That´s interesting, the aircraft piloted by Saint-Exupery when he crashed and died, in the IIWW, was found sunk close to Marseille, France. Sain-Exupery was a pioneer of aviation, he participated in the first postal airline between Europe-SouthAmerica and I think he was the first in flying over the Andes mountains. The INSAS Rifle is a prime example of a weapon designed by committee, and consequently as such it's design has been changed countless times since it's first creation in the early 1990's. Due to multiple delays in it's design the Indian military purchased countless other designs for use by their military, including the AKM (at least 100,000) from Romania. However by late 1997 some 30,000 copies had finally been produced and were beginning to be distributed amongst front line troops in the country and abroad. The weapon is an amalgamation of the FN FAL, AR-15, AKM and H&K G-3 designs, although the weapon has retained the buttstock of the Lee-Enfield Number 1 Mark III. The receiver is made from sheet steel stampings, the bore and chamber are chrome plated to prevent build up of residue from normal day to day firing of the weapon. It was not until 2002 that the carbine variant had finally seen the light of day, the variant had been announced for several years leading up until it's eventual release. Like the bigger rifle version it is available with a fixed or folding stock variant, however the carbine version cannot use rifle grenades.

The weapon is not completely visible from the pic. Maybe it is just an INSAS LMG.
http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/MONITOR/ISSUE1/BR-MON6.html

The other possibility is that it is a H&K MSG-90 but I seriously doubt it since this is used mostly by the Special forces and the IA personnel in the exercise are regular infantry. It might also be a US weapon since from the other pics we see IA and US army personnel exchanging weapons to familiarise themselves with the other's equipment.

Nice riotshields.

Indian police continue to use sub-standard equipment when compared to the IA or the paramilitary forces. Most equipment decommissioned or discarded by the IA/Paramilitary is passed on to the police. The situation is changing with INSAS rifles, FN-FAL's etc being allotted to police in insurgency ****e areas like Kashmir etc. But elsewhere the change is very slow. The 'Lathi'(The long bamboo stick used by the Police personnel in the picture) is the primary riot control weapon used by the police. Others include tear gas and .303's  used in extreme conditions. Primary reason being that use of excessive force in riots, disturbances etc is frowned upon and viewed with distaste and secondly because of the priority being given to the Army /Paramilitary forces as far as modern weapons are concerned.

Added later: Now that I look at the pic more closely, interesting to see Flak jackets/Bullet proof jackets + Shinguards/ankle pads but still using the Lathi
