SYDNEY - A new vodka-flavored ice cream launched in Australia provoked an outcry on Saturday from groups worried it would give children a taste for alcohol.

The booze-flavored Illicit Vodka Cranberry Magnum ice creams hit the shelves just months after biscuit-maker Arnott’s new Tia Maria Tim Tams and Kahlua Slices prompted fears that the liquor-laced biscuits would encourage children to drink.

“These products normalize alcohol and suggest to people that they ought to be thinking about alcohol just about every hour of the day,” said Geoff Munro, Community Alcohol Action Network director.

“It introduces children to the taste of alcohol at potentially a very early age and I think that should be avoided,” he told Australian Associated Press.

Streets, which makes the Magnums now on sale in Victoria state as part of its “vice-cream” range, said the ice creams contained only vodka flavoring and no alcohol.

The firm’s marketing general manager David McNeil told the Herald Sun newspaper the ice creams were promoted only to adults. He added that rum and raisin has been a popular ice cream flavor for 30 years.

maine, if you want to lose weight, just give up added-sugar foods. ESPECIALLY ice cream. :|

I highly recommend it if you are serious about losing weight. Do a 'modified atkins' by just cutting out all refined/added sugar and increase the amount of meat you eat until you feel satisfied. And run, damnit, run! I ran 9 miles straight yesterday, and stopped only because i had a massive blister on the ball of my right foot.

Cut sugars, exercise, and eat meat.

I do run, though I've taken a bit of a break since I've got a cold. The sugars are on their way out, anyway (as soon as I finish my Easter candy) and since they serve meat with every meal here on campus, that's not a problem.

stop eating the candy immediately! if you want to have discipline, you need to start somewhere. get a precedent going. when you give something up when there is still some more candy left, that is more meaningfull than eating all the candy and then 'giving it up'.

Are you from the anti-food association? I mean, in almost every food-related thread you're trying to get everyone off the sugar. Geez. Has it ever crossed your mind that a healthy diet or a healthy weight is possible with sugar?

Yeah but it's like you're on a personal crusade against sugar...in every topic that is about food or dieting at some point.

If it were so bad for you, candy and chocolate would not be included in the Ration packs around the world, now, would they.

Granted, you gotta be burning your 2000+ calories a day to justify those rations in the field, (double rations to engineers/ assault pioneers! They earn every morsel, too, BTW! 4000 calories a day, day in. day out.) but I don't see too many recon platoon troopers replacing those Mars bars with tic tacs, eh.

But for in front of the PC, typing away safely, try a glass of water instead, or maybe a nice crisp apple. Leave the economy-sized Kit Kat bar for Halloween okay?

As an Aussie, I can confirm that the Magnum Ice cream flavours ROCK!

I like how the arguement was basically deflated when the use of Rum and Raisin was pointed out to the Wowser/Fun-Police wannabee. Touche! p-)

Indeed....a moderate amount of sugar is OK-- even necessary.

Chocolate is also an aphrodesiac. Not as potent as oysters or alcohol, but it'll get you in the mood if you have enough of it. (why else would guys give girls a lot of it on Valentine's Day? ;) :D )
