Why weird? With a little bit of historian knowledge, youŽl see, that Yugoslavia wasnŽt that orthodox socialistic-komunistic state after all!

I wonder why the US selled weapons to a then communist block country but maybe Tito was different.

Actually, Yougoslavia wasn't a communist block country, yes it was a communist one, but it had nothing to do with Warsaw Pact. And Tito himself was more western oriented than to the east. Tito even founded community of non-union states together with India, Algeria, Indonesia etc...

The Yugoslav Communist Party was expelled from Cominform in 1948 and Tito tried to insure support from the West. The sale of weapons was a way to keep Yugoslavia outside the Soviet sphere of influence.

Tito became more western oriented, because he had to. Till then he was "Stalin's best pupil".

Actually being pro-Stalin in Yugoslavia back in a late forties and early fifties would mean jail for you, or execution. Only after Stalin died and Hruschov took over did Yugoslavia start getting Soviet weapons and getting closer with the SSSR. New leadership wasn't so tightass towards Yugoslav version of socialism. But anywayz... Yu was never considered 100% ally.
I like to speculate... if Stalin lived ten more years, what would be Yugoslavia's history now?

Sabres for Yugoslavia
During 1955-57, Yugoslavia's air arm, the Jugoslovensko Ratno Vazduhoplovstvo (JRV), got 122 of the ex-RAF Sabre F.4s which had been returned to the USAF. Yugoslavia was one of the few nations with an air force that flew both Western and Soviet Bloc combat aircraft side-by-side. During a border incident in the late 1950s, a JRV Sabre shot down a Hungarian MiG-15.
Eight Yugoslavian F-86E(M)s were eventually transferred to the Fuerza Aerea Hondurana, the first of which arrived in 1976. Some of these Sabres remained flying into the 1990s, but by now they have probably all gone to the boneyard....(http://home.att.net/~jbaugher1/p86_22.html)
