Polish ruling coalition collapses

Poland's ruling conservatives are setting about forming a new government after PM Jaroslaw Kaczynski said he would sack his left-wing deputy.
Andrzej Lepper had repeatedly criticised Mr Kaczynski's Law and Justice party over the budget.

Mr Lepper, a former pig farmer famous for organising farmers' protests, urged more help for rural areas and opposed sending extra troops to Afghanistan.

The ruling coalition has only been in power for four months.

Trading accusations

"I decided to ask the president to dismiss Andrzej Lepper," Mr Kaczynski said late on Thursday.

He said Mr Lepper had "gone back to his old practices of sowing discord".

In response, Mr Lepper accused the prime minister and his party of belittling him and not consulting him on major policy moves.

"They are not made for constructing, but for destroying. They will agree only with people who are on their knees before them," he said.

Mr Lepper is a populist who enjoys strong support in the country's poorer rural areas, the BBC's Adam Easton reports from Warsaw.

In recent days he has demanded increased public spending on social welfare, healthcare and pensions in next year's budget, our correspondent says.

Early elections

Mr Kaczynski said he would try to assemble a new parliamentary majority with breakaway members of Mr Lepper's Self-Defence Party and another small rural-based group, the Polish Peasant's Party.

Early elections, probably to be held in November, would be the only solution if that failed, he said.

But fresh elections are unlikely to solve Poland's political crisis, says our correspondent.

According to surveys, none of the major parties seems capable of winning a majority.

Hope there's going to be new elections and we get rid of Kaczynski.

I don't like the situation in Central Europe: Riots in Hungary, new elections in Poland, political instability in the Czech Republic.

Where it will end up?

KAczynski faced a great friction of unofficial conglomerate of commies, post-commies, died-pseudo-liberals and other loosers all together... We will kick back but this time harder...

It's nothing wrong to have a new elections, look at Italy or Israel they have elections much more often than the term of parliament they've chosen. I wouldn't compare the situation in Poland to the one in Hungary. Also, everyone expected this to happen sooner or later so no drama.

Parts of it was sarcasm... But for most part yes I believe in what I say... What you say is a fault of Kaczynki brothers is a simple effect of an undecisive elections... when you forbid winner to consume his victory you get **** like that. Morover blaiming winner for trying consume his victory is outrageously stupid. So don't be stupid...

I don't. I agree on that the winner should be able to form a government, but some say in this situation (marginal difference) it's always a problem, not only in Poland.

BTW. Kaczynski regained the majority potential, now PiS hopefully will make a deal... and then make law that make sentenced criminals banned from entering parliment... Kara musi być(punishment must be) :)

What a bunch of hypocrites. So two days ago those criminals were cool (they were in the coalition) and now they're bad (because they left). Herrman you really think this is OK?

uh and one more thing:

"Andrzej Lepper udowodnił, że ma za nic prawo i jest politycznym awanturnikiem. Poparcie PiS-u dla tego polityka w jakiejkolwiek sytuacji jest nierealne."

Lech Kaczynski, march 2005.

Who is hypocrite? PiS always was clear about it intentions... Lepper never was cool he was considered somewhat usefull... Now when he is not and new elections are comming later or earlier... Ban for criminals into parliment can be sorted out, I hope PO, will keep its stand on that ;)

You seem not to read what I've written, thus any arguing has no future. You also seem to be the only PiS supporter here. Cheers.

I'm not the one who don't read qoutes he post...
PiS never suported Samoobrona, but was looking for support of Samoobrona.. If you would see that minor difference you would see there is no contradiction in Kaczynski actions and declarations...

and that is not just in central Europe: Asia is unstable, and Europe is fast at switching ruling parties.

btw. What do you guys think about the new election law proposed by PiS? I have a mixed feelings about this... On one hand it could create a bi-polar system with only two really important parties (i.e. PiS and PO) without all those populistic and nationalist weirdos like Samoobrona and LPR, but on the other it would leave no place on the political scene for smaller parties with narrow electorate...

That seems to be a good idea. All that bull**** with "coalitions" is one of the biggest problems in Polish politic.
