An argument between the occupants of two cars in an intersection in Rainier Valley on Thursday ended in gunfire that left one man dead and another seriously injured, police said.
Police were searching for a gray Cadillac that drove off after several shots were fired into a white Honda with two occupants. That car also left the scene, only to crash into a light post at a fast-food restaurant about three blocks away.
Police did not release the victims' identities. The driver died at the scene and his passenger was taken to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Seattle police spokesman Rich Pruitt said.
The victims were described as being in their late teens or early 20s. The driver was shot in the chest and was unresponsive when officers arrived. He was ****ounced dead at the scene. The passenger suffered a gunshot wound in his right side and was in surgery late Thursday.
Shell casings littered the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and 51st Avenue South after the shooting, which was reported about 4 p.m. Traffic was snarled, and onlookers crowded on the sidewalks behind yellow crime-scene tape. Some talked about the shooting on their cellphones — the words "shot" and "dead" could be distinguished in their whispers — while groups of teenagers gossiped loudly near television news cameras.
Neither police nor the dozens of spectators said much about suspects or the gray Cadillac that sped away after the shots were fired. It was described as having tinted windows and being "clean," according to a police report on the shooting.
"We have very few witnesses and we would appreciate anybody coming forward," said Pruitt. He added that the shooting was not believed to be gang related.
Though investigators hadn't talked to the shooting survivor about what happened, Pruitt said investigators believe someone inside the Cadillac fired several shots at the passenger side of the Honda.
The Cadillac then turned onto Rainier Avenue South toward Renton, Pruitt said.
The Honda traveled about three blocks before crashing into a pole in front of a Jack in the Box.
Police found a pit-bull puppy in the rear seat of the Honda. The dog was taken to the shelter by an animal-control officer.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Seattle Police Department homicide unit at 206-684-5550.
