over 60 ore female...).one reason might be that in germany 99% of the people make their drivers license on manual cars,so its no problem for them to handel.

btw:driving on the autobahn with an automatic is so boooringp-)

I have never even tried automatic since I don't know anyone who would have one. Driving manual can be quite irritating though in cities, when you have to change all the time between gears 1-3 just to move couple of hundred meters.

lol, no way manuals will be gone in a generation, manuals will be around as long as the internal combustion engine.

Automatics are better for city driving, also they rock for bracket racing and getting off the line in general. High stall torque converters that lock up rock.

I am sorry but I really doubt that the combustion engine will be gone within one generation. You might not fuel it with gasoline but you will most likely have a combustion engine of some sort.

Automatics are not better for city driving. They are easier to drive but not better.

I am sorry about that, did not read your post carefully enough. I agree with what you said, except for the part about automatics being better for city driving.
