Who was Carl von Clausewitz?

Carl Phillip Gottfried (or Gottlieb) von Clausewitz (1780-1831) was a Prussian soldier and intellectual. He came from a middle-class social background, though his family claimed noble origins and these claims eventually received official recognition. He served as a practical field soldier (with extensive combat experience against the armies of the French Revolution and Napoleon), as a staff officer with political/military responsibilities at the very center of the Prussian state, and as a prominent military educator. Clausewitz first entered combat as a cadet at the age of 13, rose to the rank of Major-General at 38, married into the high nobility, moved in rarefied intellectual cirles in Berlin, and wrote a book which has become the most influential work of military philosophy in the Western world. That book, On War (in the original German, Vom Kriege) has been translated into virtually every major language and remains a living influence on modern strategists in many fields.

Enjoy!

Still good relevant stuff, but it's hardly "Dierdre's Photo Casebook"!

I read it while in the Naval Academy in english because a spanish version was hard to find. I really liked the book, although there are many things that have changed since Von Clausewitz's times.

At last someone mentioned the great master of military analysis! I think Clausewitz "On war", together with Sun-Tzuīs "The art of war" are a must among tose who love military history.
I would also recommend Jhon Keeganīs "History of warfare". Itīs a good reading, and in a certain way challenges Clausewitz famous assertion that "...war is a continuation of politics by other means.". I read it in english but has been translated also to italian and spanish.

These two are often refered to as most important strategy writers and completlly opposed to each other, one prsenting "Western" other "Eastern" way of fighting. However there is an interesting book by Michael I. Handel "Masters of War" which compares them. Interesting read but I sugest you read it after you read both books. Also be carefull which edition you buy. Third edition (2001) includes Kosovo/OAF as well.
