Shots fired at Fla. mosque as Ramadan starts
No injuries reported; police to provide extra patrols

Updated: 6:51 p.m. ET Sept. 23, 2006

MELBOURNE, Fla. - A mosque was hit by gunfire as members inside celebrated the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, authorities said Saturday.

No injuries were reported and there were no arrests.

A member of the Islamic Society of Brevard County stepped outside the mosque Friday night to use his cell phone when he heard several gun shots, police said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, took cover behind a wall as several rounds struck the building, police said. He then ran inside and told mosque members, who called police.

Authorities searched the surrounding area for suspects but found none. Police were not releasing many details of the shooting because the investigation was ongoing, spokeswoman Jill Frederiksen said Saturday. Detectives were working to determine a reason for the shooting.

Police will begin extra patrols around the mosque in Melbourne, about 50 miles east-southeast of Orlando.

Ibrahim Hooper, national spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said that while no motive had been determined by police, the shooting fit a pattern of incidents at mosques this year.

A bullet-riddled Quran was left outside a mosque in Chattanooga, Tenn., and an Indiana mosque was vandalized. There were other incidents at mosques in Maine, Arizona and Maryland.

“Worshippers of the mosque would obviously be disturbed if (religion) was the motive for the attack,” Hooper said Saturday.

No motive? uhhhh, ok...
No doubt in my mind it was done by angry people who want revenge against the Muslims. "You mess with us, we mess with you" type of thing. This isn't surprising at all.

This will continue around the world no matter what. Sometimes people don't need a reason; they just hate. But this is definitely caused by people who don't just blame only the extremists...they believe Islam is a violent religion and the people are uncivilized and all terrorists. The same people who call Arabs ragheads.

Florida.. a pretty large amount of attacks down there on jewish sites, I don't really remember details but I believe it was something like 200+ incidents last year.

A quick google found this in recent days:

Wednesday, August 2, 2006

MIAMI BEACH – Four separate acts of anti-Semitic vandalism recently occurred in the Jewish community of South Florida. Two synagogues, Young Israel of Greater Miami and Congregation Shaaray Tefilah, and two stores, Kosher World and Judaic Enterprises, were spray-painted with hate-filled graffiti.

People will do stupid shyt no matter what "weapons" they are allowed to have or possess. If it wasn't the shooting it could of been jumping Muslims in the parking lot or spitting ast them in Wal-Mart. So take the firearm out of this equation and they would of still harm Muslims one way or another.

I have a friend that went to a Catholic school that was, interestingly, right across the street from a Islamic school.
Apparently, right after 9/11, a lot of parents picking up their childen from the Christian school would make sure to jeer and scream obscenities at the Muslim kids coming out from their school.

I am not talking about some Write-Ups/Book of that religion, I couldn't care less about that.

I am talking about how the Religion is "lived" today, and I don't know any other Religion which brings up so many violent religion-motivated people.

So is it the religion, or the people who are violent? Your post suggests that the religion itself is violent, yet in the last part you suggest it's the fault of violent religiously motivated people. For what it's worth a religion does'nt raise people, people raise people. A religion is an intangable creed that somebody lives by. It does'nt show up at your door step uninvited and tell you how to live your life, it's explained and pressed apon you by those that have a part in your up-bringing. When Palistinian children are subject to hatefull anti-jewish television programs it sure as hell is'nt the 'Islamic Faith' that broadcasts these programs. So let me ask you, what makes an apple pie an apple pie? Is it the crust, or the apples on the inside?

Let me also just say that if your perspective on the Muslim world comes from what you see on t.v. your scope of the religion is very narrow.

Miles.

Chauncy, I respect your arguments. I'm not sure if it's the "crust or the apple", but I agree with Macs.

It comes in cycles. At the time of the Crusades, Islamic people were advanced in all areas of society, and the Christians were backwards.

The question is: when the Islamic world, as a whole, calms down, which group will take the mantle of all-around extremism and backwardness?

americanbychoice

I wouldn't blame Islam as the source of the problems... Islam is merely an excuse for the problems, and that the source of these terrorist problems are the socio-economic issues that plague large portions of Dar al-Islam/the Muslim world.

That being said, Islam in general could use a Reformation of its practices IMO... but that's not up to me.

It comes in cycles. At the time of the Crusades, Islamic people were advanced in all areas of society, and the Christians were backwards.I would say that Christians were not necesarily the bad guys during the Crusader period, just as the Muslims are not necessarily the sole source of all that is wrong in this period of Islamofascist behavior.

We can go through the hand-wringing & soul-searching about some so-called "Christian" evil during the Crusades, but if we're the only ones who do the soul-searching & blamestorming towards ourselves, what's the good in it?

We in the West are sometimes very good at blaming "ourselves"... and when I say "ourselves", I mean "portions of our own society that we are not a part of... rather, we have a NIMBY attitude towards self-reform (i.e. it is up to our neighbors to improve so that we can become better)"

/Reformation is easier said than done
