I live in Columbus Ohio and we have the second largest population of somalians in the country. Many of them happen to live right around where I live, so I see them everyday. There is also a very large percentage that go to my college and that’s where I've noticed something very troubling. Many of these women still wear burkas. Now, I know we are all supposed to be culturally diverse and understanding, but I find it offensive when I see it. We have men and woman being killed everyday all over the world so that woman won’t have to wear those tools of oppression and yet they come to my country and still wear them? Would it be acceptable if black people wore shackles around their arms and legs everywhere they went? Would it be acceptable to wear a white hood over my head when I went to class? Of course not, so why is it acceptable for these women to wear burkas? I swear I feel like I'm walking around downtown Kabul sometimes when I'm at class and that’s very troubling.
