(CNN) -- As violence spreads further south in Iraq, U.S. allies with troops in the region are facing unexpected challenges.

Britain, Italy, Poland and Spain all have significant deployments in Shia-dominated areas, and the recent unrest is forcing a strategic reassessment.

European analysts are concerned the coalition of the willing could begin to collapse if the United Nations isn't given a stronger role soon.

While U.S. forces in central Iraq face daily battles with Iraqi forces, fighting is also taking place in Diwaniya, where some 1,300 Spanish troops are based.

Further south in Basra -- where mainly British troops operate -- the situation also is deteriorating rapidly.

Britain is the only U.S. ally with more than 10,000 troops in Iraq. Italy, Poland, Ukraine and Spain each have between 1,000 and 3,000 soldiers in the country -- though Spain has pledged to withdraw its troops by the end of June.

The Shiite uprising now materializing was long anticipated by Iraqi analysts. And the major U.S. allies -- stationed in the Shiite-dominated south -- are bearing the brunt.

"I think the British realize that this is probably the most critical week since the end of the war itself, because there now seems to be a real possibility of a Shia-dominated civil war across Iraq," says Michael Clarke, a professor at Kings College in London

"And if that's the case, then the previous security equation simply won't balance and more focus will have to be put in, greater tactics will have to be thought through and the whole political strategy will have to be readdressed -- and we may be facing those kinds of issues by the end of this week."

At the end of next week, British Prime Minister Tony Blair can raise those issues with U.S. President George W. Bush in Washington.

On Tuesday, Blair met in London with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebair and said that despite the new violence there's no need to reassess the security strategy just yet.

"Our response to this should not be to run away and hide...but on the contrary--to hold firm," Blair said.

But with instability rising to dangerous levels across southern Iraq, other U.S. allies like Italy may begin to re-think their role after the coalition hands over sovereignty to Iraqis on June 30.

"Are we changing the entire structure of the command or not? It's not clear -- and I suppose it's going to be part of the reassessment after June 30th -- but I hope even before," says Stefano Silvestri of the International Affairs Institute in Rome

Uh why is the title of this post ¨Europe bears the brunt......¨. That is rediculous in the extreme. The American military is the one doing most of the fighting. Fact is, there is increased attacks in all sectors. European nations need to stop panicking. US losses have been arond 600 and the next highest nation is England with something around 67 last I checked. Relax Europe.....you can handle it. Consider it good experience for your soldiers...

It doesn't say europe because there are also troops from asia and central america. Most of whom btw have nothing to gain from this but better relations with the US. The reason why the US has more KIA is because until now they have been in tough spots, mainly because of greater numbers, better equipment, and more responsibility. But this article is about the shift that will undoubtedly bring more deaths to coalition soldiers.

And also this article is from american media not european media so we're not complaining so you have no reason to be so condescending.

Unless I'm mistaken the topic says "Allies"......nothing to do with Europe at all,it mentions European analysts within the report.........once again an ill informed response!

What can I say about Spain, is that still isn´t named the new government, it´ll be around 19th april, monday. Really, things are evolving exactly in the way predicted by the same people that didn´t want the war a year ago here in Spain. As I think, and as I reading opinion articles of people close to new government, in the case of Spain we will keep our troops in Irak, but new government will push with the few strength it has to influence both in UN and in USA to getting an agreement about Irak. My support to all allied troops in Irak just in this hard moment.

BRAVO OBD clap, clap, clap, clap, clap

Somehow you managed to get it all wrong, quite an achivement.

Let me put it in simple terms-

Once combats stopped, US allies deployed troops in Shiite areas which were deemed to be more pacific, and more inclined to be friendly to Coalition troops. The US took control over the more critical Sunni areas, because it was seemed as being more dangerous. Also, it was seen as the likely place for Saddam to be in it.

The article points out that with the Shiite rebellion, however, the hot spots have increased, and that at least 4 nations have 1,000 troops or more in those areas, hence the title and the article.

anyways, Spanish troops have engaged the enemy and kick them in the @ss doing so, with no casualties. However RIP to all coalition casualties.
