I've just been reading a post inquiring as to what 'uniforms' the IRA wore, if any and it made think about how little other countries know about this bloody conflict. Don't get me wrong, it's an innocous question, but one which needs answering again. The only uniform the IRA would wear (or the I ran away) is old British DPM's and jeans. (with good trainers to run in) They were not soldiers (nor were the UFF etc.) but civilians with normal jobs.
A great deal of the IRA's funding, came from American business men, with some old fashioned ideals about 'freedom fighting'. Nothing could be further from the truth; these terrorists (Republicans AND Unionists) were nothing different from the one's who crashed jets into the World Trade Centre - cold blooded killers who would/will use innocent men/women and children to attain the goals. If the bastards WOULD wear a uniform and fight like men, then it'd all be over by lunch time. If you want to explore the truth abouth the last 30 years conflict in Northern Ireland, read 'SOLDIER'S TALKING' and it'll tell you more than any website can.

Hi welcome to the boards

Use a normal font or it pisses off the mods.
Equally this is ripe for flaming from certain posters but hope it can stay on track.

The dichotomy between AQ and PIRA isnt always noticed or appreciated round here... :(

Just 2 things Billy.

The saying "IRA i ran away" is referring to the IRAs failure to protect Catholic communities from Loyalist mob attacks.

Also the violent groups are Republicans and Loyalists, Nationalists and Unionists, although not totally innocent, are the moderate ones here.

Just to add taking the history of the Troubles from ONE side/view/account of the "truth" isn't the best way to get the Truth.

Plus that bit about "fighting like men" would be a bloody stupid thing to do if you happen to be fighting a well trained and equipped army. Why would you do a silly thing like that if you lacked training, weapons and men?

Agreed - but the IRA (as in Irish Republican ARMY) refer to themselves as soldiers of Ireland.

Strangely that never stopped them from bleating like a load of fcuking schoolgirls every time one of them got shot.

Like all cowardly scum they wanted to have it both ways instead of playing the game by big boys rules.

Well of course, the problem with the running and hiding bit is it's not very glorious. So you'd call yourself soldiers of whatever and donn some uniforms for nice videos and try to look professional.

Did they even actually use all those weapons they had in those videos?

I'm not sure what videos you mean but IIRC the IRA have used weapons as heavy as SA7 MANPAD (unsuccessfully), 12.7 mm DShK machine guns, 7.62 mm M60 and FN MAG, RPG7 AT launchers, 'home made' mortars/rockets of various calibres, Barratt .50 cal sniper rifles in addition to other small arms and of course IEDs.
