I heard from my history teacher that during the Battle of Tora Bora, Rumsfeld refused to send reinforcements and that Osama was able to escape because of that. Is this true? :(

I think Rumsfeld wanted the Afghans to capture him, perhaps symbolically or what, who knows...but you really couldn't trust the Afghans at that time...and plus US CentCom could have sent more troops, too...but noooo....

Yeah my teacher said something about how we payed an Afghan warlord to capture him, but then Osama payed him off and he walked.

Your history teacher probably also told you that we gained won the Revolutionary War because we hid behind trees and the British stood out in the open.
Just because it comes from a teacher doesn't make it gospel.

Hmm... would not have been at all easy to reinforce with conventional troops in the time frame. No bases to leap from, no one standing by on transports, most important, no viable airbases to fly into.
Plus the Intel of the ground was sketchy... no one had any maps of the caves, all the info was 2nd hand and hear say.
Add in the buyable loyalty of the Afghans and you can see that, even if Rumsfeld had been able to send in reinforcements in good time, there would still have been no guarantee of successful capture or killing of OBL.
Now don't go telling them that. Just smile, nod, get your grades. Being qualified is a damn sight more important than being "right".

From what I have read and heard about the Tora Bora operation, the Afghanistan military was the primary force in the attack. US Special Forces worked in more of an advisory role, directly some of the attacks and also taking care of the air stirkes.
There is no proof of exactly when OBL left Toro Bora, however I would imagine that he would have left when the B-52's starting dropping ordance overhead...

What the F*CK might seem appropriate and clever.. but not really descriptive of the thread. If you are going to continue this thread.. change the title and then PM me. I will unlock it then.
