I don't think it would have had happened with the British troops for example. European armies rules would have not allowed such a stupid attitude.

This video* is indeed fun to watch but those young soldiers/tankers just acted as kids and not as professional soldiers (the "gun shooting" à la Bad Boys is just f**** ridiculous).

Hundreds of little incidents and cultural mistakes like these made the inhabitants angry and cautious of American troops. It is one of the many reasons why the US fell to win hearts and minds right after the fall of Baghdad.

When confronting locals during patrols/VCPs...

1) Language skills allways come handy
2) Be patient, yet firm and never budge in matters of rule bending. If you give them the tip of your finger, they'll swallow the rest of your hand in no time if your not awake.
3) Try allways to work in pairs. 2 gives more authority than 1, even if confronted persons are more than 1-2.
4) Be firm but calm. If subject won't back off, go from calm and low voiced to angry in an outward show of explosive roar and back to calm again.
Use the shock effect to dominate opposition to get it to back down.
5) Avoid addressing subjects with derogatory remarks like SOB, you scumbag...etc.
6) Ability to put on a smile often reduce tension in the most unlikely situations.

That's my impression from Lebanon peacekepping at least.

Crushing a car used for stealing = common practise.

Shooting up the cars with your handguns hood-style and having a blast infront of the kid about it = unproffesional.

Maybe they paid the owner to smash up the car?
Yet the action doesn't seem to have taken place within base.
Maybe the tanker were stitched up (they don't appear to be too bright)?
They should at least have been aware, given the location where action was filmed, that it could be used to convey the wrong sort of message.
If there had been a lot of peope standing around watching, it would immediately have been obvious it was some sort of show off demonstration and message in movie thus out of context. Yet there aren't that many soldiers or civilians standing around watching.
Seems someone perhaps have been really had here?
