View Full Version : PMCs defend US HQ in Najaf

An attack by hundreds of Iraqi militia members on the U.S. government’s headquarters in Najaf on Sunday was repulsed not by the U.S. military, but by eight commandos from a private security firm, according to sources familiar with the incident.
Before U.S. reinforcements could arrive, the firm, Blackwater Security Consulting, sent in its own helicopters amid an intense firefight to resupply its commandos with ammunition and to ferry out a wounded Marine, the sources said.
The role of Blackwater’s commandos in Sunday’s fighting in Najaf illuminates the gray zone between their formal role as bodyguards and the realities of operating in an active war zone. Thousands of armed private security contractors are operating in Iraq in a wide variety of missions and exchanging fire with Iraqis every day, according to informal after-action reports from several companies.
In Sunday’s fighting, Shiite militia forces barraged the Blackwater commandos, four MPs and a Marine gunner with rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47 fire for hours before U.S. Special Forces troops arrived. A sniper on a nearby roof apparently wounded three men. U.S. troops faced heavy fighting in several Iraqi cities that day.
The Blackwater commandos, most of whom are former Special Forces troops, are on contract to provide security for the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Najaf.
With their ammunition nearly gone, a wounded and badly bleeding Marine on the rooftop, and no reinforcement by the U.S. military in the immediate offing, the company sent in helicopters to drop ammunition and pick up the Marine.
Now my question is why the 8 PMCs along with MPs and a Marine didnt receive US military assistance for HOURS, but had to COMPLETELY rely on lifesavers from Blackwater?
Is there a shortage of conventional forces?

Yes Blackwater operates helicopters to transport personnel and, in this case, supplies and medevac services.

Having private companies with mercenaries (I use that term because I assume
that the Iraqis see them as that), is probably not a way to make Iraqis love the
occupation. Giving private citizens some sort of license to kill, it feels wrong.

Unlike the Finns who fought in WWII on the side of the Nazis, I don't think Blackwater has any ties to a brutal, repressive ally like Hitler's Germany.
Man, the "boo birds" are really coming out. When you read the latest postings of people like mustamato and others who are against the war-- which I don't find fault with-- it seems like they actually would like the U.S. to leave Iraq to murderers like Sadr and are cheering on the insurgents, which I think is heinous.
It's the same old song: Whenever coalition losses are noted, they cheer on the Baathists and other fanatics; however, when Americans persevere they are labelled as being bad guys.
Where were all these European naysayers when Hussein was brutally suppressing the Shiite majority?
Now that democracy has been introduced to Iraq, the right to demonstrate has been allowed. What hasn't been allowed is the murder of those in your own religion just because you disagree with them, and armed uprising to promote your own selfish ends. These uprising arn't about Iraqis rejecting democracy but about a young religious zealot making a political move for more power within his own sect and, he's hoping, the country.
I know our friends across the waters won't give it a break and we will continue to be bombarded with lengthy posts on how they would run the world but, hey, newsflash, you are too impotent to make a change even in your own country let alone on the world stage, so get over it.
Until then, I am going to take the advice of many here by simply ignoring the anti-American rants and would suggest our younger patriotic forum members to refrain from getting into pissing matches with them because that is what they want. They are turned on by insulting America and starting flame wars. Let them stroke each others fragile egos and see how long they can entertain each other.

WEll if 8 of them can hold out against hundreds for HOURS, then they dont NEARLY get enough for their professionalism.
(They probably had a LOT of chances to "bounce", but they chose to stay and face overwhelming odds)
If they were doing it just to pay their mortgage, Tthey probably would run away.
Just don't throw in mustamato with the rest of the Europeans okay XASA? :)
P.S. what's all the fuss about; the guys were there to provide security for a building, the Iraqis attacked, they did their job. That's it.

All of them are better trained and have more experience than the young soldiers there, no doubt.
But they were surrounded, no chance to run away. Everyboy will fight to death under this conditions, surrender will be worse than death....

How many anti-France postings have you read lately? There were many of us, myself included, who took on idiots like Sixgun and George W. Bush. Go back and read some of those threads if you think we ignored their badmouthing.
As I said in an earlier post, I am not and never intended to lump all Europeans together. Having been stationed and lived in Europe for several years, I have nothing but respect for them. I was referring to Europeans who are littering militaryphotos.net with political spam at an increasing rate. Their biggest crime is that it is repetitive and boring.

There has been very few anti France post in recent times but I did refer to the period last year when it was common place to see anti France tirades from Americans, I am aware that certain Americans defended the French but they were few in number.
There are more than a few Americans littering the forums with rhetoric and spam I think it would be hard to apportion blame for these acts. I bear no malice in my heart for Americans but many on this forum have dirty hands when it comes to nationalistic rhetoric and insults.
True. I gotta give XASA credit though that he's not one of those and clearly expressed his 'concern' about Sixgun and American brethren. ;)

Two wrongs don't make a right regardless of nationality. Those Americans you refer to were usually very young and immature, and were initially attracted to militaryphotos.net because it was "cool" (the airsoft bleedover). The Mods have done a great job of maintaining some sense of decorum and their rhetoric has, for the most part subsided, or is immediately challenge. The recent banning of George W. Bush is a good example that xenophobic, racist rants will not be tolerated regardless of one's political background.
My point is that there is nothing wrong in raising issues about the War in Iraq. My problem is that some here seem to revel in American losses (the ode thread that was just locked is the prime example). They are also, for the most part, repetitive and add nothing to the debate.
I have repeatedly said that I think it was a war that didn't have to be fought; however, now that we are involved, it has to be resolved in a manner that will not be detrimental to the Iraqis or the Americans stationed there.
You see, I'm biased in one regard, I fought in a war that wasn't supported by the American people and we Vietnam Veterans bore the brunt of that criticism even though we had nothing to do with the policy that put us there. Once the soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen are safely back home, you can rant all you want. Until then, I'm going to call it like I see it.

I think I read somewhere, that the numbers of security company contractors was as high as 25.000 in Iraq. Allegedly the US efforts there are dependant on them. So the whole thing in Nadjaf may not be that surprising.

Yes, as far as I know, they defend assets for the Coalition Provisional Authority and private contractors so that the Coalition nations' militaries can put more resources to patrolling and quelling violence.
So, if they were not there, then many US, British, and other coalition troops would be stuck defending things like oil pipelines or foreign contractors.

Frankly it was a very impressive defense against considerable odds. Mini Rourke's Drift.
Considering what happened to their fellow comrades not long ago, I doubt they were willing to give up at all and I'm glad they did'nt. True warriors.
Im under the impression they all made it out ok ?? If so I'm glad they did.
I'm sure they feel lucky that they got to kill so many bad guys. If I was an employee for Blackwater I'd have given anything to be fighting right beside them on that rooftop. woot
Wow Argyl, I guess you revert to "squaddie" when you get pissed off hehehehe. Arnt you suppossed to be in Iraq chewing khat by now bro ???
